UNITED STATES FFICE.
BENJAMIN G. DEVOE, OF KENTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM L. VALKER, OF SAME PLAGE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN '|RON FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,574, dated June 2, 1874; application iled December 1l, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, BENJAMIN G. DEvoE, of Kenton, in the county of Hardin, andin the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Fences 5 and do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and io the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fences made of iron and other metal; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the horizontal rails, pickets, and ornaments, as well as in the devices for fastening said parts together to form a substantial and strong fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a front view of so much of an iron fence as will illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same through the line a' Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section through the line y y, Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a detached view, showing a part of the picket and the central clamp.
A represents the horizontal rail, and B the picket. These are made of oval or rounded T-shaped iron bars, having a semicireular groove, a, running the entire length, as shown. rIhe ornament is all made in one piece, and is composed of a cylindrical horizontal bar, D, top and bottom pieces G G, which are made to tit over the picket B, and braces E E, connecting them together, and may be made in any suitable or desired coniiguration. In the center of the bar D is a semicircular swell, with an upward-proj ectin g semicircular flange, b. This swell and iiange fit over the picket B in a notch, d, made in the same, and the bar D, being made round, iits in the semicircular recess a in the rail A. These parts are firmly fastened together by means of acenter clamp,
H, and two end clamps, I I. The center clamp His constructed as shown in Fig. 4, with two jaws, f, or lips, having each a large hole through it. This cla-mpH passes around the back of the horizontal rail A, and also around the picket B, which latter passes through the holes in the jaws ff. The upper jaw goes around the semieircular iange b, and the lower jaw iits in a notch, d', on the picket. rIhis forms a clamping device which holds the ornament, picket, and longitudinal rail perfectly solid together, and makes a strong` and substantial arrangement to put the fence together with. The fastenings I I are constructed as shown in Fig. 3, to slip over the rail A, and are provided with a semicircular recess, a', to iit over the ends of the round bar D of the ornament, thus forming a fastening that presses said bar into the hollow or recess in the rail A, to forni a brace for keeping the rail from sagging, and holds the ornament securely in place. The next ornament of the next panel is slipped into this fastener, and so on until a panel is put together. The lower or middle rails are fastened in the same manner, onlyr the top ofthe ornament is disposed of to be used as a fastener below.
Having thus fully described my invention,
BENJAMIN e. DEvoE.
