.3 Me GZassan/ ATTORNEY.
A e-tented Jan. n, 1925,
s r r a? is i i DAILY MCGLASSON, OF
FRANKFORT HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS.
GARTER.
Application filed January 13, 1923. Serial No; 612,470.
I! '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAILY McGLAssoN,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Frankfort Heights, in the county of Franklin and State of Illinois, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specifieation.
This invention relates to garment support- Fi ing devices, having reference particularly to an improved garter adapted especially for supporting hosiery.
The invention has for its objects the provision of an article of this character which embodies novel features of durability and utility in a very simple and inexpensive construction, which may be worn without liability of. abrading the skin of a wearer, and which is readily adjustable for fitting human legs of various proportions.
In carrying out my invention, I employ an elastic band having non-elastic end eXtensions, clips adjustably mounted on said end extensions, and means for adjustably holding said clips, all as hereinafter fully de scribed and soecifically set forth in the ap pended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view illustrating an exampleof my invention; and i Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
in the drawings, 1 indicates a strap of elastic webbing adapted to be turned around the leg of a wearer beneath the knee joint and over the top part of the back and upper partof the calf, the ends being forwardly and downwardly extending and crossed at the front of the leg, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Fixed to each end of the strap 1, by means of rows ofstitching 2, is a length of nonelastic. flexible material 3 havinga plurality of button holes 4.
Detachably and adjustably engaging each end member 8 is a clip 5, composed preferably of sheet metal, said clip consisting of a body part 6 having parallel slots 7 and 8, and an end extension 5 having a tapered slot for clampingly engaging a tuft or fold of the upper edge of the hose to be supported, in the common and well known manner.
Extending forwardly from the body part 6 of the clip element 5, at a point equidistantbetween the slots 7 and 8, is a button 9 conif sisting of a shank 10 and head 11 adapted for coupled engagement with one of the button holes 4.
In the operation and use of the device the clip. elements 5 are assembled and connected to the respective end lengths 3, by looping said end lengths through the slots 7 and 8 and coupling selected ones of the button holes 1 with the buttons 9, the rearwardly located parts of said lengths lying back of the slip-elements 5, whereby said elements 5 are spaced from the surface of the leg of the wearer of the device to obviate liability of abrasion of the skin by contact with the metal clip-elements.
It is manifest thatby adjusting the clipelements on the ends of the device the garter may be either lengthened or shortened to meet requirements andthe clip-elements are maintained out'of contact with the skin of the wearer, whereby comfort is assured and skin abrasions are obviated.
I do not confine myself to the specific form of clip element shown and described, as under the spirit of my invention I believe that I am entitled to employ such variations as may be found desirable without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a garter, incombination, an elastic web having a plurality of button holes in its end portions, two rigid clips each having a plurality of transverse parallel open in gs through which the web is passed, a button carried by each clip capable of passing through one of the button holes and a hosilery maintaining means carried by each 0 1p.
2. In a garter, in combination, an elastic web, a non-elastic web attached to each end of the elastic web and having a plurality of openings, a metallic clip carried by each non-elastic member having a plurality of transverse parallel openings through which the non-elastic web passes and a vertically positioned hosiery gripping opening and a button carried by each clip capable of passing through the non-elastic web openings.
Signed at West Frankfort, in the county of Franklin and State of Illinois, this3rd day of January, A. D. 1923.
DAILY ncenasson.
