BERNARD P. JOHNSON, O'F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
TOY.
Application filed August 31, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, BERNARD P.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton. and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Toy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dancing doll which is designed to be operated by some mechanical contrivance such as the table of a phonograph.
An object of my invention is to produce a doll in which the movements of the human figure are accurately reproduced in a novel 5 manner by "ery simple mechanism and which may be produced cheaply.
This and other objects of my invention are attained in the construction described in the following specification and illustrated in 20 the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a doll embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, but upon a materially reduced scale.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view of a detail of my invention.
In the construction of my improved toy, I provide frame members 4 and 5 the latter extending vertically to support the doll and the former extending horizontally for suitable mounting at some point beyond the phonograph turn table 6. Upon the upper end of support 5 I attach the torso 7 of the body of the doll. This torso carries the head 8. At the upper end of the torso the shoulder and breast portion 9 is mounted for vertical reciprocation by means of a pin 10 in a slot 11 in the torso. The hip portion 12 is attached to the torso by means of a pin 13 which is adapted for reciprocation vertically iii a slot 14 of the torso. In order to communicate motion to the breast portion from the hip portion I attach pivotally the arm section 15 as shown, the other arm 16 being positioned in characteristic dancing posture. The lower portion of the hips is provided with pivots 1'? and 18 to which the thigh sections 19 and 20 of the legs are attached, the feet 21 and 22 being supported by pins 23 and 24: to

permit the hips to rock Serial No. 660,349.
sidewise as well as upwardly and downwardly.
Back of the figure I mount a wheel 25 with the surface of pivoted at a point 2 which is designed for frictional engagement the turntable 6 and is 6 on support On the wheel a pulley 27 is mounted for driving a belt 28 which 29 pivoted at a poi A crank passes over an upper pulley nt 30 on the support 5.
pin 31 attaches the hip portion 12 to the pulley so that when rotated a circular motion will be imparted to the lower portion of the hips. cam 82 is attached. pendulum fashion,
Upon pulley 29 a square This cam operates, in
the depending end 33 of a support member 34 which carries pin 10 to which the breast hooked projection 3 resting at its outer of support 5. Thu
the end vention is the adju A sidewise support 34 by end upon a plate 36 s when cam 32 rotates,
is attached. 5 retains 33 gives support 34 a vertical reciprocatory movement.
A feature of my iiistable pivot member 37 by means of which the drive wheel 25 is held in position relatively to the center pin 38 of the turntable so that the wheel may be placed at the adjus to give it the desire In the operation place the device in scribed above and t ted distances therefrom d speed of rotation.
of my improved toy I the position I have dehen start the turntable.
Rotation of wheel 25 will create a side wise hip movment which to simultaneously downward movement.
also has imparted therea slight upward and This is accompanied by a slight rocking of the breast portion which is also given a more or less rapid vertical vibratory movement.
combination. of mov like and amusing.
The resultant einents is decidedly life- Having thus described my invention what I claim is l. A dancing do ll comprising a figureimpart to the breast vertical movement 0 that of the hips.
portion an independent f greater frequency than 2. A dancing doll comprising a figure having relatively movable breast and hip portions, a crank connected to the hip portion and adapted to give said portion a substantially rotary movement, and a cam cooperating with the crank adapted to impart a verticalmovement, said portions being connected to impart a rocking movement to the breast simultaneously with the vertical movement thereof.
In Witness whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses:
BERNARD P. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
JOSEPH A. SULLIVAN, WILLIAM J. SCHULTZ.
