ANTIEIONY r. xnnmornneonm, KANSAS.
. a 1 -on. BURNER.
. To all whom it. may, concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY P. KERN, a
citizen of theUnited'State-s, residing at Ar gonia, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improveme-nts in Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification. I
This invent on relates to hydrocarbon burners, for use in various'arts and for many of a novel burner for using oil as a fuel, the
purposes'and has for its object the provision ing pipe is out of the directline of the flame which issues from anadjustable Orifice, a
e which spreader being. also the flame impinges.
An additional object is the provision of a burner of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eflicient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the provided against which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device and Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown my device as comprising a main upper pipe 10 carrying at one end, a
reducing nipple 11 connected with the'fuel.
line12, andhaving its other end carrying an elbow 13 which is in turn connected with a. second elbow 145 screwed onto one end of a preheating pipe '15 which is located below the pipe 10. The opposite end of this pipe 15 carries an elbow 16 screwed onto a second elbow 17 connected with a pipe 18 which i i has its other end closed by a cap 19.
Threaded through the pipe 18 is a threaded rod or stem'20 which has a pointed upper end 21 engaging through a hole22'in the uppermost point of the ipe 18. This hole, 22 constitutes'the jet and t y turning the stem 2O thesize of the holeis regulated forvary-' ing the feed of fuel. I The lower. end of this stem carries a beveled gear 23 witlrwhich accompanying drawings, in,
" Application filed March 24, 1923. Serial No. 627,460.:
meshes a bevel 24 carried by one end of a shaft 25 which has a flexible connection 26 with an operating handle 27. By turning the handle 27 the stem 20 is adjusted to regulate the size of the jet.
Mounted below, the pipe 18 is a priming pan 28 which may contain'any desired absorbent material, or not, and which is designed'to be filled with oil and lighted for the purpose of initially heating the pipe 18.
Located below the pipe 10 is a flame spreader which consists of a plate 29 carried by two bolts 30 which are disposed at opposite sides of the pipe 10 and which pass through a clamp 31 engaging the pipe. It should be stated that the pipe 15 is ofiset with respect to the pipes 10 and 18 so as to be out of the direct line of the flame.
In the operation of the device the stem 20 is initially turned to open the hole 22 a trifle so that oil may drip down and fill the priming pan 28. The oil within this pan is then ignited and when it burns it will heat the pipe 18 and start vaporization of the fuel therein. When the pipe 18 becomes good and hot the valve 20 is again opened and the vapors issuing from the hole 22 are ignited. The flame shooting upwardly impinges against the spreader plate 29 and while the pipe 15 isoffset so as to be out of the direct line of the flame, it is quite obvious that it will nevertheless become thoroughly heated so that the oil in the whole system will be readily vaporized and made highly combustible.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive oil burner which will utilize crude oil or distillate to equal advantage and which will be economical in fuel consumption while producing a very intense and effective heat.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction and arrangement of parts as llO ed Withitheend thereof, a third pipe disposed belmvancl connected With'the end of said preheating pipe and having its free end valveloca-ted below said last-namedgpipe, a clamping member engaging the-first named ipe andearrying a pa1r of depending bolts straddling the pipe, and a spreader plate carried by said bolts and located in line'with :nndabove the hole.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ANTHONY P. KERN.
