It. is an object of my invention toprovide an improved mining machine. It is a still further object ofmy invention to provide an improved auto matic driving and feeding mechanism'for a 10f F 1g. 1;
cutter of any sort and particularly for a mining machine wherein the feeding of the cutter into the material l'ieing-eut is [automatically controlledby the load on the cutter sothat the speed of feeding is dependent upon and preferably varies in mverse'sense to the load on the cutter. It is a still further object to do this electrically, and b mechanism which requires but a small amount of force for its feed controlling operatitm for controlling a heavy machine, which is arranged in such a compact manner that it can he used in the very narrow space which is usually available in mining operations, which is self oil-ing and in which the driving motor when an electric motor can be either a direct or an alternating current motor, and which will prevent the nu-itor when the latter is an alternating current motor being stalled.

O n tl1 e armature shaft of the motor 11 is a bevel piniOn which meshes with a bevel gear-M having an elongated hub 15 which is keyed to a vertical shaft 16 which .is hung itrom its upper end from an adjustable thrust hearing 17 supported in a removable .cap plate 18 and located in a pocket formed by an upstanding flange 1'9 surrounded by a cap eleyation of such amining l ne 20 which may be removed to fill such pocket with oil or other lubricant' The cap plate 18 also has a downwardly extendingflange 21 which surrounds the hub 15 and between which and said hub 15 is a bushin 22 which is kept filled with oil by an upstanding flange 23 carried by the gear 14 and surrounding the space from the flange 21. The oil from the pocket formed by the flange 19 passes down along the bearing surfaces of the bushing 22 and in order to escape must overflow the flange 23. The shaft 16 is further supported by a bushing 24 in the floor of the gear casing 25, which bushing rises a considerable distance above such floor so as to maintain such gear casing partly full of oil and by a bushing 26 mounted in the upstanding flange 27 from the'bottom of the main frame 10, the bushing 26 being closed at the bottom to enclose the lower end of the shaft 16. The bearin surfaces of the bushing 26 are lubricated y the oil which overflows from the, gear casing 25 through the bushing 24 and also byan overflow pipe 28 which opens into such gear casing about the level of thetop' of the bushing 24 and leads downward'through the floor of such gear' casing to commulnicatewith the bushing 26. For further lubrication the driving pinion 13 and oiling idler '29 may be mountedion the main-frame 10 to meshwith su h pinion and to=-dipintothe oil in the gear casing-"25.9

The cutter chain 36 has the usual cutters 38. Thus the motor 11 drives the cutter chain 36 through 'thepinion 13, gear 14, shaft 16, pinion30, gear 31 and sprocket 35.
A worm 40 is fixed on the shaft 16 be tween the floor of the gear casing 25 and The sun gear 52 is fast on a shaft 47 the gear 14. The lower end of this worm projects loosely over the upper end of the bushing 24. The worm 40 meshes with a worm gear 41 mounted on a horizontal stub or jack shaft 42. From this shaft 42 the feeding mechanism is driven. The shaft 42 carries ooaxially therewith two duplicate pinions 43, which pinions are keyed to and rotate with a member 67 hereinafter described through which member said pinions are adapted to be connected by mechanism also to be later described to the shaft 42 for rotation therewith. The pinions 43 mesh respectively with two duplicate gears 44 mounted on sleeves 45 and 46 respectively, which sleeves are coaxial with and rotatable relative to a horizontal shaft 47, the sleeve 45 fitting directly on a bushing on the shaft 47. The gears 44 are spaced apart but are connected to rotate together by bolts 48 upon each of which bolts are mounted two planet gears 49 and 50 of slightly different size, but rigid with each other so? as to rotate together. The gears 49 are shown as slightly larger than the gears 50. The planet gears 49 mesh with the sun gears 51 and planet gears 50- with the sun gear 52, the sun gear 52 being larger than the sun gear 51 to correspond t to the difference in size of the planet gears '49 and 50. By reason of the duplication of the gears 43 and pinions 44 all tendency to twist in the planet gears 49 and 50 and in'the sun gears 51 and 52 is eliminated. The sun gear 51 forms part of a' sleeve 53 roin one direct-ion'from neutral position, in
which it is free from any locking engagement, teeth 57 on one end thereof engage teeth 58 on the sleeve 46 to lock together the sleeves 46 and 53 and thus cause the "sun and planet mechanism to revolve as a unit, and when slid in the other direction from neutral position, teeth 59 on the other end engage teeth 60 on a portion 102 constituting here a part of easing member 25. It will be observed that when the member 54 "is slid to the right in Fig. 4 fast speed rotation is transmitted to the shaft 47 and -when slid to the left slow speed of rotawhich meshes with an internal gear 91 formed upon the internal periphery of a feed operating member, herein in the form of a drum member 92 rotatable upon a transverse axis disposed forwardly of the controlled by a friction controlled take-up drum 94 so that after the cutter bar has been sumped *intoa mine face the machine may be moved bodily laterally along the "face to undercut *the same "in a Well-known manner.
For the purpose of providing a frictional control for the feed operating mechanism which will be effective at either feeding speed, the fol-lowing construction :is provided. Ithas -*been noted that the pinions 43 are mounted upon *the 'member 67, :being in fact mounted upon a sleeve portion 100 thereof which -is loosely mounted on the shaft 42 and fixedzto-rthemember 67 which constitutes :a clutch casing between which and the shaft :42 is a :multiple disc clutch .73. Manual means may be provided and are herein shown for releasing clutch 73 and for controlling the degree of loading thereof manually. As shown, one or more rollers 103 are carried by a slidable member 104 which is screw threaded and provided with a nut, loo-which cooper-ates with the casing 25 to slide the member 104. The
rollers cooperate with the flange 77 of the disc 74 to shift such disc against the spring 75 to release the clutch 73. Manipulation of the manually controlled nut 105, how- :ever, cannot cause an excessive load on the (lXlVPIlg motor 11 because 'the rollers 78 are always in readiness for operation by the solenoid to release the clutch 73 whenever the load on the motor requires it.
The solenoid 82 is connected in series with the motor 11 across any suitable supply circuit 85 through any suitable switch 86 and controlling device 8 7. The motor 11 is shown in Fig. 5 as a compound wound motor of the commutator type and in Fig. 6
as an induction motor of the squirrel cage type. Because of the series connection of the solenoid 82 the pull of such solenoid varies directly as the load on the motor 11,
which load is in the main that due to the cutting mechanism. If desired, a switch 88 may 'be provided for shont circuiting the solenoid 82.
From what has preceded the mode of operation of this mechanism will be very clearly apparent. the sleeveo is in its midd le'position, no fieeding is obtained as the reaction gear 51'is free to rotate.
Wren the sleeve is thrown to the right to cause intermeshing of theteeth '57 and '58,
quick feeding is prevented from causing overload -on the motor by the action of bhe solenoid 82 on the clutch 73. When the sleeve 54 is thrown-to the left to cause intermeshing cit the teeth '59 and 60 the re- .action gear is positively held stationary sothat when the clutch 73 is set the-shaft 47 is driven to-operate the drum :92 at a slow winding speed'and'i'n the-same direction as rotation occurred in the other operative tightening of the clutch 73 and thus tocontrol slippage of the shaft 42 in the sleeve in accordance with the load so that. the feeding operation always maintains the load on the motorat substantially a constant value. It will be understood that when the switch 88 is closed, the friction clutch 73 may be loaded to any extent within the capacity of the spring 75 by adjustment of the nut so that the mechanism will produce not only two predetermined feeding speeds, namely, a fast and a slow feeding iii) speed, but also a plurality of fractional speeds obtained by allowing more or less slipping of the friction clutch. It will be understood that by properly reeving the flexible feeding member (not shown) which is wound upon the drum member 92 in such a direction as to be drawn in when the motor rotates in a direction to drive the cutter chain 36 counterclockwise in its orbit as viewed from above, it is possible to cause the machine to move in such a manner relative to the face as to sump the bar under the coal and to move the entire machine transversely of a working face to effect the cutting of a kerf. It is possible, moreover, to move the machine on to and off of a truck by properly reeving the flexible feeding member, the fast speed being the more freuently used for moving the machine about t e entry or onto and off of the truck, while the slow speed is primarily the cutting speed. During the various cutting operations the brake controlled member 94 together with the flexible feeding member employed therewith may be used to control the movements of the machine as may be necessary.
