- Application filed Apr-1129, 1924. SerialiNo: 709,843",

lie it known that I, Join: E.. Iiiniusrr, citizen of the United States. residing at Richmond, in the county of lenrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements, in Reenforced Metal Supporting, Sticks; and I do hereby declare the follnwing to be a: full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same;
This invention relates to an improvement in reenforced metal; supporting stick to be used for supporting tobacco leaves after picking. e
An object of my invention is to provide a rcenforced metal supporting stick for use in supporting leaves of tobacco while the same are drying out or the reverse, and to constructing the said stick so that it will be quite rigid, thereby permitting the stick to be used in any desired length. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide a reenforccd metal supporting stick for supporting tobacco leaves or other things suspended, which will be highly eflicient and durable.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of my application,
Figure l is a plan view of my improved reenforced metal supporting stick,
Figure 2 is a side elevationof the supporting stick,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line of Figure l, and
Figure d is a perspective view showing the stick in use with several leaves of tobacco supported thereon.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
My improved reenforced metal support-- iug stick is preferably stamped from a strip of sheet metal, and is formed substantially U-shaped in cross section and is corrugated longitudinally as well as transversely, and is further provided at its central portion with a longitudinally extending reenforced ridge 1.
In stan'ip-ing out the stick, I provide a plurality of laterally extending arms 2,
which are substantially Ushaped. in cross section, and which are alternately disposed on the oppositesides: of said stick throughout its entire lengthwforr' additionalreens forcement of the ridge 1.. The arms 2 are separated by the not-ches 3wl'1icl'lr extend. inwardily to within a short distanceof the central ridge 1 and have their adjoining edges provided with the serrations or teeth t. The sticks being corrugated longitudi enforces the same.
The groove portion 5' of the several: arms 2 extendsinto a point closer to; the-longitudinally extending ridge 1 than the inner ends of the several notches 3, and therefore serves to additionally reenforce the several arms, by reason of the fact that there is a substantial strip or piece of metal 6 between the inner ends of the notches 3 and the adjacent edge of the ridge 1.
In operation, the stems of the tobacco are inserted in the notches 3 so that the teeth l or the edges of the notches 3 impinge or bite into the said stems to support the suspended leaves or other suspended things in the desired manner. By reason of the lateral corrugated formation and the relative location of the notches 3 therein, the downward pull of the suspended article in creases the impinge or bite of the edges or teeth l of the notches The sticks or strips may be positioned on any suitable support at any time, as illustrated in Figure -l of the drawings, but the leaves, may be suspended either separately or collectively as desired. I have illustrated the ends of the sticks as provided with perforations through which suitable fastening means may be placed and secured in the support 8.
It is intended that these strips are to be punched or pressed from strips of sheet metal, which Will preferably be galvanized, thereby rendering the same impervious to rust or weather. a
It will be understood thatI do not intend to limit myself to the specific formation of the teeth employed, but reserve the right to any type of teeth, the broad idea of my invention being the provision of the central reenforced ridge and the oppositely disposed alternate laterally extending U-shaped reenforced arms between which are positioned the toothed notches, and the provision of the portion of metal between the inner ends of nally as well as transversely tl'ioroughly re the notches and the central ridge whereby said arms will be materially and additionally reenforced.
Many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
1. A reenforced metal supporting stick, comprising an integral piece of metal substantially U-shaped in cross section, the same being corrugated longitudinally and transversely, a central longitudinal ridge pressed therein, a plurality of alternately disposed lateral extending arms at the opposite sides of said central ridge and inwardly extending notches provided with serrated edges formed between adjacent arms.
2. A reenforced metal supporting stick provided with acentrally' disposed longitudinally extending reenforcing ridge, U- shaped arms alternately disposed on the opposite sides of said ridge, inwardly extending notches formed between the adjacent edges of said arms, teeth formed on the edges of said notches, and the groove portions of said arms extending to a point nearer to said central ridge than the inner ends of said notches.
3. A reenli'orced metal supporting stick for supporting leaves of tobacco, or other things, provided with a centrally disposed longitudinally extending reenforced ridge, a plurality of laterally extending alternate-- 1y disposed U-shaped reenforced arms formed on the opposite sides of said ridge, inwardly extending notches formed between said arms, teeth formed on the adjacent edges of said notches, the groove portions of said arms extending inwardly to a point nearer said ridge than the inner walls of said grooves for materially reenforcing said arms, and means for attaching said stick to a suitable support.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOH E. PARRISI-I.
