T 0 all whom it may concer Be it known that l, JOHN S. TAYLOR, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and in the State of Delaware, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Closures, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to a device designed to act as a closure for boxes or cans of various different types, although it has application especially to boxes for shipping explosive powder of various kinds.
The object of my invention is to provide a closure which is so arranged that it may be manufactured in large quantities without difficulty and which is, furthermore, of such as a nature and construction that it will effectively close the can or box to which it is applied, and which is of such a character, furthermore. as to be locked in place when once moved into closed position.
A further object is to provide a construction of this character' which may he made at a comparatively low cost.
A further object is to provide a flexible and positive seal for boxes or cans and in which the pressure of the closure may be regulated to suit the Condit-ions.
Further objects of my invention will appear from the detailed description thereof contained hereinafter.
While my invention is capable of embodiment in many different forms`r for the purpose of illustration l have shown only one form thereof in the accompanying drawin in which- Figure 1 is sure, enlarged:

In the drawings I have shown a portion of a box or can having a sheet metal inner lining 1 located within a wooden outer casing 2. The lining 1 may be made of Zinc or any other suitable metal, and may be made in one or more portions, and with any number of desired seams, by soldering or otherwise. In the top of the lining 1 there is an annular steel neck 3, which has an inner flange 4L, adapted to be secured to the inside of the lining 1 by solder or otherwise. The neck 8 is provided outside of the wooden casing 2 with an enlargement 5 comprising an upwardly-directed rib 6 to engage and provide a seat for an annular rubber gasket 7. The gasket extends beyond the rib 6 into a depression 8, so as to lie within an outer wall 9 on the neck 3. which wall 9 leads to three laterally extending downwardly-curved flanges 10 on said neck 3, each of which has a notch lO'therein. Upon its upper surface the gasket 7 is designed to be pressed downwardly by a downwardly-directed rib 11 on a. cover 12, said cover having an upwardly-directed concave flanged portion 13 connected to a vertical wall 14, which forms, with an inner fiat portion 15, a downwardly-directed eX- tension fitting within the neck 3. The inner flat portion 15 has a number of radiallydirected ribs 16, and is provided at its central point with a curved depression 17 to receive the inner end of a screw 18. which has a .head 19, carrying a perforation 2O to receive a wire-and-lead seal of the usual type. The screw 18 is carried by a screwthreaded ring 21 secured to a spider 22 having three arms 23, each of which has at its outer end a downwardly and upwardlythe downwardly-curved lianges 10 on the neck 3, and in such a way that upwardly-directed projections on the arms 23 interlock with the notches l()a thereon. The said spider 22, furthermore, has between the arms 3 downwardly-directed fianges 2G, to strengthen the same. Again, one of the arms 23 is provided with 'an upwardly-directed transverse strap 27 to receive the wire-and-lead seal, which passes also through the peiforatkin 2O in the screw 13.
In the operation of my invention, the can or box having been constructed by flanging over the neck 3 so as to form the flange 4f on the inside of the inner lining thereof l and soldering or otherwise securing the flange to the lining l, after the contents of the can or box have been introduced into the same, the rubber gasket 7 is applied over the rib 6 and the cover is applied in such a manner that the downwardly-directed extension thereon passes into the neck 3, thus applying the rib thereon to the upper surface of the gasket 7. Thereupon the spider 22 is applied by introducing the arms 23 between the downwardly-curved flanges and rotating the same until the projections 25 on the arms 23 register with the notches l0El on said projections. The screw 18 is then introduced into the ring 2l and screwed down, thus bringing about a compression of the gasket 7 between the ribs 6 and ll and thus tightly closing the can or box.
It will be noted that, once the screw 18 has been screwed down, the spider 22 cannot become loosened accidentally, as said spider is locked in place, due to the engagement of the projections 25 with the notches 10a. The wire-and-lead seal may he then applied by passing the same through the perforation 20 and under the strap 27. The closure of the can or box is then in such a position as not only to prevent the passage of the gases and liquids through the neck 3, but said closure is effectively locked in place, so as to remain indefinitely in this position until it is desired to open the can or box.
While I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
l. A closure comprising a. neck having an inner flange adapted to underlie the walls of an opening, an outer flange adapted to overlie such walls and provide a seat, and laterally-extending flanges overlying said seat, a spider adapted to engage under said laterally-extending flanges, al cover located between said spider and said neck, and means on said spider for forcing said cover toward said seat.
2. A closure comprising an annular neck ladapted to be received within an opening, said neck having at its upper end an annular seat adapted to rest onthe walls of the opening, the metal above said seat being shaped to provide an annular upwardly-extending outer wall surrounding said seat and flanges extending laterally therefrom above the seat, a spider having an edge adapted to engage under said flanges, a sheet-metal cover between said spider and -said neck having an annular flange adapted to co-operate with said seat, and means on said spider for forcing said cover towards said seat.
3. A closure comprising an annular neck adapted to be received within an opening, said neck having at its upper end an annular seat adapted to rest on the walls of the opening, the metal above said seat being shaped to provide an annular upwardly-extending outer wall and lateral flanges eX- tending outwardly therefrom, a spider having edges turned over and directed inwardly to engage under said flanges, a cover be-f tween said spider and said neck and means on said spider for forcing said cover towards said seat.
Ll. A closure comprising a neck portion having an annular seat adapted to rest upon* the exterior walls of an opening, a cover having an outer rim adapted to overlie said seat, a spider overlying said cover, and means acting between said spider and'said neck portion for forcing the rim of said-v cover toward said seat.
5. A closure comprising a neck portion having an annular seat adapted to rest upon the exterior walls of an opening, a cover having a central portion fitting within said neck portion and an outer rim adapted to overlie said seat, a spider overlying said cover, means for interlocking said spider with said neck portion, and a device upon said spider for forcing the rim of said cover toward said seat.
6. A closure comprising an annular neck of sheet-metal adapted to be received within an opening, said neck having at its upper end an annular seat adapted to rest on the walls of the opening, the metal above said seat being shaped to provide an annular upwardly-extending vouter wall and fianges extending laterally therefrom, a spider having an edge adapted to engage under said flanges, said edge and flanges being provided with a co-operating projection and recess to prevent rotation of the spider when in operative position, a cover between said spider and said neck and means on said spider for forcing said cover towards said seat.
7. A closure comprising an annular neck adapted to be received within an opening, said neck having at its upper end an annular seat adapted to rest on the walls of the opening, the metal above said seat being shaped to provide an annular upwardly-extending outer wall and flanges extending laterally therefrom, a gasket disposed on said seat and having its outer side resting against said outer wall, a spider having an edge adapted to engage under said flanges, a cover between said spider and said neck, said Cover having an annular flange adapted to rest on said gasket, and a vertical wall engaging the inner side of the gasket, whereby the gasket is confined between the vertical wall of the cover and the aforesaid outer wall, and lneans on said spider for 10 forcing said cover towards said seat.
