SERVICE TROUSERS.

order to obtain'gthe proper tit. at the calf of the leg and-it is usually customary to have'the set of the trousers at the calf en gaging .portionfadjustable which can ordinarily be providedfor by the lacing or the positioning of the button.

The objectof my present invention is to devise a novel construction of knickerbockers wherein the. ont calf engaging portion will be a continuation of the leg portion of the trousers and the rear calf engaging portion will be formed of elastic material Such as, for example, a knitted fabric, or one which will have the desired amount of stretch or elasticity, so that a snug fit will be formed at the calf o f the leg.

'Another object is to reduce the amount of material employed, the elastic material being cheaper than the cloth, and of Such dimensions that the seam which formsvthe means for uniting the elastic material with the cloth of which the trousers are made will form a continuation of the side `seams of the trousers or knickerbockers.

With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter more fully appear, my invention comprehends a novel construction of knickerboclters wherein substantially one-half of the calf engaging portion is of elastic material. such as a knittedor woven fabric, so that when the kniclterboclers are drawn into proper position, the proper fit and set will be provided at the` calf engagingportions of the knickerboelers and the necessity of lacing, buckling or buttoning thel parts together at such point is entirely1 obviated. v

lt further comprehends other novel features of construction and advantage all as will b e hereinafter fully set forth and described.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I'have shown in the accompanying drawing a typical embodiment thereof which is at present preferred by me, since this embodiment will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. lt is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalitics of which my invention consists canbe variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalifies as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings, 1 4designates a pair 4of kniekerbockers, embodying my4 in vention. These knickerboclrers are adapted for use by men, women and boys and may be constructed of any desired material and in any desired manner according to the use to which they are to be put, the only change in'construction being at the calf engaging portion of the legs.

At this point, the front face of the leg of the trousersvis extended in the usual manner, as at 2, while the rear portion of the calf engaging portion is formed from elastie material 3, which in practice is preferably knitted or woven cloth, the shape of the blank being clearly shown in Figure 1. It will be seen that the elastic portion 3 consists of a strip of material substantially one-half of the calf engaging portion for the sake of economy of manufacture. f

This elastic strip 3 at its upper end has the. diverging top edge 4 which diverges downwardly and outwardly. The sides edges are secured to the portion 2 by means llllh of a line of stitching 5 torming the side 100 seams. The upper edge at 4 is Stitched to the rear portion 6 of the cloth of which the trouser legs are made.

It will vbe apparent that in accordance with my present invention. when the knickerboclters are drawn on to the wearer. the calf engaging portions will assume their proper position around the calf oi'- the wearer so that a neat and snug tit is provided and the fnlhiess of the lmickerboclrers at the knee im can be folded over in the usual manner so that the proper set and t of the garment will be obtained. I am also enabled to provide an economy in manufacture 'since the elastic material is cheaper than the cloth of Wlch'tlie knickerbockers are made and the `cost inlabor is less than is usually present inthe manufacture of knickerbockers, since the cost ofthe buttons and of making the buttonh'oles is eliminated or the vcost of the eyelets, in case a lacing is employed. The garment is quickly adjusted by simply drawingit into position and can also be removed in `a minimum `amount of time. The front of the' knickerbockers will have the same appearance --atf the calf .engaging portion as at the leg and hip engaging portion of the trousers, as it 1s made of the saine material and the elastic portion at the rear is* substantially covered by the stockings which are rolled over it andby the fold of the legvportion of the knickerbockers.

Having thus described my inventiom' -What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f

Service trousers havingvthe front leg portions formed of fabric extended to form the front half of the calf engaging portions, the rear leg portions of lthe trousers being formed of fabric terminating in the rea'rof the front calf engaging portions ofthe leg fabric, the rear calf engaging portions being of knitted fabric connected at their upper marginal portions to the rear leg portions and being connected with the side marginal portions of the front calf engaging portionslby the same lines of stitching as those -Whichunite the frontand rear leg portions. y
