OTHEL JEFFERSON GEE, OF ARDliKOR-E, OKLAHOIKA, ASSIGNOR tszazes'" TO HARLIN W. STARK,
or GAINESVILLE, TEXAS.
COMBINATION ICE OR'I-IOT-WATER CAP ANDY BAG.
Application filed. June .1,
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known .that- I, OTHEL J. GEE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Ardmore, Carter Co., Oklahoma, haveinvented new and useful. Improvements in. Combination Ice or Hot-Water Caps and Bags, of -which the following is a specifi: cation.
This. inventionre-lates to combination ice orhot water caps and bags.
The object. is to, provide a leak-proof con-. tainer for. cracked or. shaved ice which may bezem'ployed as. acap for the head of-a patient, the same. having adjustable means for .fitting and I holding .the: cap :to heads of. differentsizesandin manner to prevent: its accidental dislod-gment or removal during the. movements of the wearer through de-. lirium or otherwise.
Another object is. to provide a device of this character having. separate compartments for. the front and back portions of. thehead, the same being adaptedto :be filled or. charged through; a singleopening; so that either or-both compartments may receive the. cooling .medium. for the. purpose of treating the frontportion of a patients head or; the back portion thereof independently or: so: that the entire head may besurrounded by the cooling medium.
A .furtherobject is..to provide such a device at a .low cost. of manufacture, thesame beingeasily filled and closed against'leakage and readily. applied-and fastened to the head of. the wearer," either a child orladult,'to treat any portion thereof, andwhich, when desirech'may be placed-in an open, flat conditionon any part of the body, covering a maximum amount of arearto cool the same or, by filling, the compartmentswith hot water, toact as an ordnary hot water bag in the usualmanner.
A full and complete .understandingof. the invention may be obtainedfrom a considerationof the. followingdetailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, it being understood that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not to be confined to strict conformity with the showing thereof, but may be changed or modified, so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features 1923. .Serial No. 643,444.
of the invention, astspecifically pointed. out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, inwhich similar. reference characters designate correspondingw parts throughout the several figures-z Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the. improved cap or bagapplied to-the headof a person;
Figure 2 is aplan View of .the device spread -.,out fiat, as when filling the 5sa1ne...-or. when. beingnsedas a hot. water .bottle'; and
Figure 3.is..a longitudinal sectional. view through the devi'ce.
Referring to the drawing,-thereiare. shown, with reference. to F ignre- 2, .opposite,":similar bagshl and 2, of substantially triangular shape and formed .of rubber, rubber-cloth, or other suitablewaterproof material, which is thin, soft and flexible, and which may be sewed .and cemented to preventtleakageor otherwise-treatedns in. ordinary ice caps or water bags.
The bag '1, which vis adapted to. be placed at the. front, of the head of the wearer, is preferably'somewhat smaller than the whiclrislocated at the back and-sides-cof the head, andeach comprises an. upper. triangular wallBand a similar. lower wall 4, the same being joined along:theirlong. outer edges by a reinforcing band 5, which-isfolded along its longitudinal median line so as to overlap both the upper and lower walls 3 .ande respectively. What. may be termed the apicesof the substantially triangular bags. are brought together at the center, the remaining sides of the triangles having-the reinforcing bands or strips 6 sewed and cemented thereto along the margins of the same so that two separate compartments are provided, the bags being open at their oined ends at the center, the lower wallset having the interior, transverse reinforcing-strip or band 7 secured thereto, as shown in Figure 8 of the drawing, and the upperwallsB, at their point of juncture, being flared up wardly to form a neck and suitably. con nected toa screw-threaded collar 8, provided with a suitable, threaded closure cap 9 constructed in the ordinary manner and adapted to be screwed into the mouth of the opening to prevent any leakage.
At the ends of the reinforcing band 5 conv nected to the margin of the front bag and adapted to surround the brow of the wearer,
are located a plurality of snap buttons 10 arranged in spaced relation to each other, and at the ends of the other reinforcing band 5 located at the back of the head of the wearer, are snap sockets 11, also spaced apart and adapted to be fastened to the aforesaid buttons in a well known manner, to cause the bands 5--5 to surround the head of the wearer, and by adjusting the fasteners to securely hold the bag or bags in place, the entire top of the head being covered, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing.
By removing the closure cap 9, the cracked ice and water or shaved ice may be placed in either or both of the compartments through the single opening, and the device applied and adjusted to the head of a pa tient for the purpose of cooling the same in treatments of various illnesses and complaints. In like manner the device may be filled with hot Water and used in the manner common to such appliances and for the same purposes, and the device is especially well adapted for use by physicians and surgeons during hot weather while performing operations on patients, it being customary then to fill one or the other or both of the compartments with shaved ice.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple, cheaply manufactured, and easily applied appliance of this character has been provided, which will fit any ordinary sized head, and may be securely fastened in position thereon, the said device havingmeans for cooling any portion or all of the head, and that the patient cannot accidentally dislodge or remove the same while asleep or during delirium, and that the device may be used on other parts of the body or in surrounding relation to limbs, etc., or in the same manner as a hot water bottle.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pair of bags, each having the shape of a triangle approximately, one being smaller than the other, said bags being connected at their inner smaller ends and provided thereat with a single filling opening, and means for detachably connecting the bags together along their outer margins so as to form a cap covering the entire head, said connecting means permit-ting the bags to be opened out fiat and applied to other parts of the body.
2. In a device of the. class described, the combination of a pair of bags substantially triangular in shape joined at their smaller ends, and means for detachably connecting the larger ends of the bags to each other to form a cap covering the entire head, said connecting means permitting the bags to be opened out flat and applied to other parts of the body.
3. An ice cap or bag comprising a pair of opposed, water-tight bags having substantially triangular top and bottom walls and joined at their apices to form independent compartments provided with a single filling opening for both compartments, a closure for said opening, and fasteners carried by the opposite, outer margins of each bag so that the two bags may either be fastened about the head of a person and used as a cap to cover the entire head with the filling opening at the top of the head, or the two bags may be distended and used as a hot water bottle on any part of the body.
An ice cap or bag comprising a pair of opposed, water-tight bags having top and bottom walls and joined at their inner meeting edges to form independent compartments provided with a single filling opening for both con'ipartments, closure 'for said opening, and a plurality of fasteners carried by the opposite outer margins of each bag so that the two bags may either be fastened about the head of a person and used as a cap to cover the entire head with the filling opening at the top of the head or the two bags may be distended and used as a hot water bottle on any part of the body.
5. A pair of bags, each formed of an upper triangular Wall and a. lower triangular wall joined along their outer edges by awreinforcing band, said bags being arranged withtheir smaller ends contiguous to each other, the lower wall of one bag be ing joined to the lower wall of the adjacent bag at their inner meeting edges by a reinforcing band, the upper Walls of the two bags at their inner meeting edges being flared upwardly to form a neck, a collar secured in said neck, a closure for said collar, and fastening means secured to said bands along the outer curved margins of the bags so that the bags may be disposed to cover the entire head of a person to form a cap with the fastening means at the bottom, or the fastening means may be disconnccted and the bags opened out flat and ap plied to other parts of the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature.
OTHEL JEFFERSON GEE.
