Still another object of my invention isto provide an-improved mining machine of ex- 4 25 ceedingly compact form wherein the feeding drums are disposed within the lateral limits of the machine frame.` These and other objects and advantages of my invention will, however, Vhereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying 'drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,--
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the mining machine, the feeding and controlling mechanism being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional viewk taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 isa transverse horizontal sectional view taken Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 1--4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing the different positions of the machine during the cutting operation in a room or the like.
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view similar to that shown in Fig. 5 with the machine cutting in the opposite direction. l
In this illustrative disclosure, whichis a division of my copendingy application Ser. No. 312,346, filed July21, 1919, it will here substantially on line .3-3 of Serial Noi 312,346. Divided and this application filed December 11, 1924. vSerial N0. 755,259.
in be observed that I have shown a mining machine of the room and pillar type including a frame or casing 1 providedwith a bottom plate or shoe 2 adapted to support the machine and slidable upon the mine bottom or a ytransport truck, not shown, in a well known manner. l As shown this frameis provided with a rigid cutter bar 3 as is usual with machines of the type mentioned and this bar carries a cutter t"hain 4 equipped with cutter bits 5 and rotatable around the bar by means of a cutter chain drivin sprocket 6 located within the frame and herein preferably adjacent the rear end thereof through which the cuttings discharge. As illustrated, the machine frame alsoA carries a motor which maybe of any suitable type, herein a horizontal longitudinally extending reversible electric motor, having an armature 7 and controlled by any. suitable controller mechanisms 8 and 9. The armature 7 of this motor is hereiny operatively connected through improved mechanism, hereinafter described,- to the cutter chain driving sprocket 6 and is also operatively connected, through other improved operative connections likewise hereafter de` scribed, to selectively operative feeding'and controlling members l10 and 11, herein in the form of winding drums, and to a truck driving member 12, herein in the form of a chain sprocket, the construction being such that through flexible feeding means, herein for illustrative purposes shown in the form -of feeding cables 13 and 14, and operatively connected to the. feeding members 10 and 11, respectively, and guided by cooperating guiding members, herein in the form of idler rolls or sheaves 15, 16, and 17, the machine is adapted to be propelled'by its own power relative to the mine bottom or to its transport truck, in a well known manner, while through a suitable chain connection, not shown, operatively connectible between the member 12 and the wheels of the transport truck, the machine is adapted to propel the truck when mounted in transport position thereon. It will herein be observed that the guide roll 15 may be transposed to the opposite side of the machine frame when the machine iscutting from left to right.
It will herein further be observed that the motor armature 7 is provided at its rear end with a bevel pinion 19,hferein meshing Vit will also lmeshvfith an internal gear V31, which` is with a horizontally disposed lower bevel gear 20, which, as shown in Fig. 2, is in turn rotatably mounted in suitable bearings 21 at the upper end of a vertical stud 22 having its lower endthereof extending through suitable adjustable bearings 23 and supported on the shoe 2 at the rear end of the latter. The bevel gear `2O in turn is fixed, herein by a key 24, to a sleeve 25 likewise external to the bearings 21 and coaXially disposed with and rotatable relative to the stud 22 and having a pinion 26 on the lower reduced portion of the sleeve. with a plurality of slightly larger pinions 27, herein three, disposed radially thereabout and rotatably mounted as on removable bearing members 26 carried on a rotatable spider 29 which, in turn, has an upstanding rotatable sleeve 30 disposed coaX- ially with the stud 22 and between the same and the pinion 26 and the gear 26. Herein, be observed that the pinions 27 journaled on the lower end of the stud 22 and preferably integrally united as by screws 32 with the cutter chain driving sprocket 6 likewise journaled on the/stud. Thegear 81 is herein also provided with a depending portion 33 having a fia-nge 34 at is periphery running close to the inner edge of a flange formed on the frame 1, the construction being such that the entry of cuttings or the' like into the gearing is eifectually prevented. Herein, attention is also directed to the -fact that the outer periphery 36 of the gear 31 is adapted to be engaged by frictional controlling means, herein inthe form of a brake band 37, having one end operatively connected to the frame, as at 38, and its other end connected to a threaded controlling member 39 (see Fig. 4) threaded in the bushing 4() extending through a suitable aperture in the side of the frame and controlled by a nut 43 rotatable by a hand wheel 42 on the outside of the frame. As a result of this construction it will be observed that the cutting chain driving sprocket 6 may be rotated or remain idle while the motor` is running, the cutter chain driving sprocket being adapted to be driven at full speed when the member 29 is held stationary. y i
lOperatively connected to the cutter chain driving mechanism is improved cooperating feeding means adapted to drive the feeding and controlling drums 10 and 11. As shown, the sleeve 30 on the spider 29 carries on its upper end a small bevel pinion 45 which, in turn, constantly meshes with corresponding bevel gears 46 and 47. The gears 46 and 47 are herein spaced apart by a spacing and bearing member 48 formed on the uppervend of the stud 22 and are freely rotatable on a shaft 50 disposed transversely of the frame, as shown in Fig. 1. Herein the gear 47 is The pinion 26 meshes i mechanism also. suitably rigidly connected, as by a usual semi-permanent clutch or other connecting means 49 to a rotatable driving member 51 Y' herein carrying thereon one of the elements of a friction clutch 52 and cooperating with an outer clutch casing lmember rupon` which the drum 10 is formed. The member 53 is in turn journaled, as at 54, in a suitable closure member 55 carried at the side of the machine frame. Herein, the gear 47 has an annular chamber 56 therein receiving an adjustable friction controlling member 5.7
adapted to compress or release the elements of the frictionclutch 52 at will and thereby cause the feeding drum 1() to be rotated with the gear when the friction Vis loaded or to enable thegear to rotate independently of the ydrum 10 when the friction is released. Referring back to the gear 46, will be noted that this gear is similarly connected7 f as by a usual semi-permanent clutch or other connecting means 58.*w1th a driver member 59 carrylngone of the elements of `a frictional clutch 60, the other elementof the latter being,`as heretofore, carried by a casing member 61 upon which the drum 11'is formed. The member 61y is journaled, as `at 62, in-a closure member 63, similar to the member 55, carried bythe opposite side of the machine frame. The gear 46 is likewise u' ter chain when the frictions 52 and 6() are y used and the brake band 37 is set, the speed of the feed then obtained, i. e., when the cutter chain is not in` operation, is materially greater than the cutting speed obtainable when the brake band 87 isVu released, i. e., when the cutter chain is in operation.
Operatively connected with t-he feeding mechanism, herein through the friction clutch 60, lis improved truck driving mechanism adapted operatively to connect or disconnect the truck driving member 12. As shown, this member 12 is provided with a sleeve 66 receivable on a corresponding sleeve 67 on a sleeve member 68 which is suitably fixed, as by a key 69, to the clutch casing member 61 and rotatable with the latter. Here it will also be observed that clutch teeth V70 are provided on adjacent surfaces of the members' 12V and 68, and that the member 12 is provided with a suitable mechanism 71, similar to that disclosed in my copending application mentioned above, wheremesma bythe member 12`may be forced" outwardly relative to the-member 68 to disengage the clutch teeth when-desired, for instance during thecutting operation or duringy the ltruck loading or unloading operation. Itis t-hus possible when the machine is on: its transporttruclrto connect the member 12 to the member G8 andconsequently to the casingl upon Which the drum 112is formedin such manner as to drive the member 12 at a fast speed'through the friction mechanism 6(), it of course being understood that during this truck driving operation the brake band 37 is set tight in such manner as to prevent movement of the cutter chain driving sprocket 6.
Cooperating withthe friction mechanism, hereinV above described, is improved'means for controllingthe same whereby 'the facility ofl control is enhanced and the effortV required by the operator is materially reduced. These mea-ns, as shown herein, are of tliepressure fluid type, the annular chalutiers 5G`and 64 in the gear members 47 and 46' being in the form ofcylinders and the movable friction controlling members 57 and being in the form ofpistons movable in said cyl` inders under. the influence of pressure fluid.y herein, pressure liquid such as oil admitted thereto through oppositely locatedports 72 and73 formed in the members 47 and 46 respectively and which communicate with an Aaxial chamber 75 in the' shaft 49. It will also be noted that disposed in this chamber 75 is a. plurality of coaxially andoppositely disposed pistons 76 and 77k providedwvith operating rods 78 and 79 connected through sui table mechanism, heretofore described in my copending application Ser. No. 312,346, by suitable coaXially arrangedhand Wheels 8O and 81. By the provision of such a mechanism it will be observed that it is possible to control the frictions substantially asV above set forth by adjustment` of the hand Wheels SOand 8l. More particularly it will be noted that the tivopistons and 77 may be` simultaneously moved toward one another or away therefrom by adjustment, of the hand Wheel 81 when the hand vvheelSO is heldsta-tionary, and that the rod 7 9 will be adj usted bodily With the pistons in either direction when the hand Wheel 814 is held, stationary andthe hand Wheel SO isrotated. Thus it will be observed that through movement of the hand'ivheelv 80 the rzod'79 may be, adjusted bodily tobringthe desired piston 76, 77 into fullface contact- With the oil and thereafter through` operation of. the hand vWheel 81, thisdesired piston may be adjustedrelative to the. rodin such manner as tosubjectthe oil to the desired pressure necessarytocauseloading of the frictions. Ofy course both pistons may. simultaneously be caused -to exert pressure on the oilrto effect simultaneous clutch loading, it being possible by sepa-rate lorsimultaneous adjustments oflt-hehand Wheels'to produce any-desired eife'ct. It will also'fbe noted that thefric'-` tions 52 and 60 are provided with suitable eral limits of t-hc machine frame in such man-ner as to reduce the Width of the latter.
In the operation ofmy improved mining machine, cutting from 'right to lefti as shown in Fig. 5, it will hereiny be observed that the free endl of the cable 13 is secured' at the face of the coal by means ofa suitable jack A. The clutch 52 controlling the drum 10 is then thrown in. Winding in the cable'13 at the desired speed and the cutter bar` 3 is sumped from the full line position, in under the face of the coal. The receding or controlling'cable 14 is then connected adjacent the right handrib by means of a usual jack lor take-upmechanism B and the feed cable 18" is then connected to the jacltrAv which has been moved to the left hand rib. The
machine* mayjthen be straightenedup in anyofFig. 5, by means ofthe take up B, by
the use of a ack, or by bringing thev machine to the desired angle by the drum 11 an'dlthen completing thefcut. The take-up B maybe utilized for angling the machine during the transverse cut, if desired. The machine is then Withdrawn from the face by means of the drum 10, in the usual manner. 'During the cutting operation from left to right, as shownin Fig; 6, the driving motor and the relative position of the cutter bits is reversed and the cable 14 connected to the drum 11, Which during this operation is the feeding drum, is connected at the 'taf-e to the usual jackv A. After the s-umpingcut the cable 13 connected to the' drum 10 is connected at' the left hand rib by means of a usual jack or'take-up mechanism B While the jack A ismovedto the rightv hand rib. The machine isy then moved: transversely across the face and withdrawn from the coal in a manner substantially similar to that described above during the right to left` clutch 52 controlling the drum 10 and applying the clutch 60, andreversing the motor 7, thus causing the controlling drum 1l to act as a take-up member to wind in the cable 14 and thereby pull the rear end of the machine toward the right hand rib. If it is desired to angle the machine when cutting from left to right, as shown in Fig. 6, the brake band 37 may be applied, thus preventing rotation of the sprocket 6the clutch G() released and the clutch 52 applied7 the motor 7 reversed, and the take-up drum 10 may then wind in the cable 13, pulling the end of the machine toward the left hand rib.
` As a result of my improved construction a mining machine is provided having improved cutting, feeding means, and controlling mechanism whereby the machine may be operated in opposite directions with greater facility. It will further be noted that im roved truck driving mechanism is provi ed which cooperates directly with the feeding mechanism. It will further be noted that a feeding and cutting mechanism of exceedingly simple and compact character Y is provided whereby the facility of operation of the cutting and feeding mechanism is substantially increased and wherein the lateral limits of the machineare substantially decreased. These and other objects and advantages of my improved mining machine will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art. i
