W. L. DAVIDSON SASH STOP Filed Aug. 31, 1932 STTES PATENT QFFlCE.
WILL AM L. DAVI SQN, 0T C V N QN, K N CK SASI-I STOP.
Application filed August 31, 1922. Serial No. 585,474.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ,Vnuanar L. DAVlD- SUN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at (lovington, in the county of Kenton and iltate of Kentucky,-have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash Stops, of which the following is a specification The object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means which may be applied readily as an attachment for limiting the opening movement of a window sash to provide a means of protection againstunauthorized or surreptitious entrance through the window while permittii'ig a suf ficient opening thereof to afford ventilation and which will serve as a protection in this respect even though the sash may have been released by the use of a jimmy or similar tool from its closed and locked position; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of the sash stop embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a window where the lower sash is shown in dotted lines in the partly open or ventilating position and is limited in its movement by the stop.
Figure 2 is a sectional View enlarged and taken on a vertical plane through the frames of the sashes and showing the stop in its operative position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the stop in its folded position to permit of the further movement of the sashes.
Figure 4 is a detail view of the sash stop detached.
The device consists essentially of a stop ear 10 having a rearwardly extending tongue 11 projecting through a slot 12 in an attaching or base plate 13 adapted to be secured to the inner surface of the frame of a sash 14 which in this instance is the upper sash, said stop ear being mounted for pivotal movement so that it may be extended as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to 0ccupy a position invading and transverse to the path of movement of the lower sash 15 or in other words a position perpendicular to the plane of the sashes and their paths of movement, or may be arranged in a folded position substantially parallel with the attaching or base plate and hence paraling or base plate is provided with a rearwardly directed bracket 16 of which the side walls carried by the plate are spaced apart to receive the tongue of the stop ear, and upon which the tongue is mounted by means of the transversepivot 17, and the tongue is preferably provided with a shoulder 18 for contact with the rear surface of the plate when the stop ear is in its operative position. To maintain the stop ear in its adjusted positions there may be employed a catch 19 for engagement selectively with notches 20 in the tongue.
It will be obvious that by arranging the stop in its operative position when the sashes are closed and locked by the ordinary means provided for that purpose it will serve as an additional safe guard against the unauthorized opening of the sashes sufiiciently to permit of entrance through the window opening should a tool be used to break or displace the ordinary sash fastening means but which cannot be effectively used to destroy the stop, and that when it is desired to position one or both of the sashes to afford ventilation through a restricted opening, the further opening movement of the sashes is prevented to afford a reasonable degree of safety. On the other hand when it is desired to open one or both of the sashes to a greater extent than that provided for by the location of the stop, it may be varied to suit the preferences of the user, the step may be folded out of the path of the lower sash and permitted to lie in parallel relation with the paths of the sashes as indicated in Figure 3.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a sash stop, the combination with upper and lower sashes, the upper sash being provided with a countersunk seat in its side rail, of a plate secured to the side rail and provided with a bracket consisting of side walls engaging within the countersunk seat whereby the plate covers the seat, said plate having an opening coincident to the space between said walls, the lower edge of the opening extending above the lower ed es of the walls a sash sto )ro er comprising an abutment and a sector body, the body being pivoted between the walls of the bracket, and means secured to the plate and adapted to engage under the abutment opening coincident with the space between the bracket walls, a sash stop proper mounted in the opening and comprising an abutment ear and a sector body pivotally supported between the bracket walls, the construction and arrangement of the sector body being such as to extend below the lower edge of the opening and abut said plate to limit the abutment ear in a posi tion laterally of the outer face of the plate, and means fastened to the plate and adapted to engage with the under face of the abutment ear to hold it in said lateral position.
In testiinonywhereof he aflixes his signa ture.
