' CAN-CLOSURE.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, EUGENE P.. STARCKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Arthur, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to means for closing cans and like packages contai'ningliquid, the purpose being to secure the can in a manner to prevent tampering with the contents without rendering detection possible and also to enable the contents of the can to be poured off without waste 'and likewise to guard against loss by evaporation and to prevent foreign matter finding its way into the can or package.
The invention provides a can closure which is adapted for general use and which maintains the discharge opening in closed position at alltimes, whether the sealing cap has-been replaced or not, thereby preventing loss by evaporation and keepin the contents of the can from being impaired by the entrance .of foreign matter into the can.
'The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a can provided with closin means embodying the invention, the cap %eing omitted.

The numeral 1 designates a can, package or container of any type adapted to be supplied with closing means embodying the in vention. The top of the can or containerl is provided with an opening which is located inone corner and from which projects a collar 2. An inner shoulder 3 is provided at Specification of Letters Patent.

A cylinder 9 telescopes within the cylinder 5 and is provided with outwardly extending lugs 10 which enter and operate in the vertical slots 8, whereby to limit the outward movement of the cylinder 9 and prevent its turning in the cylinder 5. The cylinder 9 is open throughout its length and constitute a spout through which the contents of the can are'drawn off, An inner shoulder or flange 11 is provided at the inner or lower end of the cylinder 9 and is adapted to engage the packing 7 and obtain a close joint therewith to prevent any loss by evaporation. A valve 12 closes the outer end of the cylinder 9 and is of the butterfly type, being pivoted on a diametrical line. A tight joint is maintained between the cylinder 9 and the collar 2 by means of the packing 4 which has its inner edge engaging the outer side of the cylinder 9, said packing being retained in position by means of a shell 13 which is snugly fitted upon the collar 2 and is retained in place thereon by interengaging portions pressed outwardly from the collar 2 and shell 13. The shell 13 is provided at its upper end .with an inner shoulder or flan e 14 which overhangs the packing 4 and co nes it between the parts 3 and 14. The upper portion of the shell 13 is formed with a screw-thread 15 which is adapted to engage a correspondingly threaded portion 16 of a" cap 17 by means of which the closure is made secure. The cap 17 receives a packing 18 in a manner well understood which insures the formation of a tight joint when the cap 17 is properly positioned upon the shell 13. r
The can, package or container 1 is provided with the collar 2 in any well known the shell 13 so as to embrace the collar, portions of the shell and collar being crimped by a suitable tool to prevent their separation. A sealing strip 19 extends over the valve 12 and is secured at its end to the shell preferably by being soldered thereto. This prevents outward movement of the cylinder 9 and a turning of the valve 12 thereby preventing the contents of the can from being tampered with, thereby insuring to the customer the goods originally placed in the can and as designated by the label applied to the can. 'VVhen it is required to obtain the contents of the can the cap 17 is removed and the sealing strip 19 cut or otherwise displaced to admitof opening of the valve 12 and the drawing outwardly of the cylinder 9 preliminary to pouring oil the contents of the can therethrough. The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to, what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may proveexpedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A can or container having anopening, a collar in line with the opening and having an inner shoulder at its outer end, a fixed cylinder depending from the inner edge of said shoulder and having its inner end closed and longitudinal slots in its sides, a packing supported on the closed end of the fixed cylinder, a sliding cylinder within the fixed cylinder and having outwardly extending lugs entering the longitudinalslots ther of, avalve at the outer end of the sliding cylinder, a packing supported on the inner shoulder of the collar and in close contact with the outer side of the sliding cylinder, a shell secured to the collar and retaining the packing in position, a sealing member extending over the valve and secured to the shell and a cap threaded on the outer end of the shell.
