PAJAMS .Filed oci. 51, 1940 Hunk/13S Patented Apr. 14, 1942 l PAJAMAS Max Wilker, Bridgeport, and Samuel Willxer and Herman .Wilken South Norwalk, Conn.
Application October 31, 1940, Serial No. 363,762
2 Claims. rlhis invention relates to apparel and more particularly to bifurcated garments such as` pajamas,` shorts, underwear, and similar garments worn by men, women,` and children.
At the present time such garments are made with `seams through the crotch and at the back and front to meeting edges of the garment sections together. This has been found expensive whenmanufacturing the garments and also uncomfortable when the `garment is worn and in addition the crotch seam has a tendency to tear e when subjected to strains.
Therefore, one object of the invention is to provide a garment wherein the crotch and the center portion of the seat are formedby portions `of a section extending from the frontof the `garment through the crotch and upwardly at theback, thus eliminating acrotch seam and in addition providing a rear insert which permits added fullness to be provided at the back of the garment. n e
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment wherein the seat insert and the crotch leg portions of the front section when the pattern for the front section is cut, the rear portion of the garment consisting of two sections sewed `which the front section of the garment is made. Fig. 6' is a View of the blanks `or patterns for the back sections.
' Fig. '7 Tis `a perspectiveview of a person wearing a garment of theimproved construction.
The improved garment has been illustrated as 4"pajamas trousers but it i`s` to be understood that `the invention may be incorporated in underwear, shorts, and other bifurcated garments.
The "garment has a body I `formedV with leg extensions 2 and consists of a front section 3 and rear sections 4 cutin4 accordance with the patterns or blanks shown in 4Figures 5 and 6. The" front section il` is of Ysubstantially oblong outline and midway the width of `its upper end is formed witha ily 5 oi conventional formation.
e portion are formed integral with the front sec-v y tion by a tongue or strip extending between the The blank or pattern for the front section is also cut midway Athe lwidth of its lower end to provide a`tonguefor strip 6 Vwhich extends longitudinally of the blank between fleg `forming portions 'I thereof, and attention is called to the fact `that the blank is so cut vthat the strip is tapered or gradually reducedin width toward its upper end and the inner side'edges 8` of the leg extensions or leg forming portions 'I converge upwardly along opposite side edges of the tapered tongue. The
front section is, of such width that when the i frontand rear sections `are sewed to each other along their edges to side `edges of the front sec-/ tion and the upturned middle stripof the front section. It will thus be seen 4that the number of seams necessary will be reduced to a minimum and that these seams will be so located that they may be easily madewith a sewing machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment so formed that an appreciable saving of material will be effected as well as a saving of time and labor when making the garment,` the garment being also very strong and comfortable to wear. l
With these and numerous other objects in view, our invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of side portions of the front section extend rearwardly beyond opposite sides thereofA an appreciable extent `ascl`early shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The two rear sections 4` correspond in length to the lengthA of the front section 3 and While their outer side edges 9 are straight cut and extend at right angles toftheir upper and lower edges,. their inner side edges have upper `and lower portions I0 and I I, which are cut diagonally. Referring to Figure 6, it will be seen that the upper andlower portions III and I I of each rear section converge toward their inner ends in a direction to gradually increase the width of the section and intersect midway the length of the section and it will also be noted that the lower portions II of these inner side edges conform to the angle of the inner side edges 8 of the leg lextension l of the front section, and are also of the same length. By so cutting the edges 8 and I I, the side edges of the front and rear sections may be sewed together to form seams I2 l along inner sides of the leg extensions 2 ofthe garment and the leg extensions will be completed when the outer side edges 9 of the rear section sections are sewed to side edges of the front section and form seams I3 which extend from the waistband to the lower ends of the legs. The
seams l2 terminate at opposite sides of the upper end of the tongue or strip 6 and it will be readily seen that when sewing the front and rear sections together, this is done by straight seams which can be easily and quickly sewed with a sewing machine. After the side edges of the sections have been sewed together, the tongue or strip 6 is passed rearwardly between upper ends of the leg extension and upwardly at the back of the garment with its side edge portions sewed tothe upper portion I of the inner side edges of the rear section to form seams I4 and firmly unite the tongue or strip with upper portions of crease in width toward its upper end when sewed to the upper portions I0 of the side edges of the rear section. Therefore, a rear insert will be formed which adds to the comfortable t of the garment, as well `as permitting a person wearing the garment to lean over'or stoop without likelihood of ripping the garment at the back. I have, therefore, provided a garment of the bifurcated type which may be very easily and cheaply manufactured due to the fact that the sections forming the same all have their adjoining side edges sewed together by straight seams. It will also be seen that a garment so formed will have added fullness at the rear and will be free from a center seam at the back and through the crotch.
From the foregoing description, the construction of our improved garment will be readily understood. It is understood that while we have particularly described the preferred construction best adapted to accomplish the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: f
l. A bi'furcatedV garment comprising a `body having leg extensions. the sa-id body and its leg extensions consisting of a front section and rear sections, the front section having body and leg formi-ng portions and a tongue between the leg forming portions lintegrally'united at its upper end to the body-forming portion between upper ends of the leg-forming portions, the rear sections being seamed along their outer side edges to the side edges of the front section, the inner side edges of the rear sections each having diagonally extending upper and lower portions converging toward their inner ends in a direction to gradually increase the width of the section and intersecting at the crotch level of the garment, the lower portions of the inner edges of the rear sections being seamed to inner side edges of the leg extensions of the front section and* upper portions of the inner side edges of the rear sections diverging upwardly at the back of the garment, and said tongue being passed rearwardly between upper ends of the leg extensions and upwardly and seamed along its side edges to the diagonally extending upper portions of the inner edges of the rear sections to form a crotch portion integral with the front section and a seat portion at the back of the garment.
2. A bifurcated garment comprising a body having leg extensions and consisting of a front section 'and rear sections, the front section having an upper body-forming portion and being cut longitudinally from its lower end to .provide legforming portions extending downwardly from its body-forming portion and a tongue between the leg-forming portions, thesaid cuts converging upwardly to provide downwardly tapered leg forming portions and an upwardly tapered tongue having its upper end integrally united to the bodyforming portion at the crotch level of the garment, said rear sections being seamed along their outer side edges to side edges of the front section, the inner side edges of the rear sections each having diagonally extending upper and lower portions converging toward their inner ends in a direction to gradually increase the width of the section and intersecting at the crotch of the garment, the lower portions of the inner side edges of the rear sections being seamed to inner side edges of the leg-forming portions of the front section and form inner side seams for the leg extensions, the upper portions of the inner side edges of the rear sections diverging upwardly, and said tongue being carried rearwardly between upper ends of the leg extensions and upwardly at the back of the garment and being seamed along its side edges to the diverging upper portions of the inner side edges of the rear sections to form a seat-forming insert and a crotch portion integral with the said insert and the portion of the front section under the fly.
