To all (whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORDECAI BAssAN, a native of Palestine, having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and being a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of IZings, city and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to utilize the same.
My improvements relate to mechanical toys in which a bellows is used for the purpose of sound production through the medium ofan air vibrating device in a, manner well known in the art the novelty in the present case consisting primarily in utilizing the movable member of the bellows tolefi'ect the revolution of one or more figures or objects around an axis of rotation, substantially in the mannervdescribed.
To this end the invention consists in the specific construction, combination," and arrangement of parts claimed, distinctive features being the mechanism employed for changing the reciprocatory motion of the movable member of the bellows into rotary motion for effecting the travel of the figure or figures around a prescribed circuit, and for imparting a jumping efi'ect thereto enroute, all as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings 1 exemplify a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention in a sound producing rotativetoy of the character designated although I do not restrict myself to the identical form of parts shown, since modifications in minor details of configuration and construction, and equivalent mechanical expedients, may be resorted to with like results, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.

A, is the rigidbaseplate, formed of any desired material and configuration, to the under side of which is afiixed the stationary member Z), of the bellows B, the movable member 7), of which is pivotally attached, as at 6 to the base A, and to said stationary member i), as indicated more particularly in Fig. 2, of the drawings. In either member ofthe bellows B, a reed 7", or equivalent sound producing device is mounted, preferably one emitting a sound appropriate to a figure movably mounted on the upper side of the base plate A.
S, is a central spindleimounted in and extending through the base plate .A. On the lowerportion of this spindle is, rigidly secured a cog wheel s,,of suitable diameter, which meshes with a crankpinion 29, also mounted on the base A, Apitman pflconnects this crank pinion p, with a bell-crank lever 0, also fulcrumedon the base plate A, and articularly connected in turn, by means of the-thrust rod 0', with the movable member b, of the bellows B. This combination and arrangement of actuating mechanism will be seen and understood by reference more particularly to Fig. 2 of the drawings.
By the use of the crank pinion p, in connection with the larger gear 8, I am enabled to impart a relatively slow, continuous motion to the spindle S, by the reciprocation of the movable member 2;, of the bellows B.
One or more radial arms 3", are pivotally mounted on the upper-portionof the spindle S, in a manner shown more particularly in Fig. 4, of the drawings, each arm 3*, being formed with a stop shoulder s, which, by contacting with the spindle S, as shown in said Fig. l, limits the downward motion of said arm 8*.
A figure f, or representation thereof, is mounted on the outer extremity of the radial arm 8", or each, ofthem if a plurality of such arms are provided; and duringthe operation of the toy the figure, (or figures, as the case may be) will obviously traverse a circular path concentric with the spindle S,
To render the toy more attractive and amusing in use, one or more obstacles or hurdles h, may be positioned in the path of the figure 7", and between each obstacle thus positioned and the spindle S, a stationary cam cl, may be interposed in the path of the radial arm or arms 8 so as to tilt the latter upward as it passes thereover, and thereby cause the figure to rise and clear the hurdle or other obstacle it.
By this means my device is rendered capable of interesting effects. Thus, a horse or other hurdle race may be portrayed; or one animal chasing another, as for instance,
a a dog chasing a cat, in which case the sounding device r, actuated by the bellows B, may be made to simulate the bark of a dog, and so on. In fact my new toy mechanism is susceptible of many variations in detail and effect.
A compressive spring 75, may be interposed between the movable member b, of the bellows B, and the stationary member 6, thereof to insure a prompt expansion of the bellows after compression by the fingers of the user.
It is to be understood that the heads or other parts of the figures may be articularly or otherwise connected to the bodies thereof so as to vibrate during the operation of the device, if so desired.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A mechanical toy of the character designated, comprising a base plate, a bellows positioned to the under side thereof, a sound producing device connected with said bellows a spindle mounted on and extending through said base plate, and rotated by intermediate drive mechanism by motion derived from the movable member of the bellows, a. radial arm on the upper portion of the spindle, and a figure mounted on said arm, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. A mechanical toy of the character designated, comprising a base plate, a bellows positioned to the under side thereof, a sound producing device actuated by said bellows, a spindle mounted on and extending through said base plate and rotated by intermediate drive mechanism by motion derived from the movable member of the bellows, a radial arm pivotally connected to the upper portion of said spindle, a stationary cam on the upper side of said base plate interposed in the path of said radial arm, and a figure mounted on said arm, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. A mechanical toy of the character designated, comprising a base plate, a hel lows positioned to the under side thereof,
a sound producing device actuated by said bellows, a spindle mounted on and extending through said base plate, and rotatable by intermediate drive mechanism by motion derived from the movable member of the bellows, a plurality of radial arms attached to the upper portion of said spindle, and figures mounted on said radial arms, substantially-in the manner and for the pur pose described.

A mechanical toy of the character designated, comprising a base plate, a bellows positioned on the under side thereof, a sound-producing device actuated by said bellows, a spindle mounted on and extending through said base plate and rotated by intermediate drive mechanism by motion derived from the movable member of the bellows, a plurality of radial arms pivotally connected with the upper portion of said spindle, stationary cams on the upper side of said base plate interposed in the path of said radial arms, and figures mounted on said radial arms, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
5. A mechanical toy of the character des ignated, comprising a base plate, a bellows positioned on the under side thereof, a sound producing device actuated by said bellows, a spindle mounted on and extending through said base plate, a gear wheel secured to the lower end of said spindle, a crank pinion mounted on the under side of said base plate and meshing with the gear wheel on the spindle, a pitman connecting said crank pinion with a bell crank, said bell crank fulcrumed on the under side of said base plate, a thrust rod pivotally connecting said bell crank with the movable member of said bellows, a radial arm on the upper portion of said spindle, and a figure mounted on said arm, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
6. A mechanical toy of the character des ignated, comprising a base plate, a bellows positioned to the under side thereof, a sound producing device actuated by said bellows, a spindle mounted on and extending through said base plate and rotated by intermediate drive mechanism by motion derived from the movable member of the bellows, a radial arm pivotally connected to the upper portion of said spindle, a figure mounted on the outer end of said radial arm, an obstacle on the upper side of said base plate interposed in the path of said figure, and a stationary cam on the upper side of said base plate interposed in the path of said radial arm, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
7, A mechanical toy embodying a base plate, a bellows positioned on one side there? of, gear mechanism connected with and actuated by the movable member of said 1 bellows radial arms operatively connected with the spindle of a member of the gear mechanism, figures carried by said arms, cams on said base plate in the path of said arms, and hurdles on the base plate in the path of the said arms, the said cams being 15 disposed between said hurdles and spindle.
