Patented Mar. 3l, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,532,051' PATENT OFFICE'.
JOHN DRAPEAU, or mvn'a Rouen, MrcneAN.
SALIVA-ARRESTING MEANS vFOR lTOBACCO PIPES.
Application filed October 6, 192,4. Serial No. 742,023.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN DRAPEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Rouge, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saliva-,arresting Means for Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of simple, inexpensive and efficient means for use in tobacco pipes with a view to preventing the passage of saliva from and to the mouth of the smoker, i. e., from mouth Vto stem portion adjacent to the bowl and vice versa.
'Io the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:-
Figure 1 is a general sectional View of a tobacco pipe including the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail section showing the rear section of the pipe stem.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section of the mouth piece.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section of my novel saliva arrester.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The stem of the tobacco pipe shown is made in sections, and the rear section 1 is constructed in accordance with my invention. It is to be understood, however, that the stem may be formed in one piece without affecting my invention, and therefore the section 1 will be hereinafter referred to as the pipe stem. Said stem is provided with the usual bore 2 for the passage of smoke, and the said bore 2 is merged at its rear end into an enlarged bore 3, which, in turn, is merged into a countersink 4, Figures 1 and 3. The said countersink t is designed to receive in flush manner the circumferential rib 5 on the body 6 of my improvement, which body is removably arranged in the stem E In the body 6 is a bore 7 for the passage of smoke and an enlarged rear bore 8. Itis within the purview of my invention to form the body 6 of any appropriate material, though I prefer to make the said body of aluminum. Removably arranged in the enlarged bore 8 of the body 6 is a ytrap member 9 which has an abutment 1() to bea-r against the end of the body 6 and also has a beveled end 11. In the trap member 9 is a bore 12 which terminates at its rear end in an angular-ly disposed portion 13 which eX- tends to one side of the member 9 as illustrated. Both the rear portion of the body 6 and the trap member 9 are arranged in a mouth piece 14, shaped interiorly and exteriorly as illustrated and having a large bore 15 and a minute off-center passage 16 extending rearwardly from the bore 15.
In use the elements are relatively alranged as shown in Figure 1, andv hence it will be noted that the improvement will prevent saliva from flowing freely down the stem and at the same time will minimize any burning of the tongue due to hot smoke, the smoke being drawn indirectely through the improvement including the arrester and the mouth piece 14.
The improvement has been reduced to actual practice, and such practice has demonstrated that notwithstanding the capacity of the arrester to prevent the passage of'saliva to the mouth no excessive moisture has collected in the course of a. week of almost constant use in the stem and in the bottom of the pipe bowl. v
In curved stems the bevel 11 of the arrester may be and preferably is made greater than in a straight stem such as illustrated. i
It will be manifest from the foregoing that when necessity demands the body 6 and the trap member 9 may be removed from the pipe stem and from themouth piece 14, and the member 9 can be removed from the body 6 to facilitate thorough cleaning of the arrester.
Like the body 6, the trap member 9 is preferably, though not necessarily, formed of aluminum.
I have specifically described the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the construction illustrated, my invention being defined by myv appended claim within the scope of which changes may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:-
In a smoking device, the combination of a stem having a smoke passage and also having an enlarged bore at its rear end in communieation with a oountersink in said end, a mouth piece having` a bore and also having an off-center small passage extending rearwardly from Said bore to the rear end of the mouth piece, a body arranged in the stem and the mouth piece and having a bore and an enlargement at the rear end thereof and also having` a eii'eumfeietal rib seated in said eountersink and a trap member a1'- having a bore with an angularly disposed.
rear portion and also having a rear beveled end.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature.
JOHN DRAPEAU.
