To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAX J LInBnNsTnIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

My presentinvention is shown as applied to two types of garters, but it will'be understood that the invention is susceptible of use in various other types, and the invention consists in the features of novelty here inafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings'and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this speoiiication.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated on Sheet 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that the garter comprises a pad portion composed of two sheets A and B of rubberized or waterproofed fabric, preferably with layers 0 of stiffening material arranged between said sheets. Each of the sheets of waterproofed fabric is formed of two plies D and E of textile material with a film or layer F of rubber or equivalent waterproof material uniting said plies together. The outer ply D of textile material may be of better quality (such for example as satin) than the inner ply E, and the film of rubber, which may be in the nature of a rubber cement, will constitute a very thin layer suflicient to securely unite the plies of textile material D and E. This film of rubber will serve not only to unite the plies of textile material together, but

will also so permeate the threads of the textile material that the raw edges of the plies will be prevented from raveling or fraying. The sheets A and B that comprise respec tively the front and back of the garter pad are preferably formed integral, being con nected at one point as at as. The manner of of making the sheets of rubberized or water proofed fabric composed of two plies of textile material with an interposed film or layer of rubber uniting the plies together, is well understood in the art. When the sheets are thus made, they will be cut into strips corresponding in outline to the garter pad, this cutting of the sheets to proper form and size being effected preferably by means of suitable dies.

In order to givesufiicient body to the garter pad, I prefer to interpose between the sheets A and B one or more layers of stiffening material C, these layers being cut of a size somewhat smaller than the dimensions of the garter pad and being preferably formed from an integral piece. I

The finished pad is shown as of general oval outline, its minor axis being approxi mately equal to the width of the body portion or leg-encircling band G of the garter, to one end of which the pad is securely united by rows of stitchingus and t. In forming the garter, a pad blank comprising inner and outer sheets D and E united together as at a will have a correspondingly shaped piece of interlining or stiffening material C of smaller dimensions placed thereon and the sheets will then be folded along their connecting portions (1!, and will be placed over one end of the body portion or leg-encircling band G of the garter and will be securely united thereto by the rows of stitches 8 aud t. By forming the stiffening material or inter-lining C of smaller dimensions than the sheets D and E, the outer row of stitching s will prevent any projection of the raw edge of the interlining beyond the edge of the pad.

Upon the outer face of the garter pad is mounted a stud plate R that is connected to the pad by suitable stitching '1", this stud plate R carrying a stud 1" adapted to be engaged by a stud loop 9 of familiar construction, that is secured to the free end of the body portion or band G of the garter. This free end portion of the garter is shown as provided with an adjusting bar or loop whereby the size of the garter may be varied in manner well understood. By forming the inner and outer sheets of the pad from an integral strip of material, the connecting portion a of the sheets serves to give a finished edge to the garter end.

A garter embodying my invention possesses a number of advantages both in economy of manufacture and in use. Thus, by forming the garter pad from sheets of rubberized or, waterproofed fabric, the necessity of, folding the inner edges of the sheets of the garter pad is avoided, since the rubber film interposed between the plies permits the pad to be made with raw edges which will not fray or ravel. Again the lilm or films of waterproofed material prevent the perspiration from reaching the outer surface of the pad and discoloring the same, and also protect the metal parts from the action of perspiration. By forming the pad of sheets of rubberized fabric, the pad is provided at its bottom with a sock-engag-- ing-button and loop of familiar construc-' tion. In this embodiment of the invention, G designates the body portion 'or leg-sencircling band of the garter and'A and B denote the outer and inner sheets that comprise the pad, layers C of stiffeningmaterial or interlining being interposed between the sheets A and B.
