Totall-aohom may concern:
.Be it known that I, HARRY Armenia, a subject of the ,King of Great Britain, residsingat South Norwood, London, '9). E. 25,
England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lidded Receptacles,
of which the following-is a specification.
flhis invention relates to lidded receptacles, particularlysofithe kind-which are manufaetnreelfrom :thin sheet metal and used for ithe'reception of inking pads for use it :r hhe s amps Now :a :main object of" the present inven- "fiioiliis to provide a box which maybe easily opened with one hand without getting ink on the fingers.
Another object is to obtain a-substantially airtight box, while at the same time providing a lidded receptacle in which the lid so easily fits the box .that a slight effort of merely aithumb'engagement by the operator obtains access to the interior of the box.
Another object ;is to construct the front wall of the box so that it does not tend to spring away from the body and bind on the lid o'f-the box.
Another object is to so form the lid as to receive a label which is protected by the formation of the lid.
In the accompanying drawing is illus trated a preferred construction of a lidded receptacle embodying the present invention, in which:
Fig. 1 is a View of the box when opened:
2 is a view of the box when closed; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the box shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The lid 1 is provided with side flanges 2 and a front flange 3, all of which are preferably made in the usual manner by bending over from a sheet of material. The body of the box to which the lid 1 is hinged, as indicated at 4., comprises sides 5 and a front wall 6 having a ledge 7, the sides 5 and the front wall 6 being preferably made integral with the material forming the bottom of the box, the body also comprising a rear wall 8, which is adapted to carry the hinge pin for connection with the lid.
In making the front wall 6 of the body of the box it will be noticed the material is bent upwards, first along a line in advance of the front of the side walls, whereon the material is doubled on itself and forms the ledge 7, and secondly, folded along a line fill Serial 15105593523.
substantially coinci dent with the :front 'ofthe sides 5 to form the front wall 6 of the .box.
is to be noted that this particular 10d of forming the front flange 6xobtains itructirm in which the flange 6 does not to spring back away from the inking pad to cause binding on the inside of the front flangepf the lid, as is the general tend ency in ordinary inking pads when the front vi -all is formedby merely turning up the material fro-m'the bottom of-the box in the manner used for the formation of :the side walls according to the present invention,
New in order to preventthe lid from overiping the body portionto such an'extent to cause binding at the sides, the front mange of the lid is of such a depth that when its bottom edge rests on the ledge 7 the sides 2 of the lid. only overlap the top of the sides 5 of the body and do not bind thereon.
However, in the case of inking pads, it is preferred to have the box as airtight as possible considering the type of manufacture, and to this end the side walls 5 (and front wall if desired) are inclined at the top, as indicated at 10, so as to allow the side flanges of the lid to pass freely over the top portion, but as soon as the side flanges of the lid reach the upright portion of the side flanges of the body, binding commences, but as this is coincident with the engagement of the front flange of the lid with the ledge on the body, only a very slight binding obtains between the sides of the box, but is sufficient to prevent free circulation of air over the inking pad.
The front flange 3 of the lid may be provided with a ridge pressed out from the material of the flange, as indicated at 11, for convenience in manipulation.
It will be seen by the construction that there is no binding between the side walls of the box and the lid, or the front wall 6 of the body and the flange 3 of the lid, so that the box can readily be opened, without being held, by a mere thumb engagement of the ridge 11. on the lid, whereon the lid can be easily lifted.
The present invention therefore eliminates the inconvenience obtaining with ordinary inking pads, wherein the lid often binds with the body portion so that a considerable effort is required to obtain access to the pad.
flange engages the base beyond said flange onsaid lid, said front flange being adapted to engage said base beyond said front Wall and limit the closing movement of said lid,'said side walls beingcinwardly inclined so as to permit the side flanges of the if -"lid to pass freely over the said side wallsof the body'portion and'only commence to bind on said side walls at the moment said front front wall.
2. In a lidded receptacle of thin sheet metal, particularly for the reception of an inking pad, the combination with a body portion having side walls and a front wall formed by doubling the sheet metal on itself and again at right angles so as to form a base extension beyond said front wall, of a lid hinged to said body portion and fitting loosely thereover, side flanges and a front flange on said lid, said front flange being adapted to engage said base extension and limit the closing movement of said lid, said portion having side walls and a front wall formed by doubling the sheet metal on itself.
and again at right angles so as to form a base extension beyond said front all, of a lid lunged to said body portion and fitting loosely thereover, side flanges and a front flange on said l1d, sa1d front flange be ng adapted to engage said base extension, and
limit the closing movement of said lid, said side walls being inwardly inclined so'asto permit the side flanges of'the 'lid to pass freely over the said side walls of the body portion and only commence'to bind on said side walls at the moment said front flange engages the base beyond said front wall, a ridge formed on said front flange, whereby the lid may be lifted from the body portion, a recessed portion on said lid, and a label eractly fitting and lying Within said recessed portion. I I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
