GARMENT FASTENER AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR JOHN SHER- Rlrr, of Bristol, England, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Fasteners and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fasteners for garments and the like of which the edges overlap. It is particularly applicable to such articles as corsets.

The usual type of corset fastening consists of two superimposed strips of flexible material, the lower of which is provided. with studs running from top and bottom and the upper of which is provided with a series of eyes corresponding to the studs and adapted to engage with and grip the studs. A great objection to this type of fastening is the difficulty frequently encountered owing to the necessity for considerably increasing the tension on the overlapping edges of the garment beyond the normal to make them overlap sufiiciently to permit the studs to engage and disengage. The object of this invention is to provide a fasten ing wherein it shall not be necessary to exert considerably increased tension beyond the normal on the overlapping edges when securing or undoing the fastening.

Fasteners for garments or the like made in accordance with this invention comprise flexible strips adapted to be superimposed and securely held at or near one or both ends against relative to and fro motion whilst between the ends they are securely held preferably by a stud and socket device against relative longitudinal and transverse motion when the fastener is closed.

Referring to the drawings, the under and over strips a, b, of the fastener are made of steel or other suitably resilient material of the form shown. In operation the strips a and b are sewn or otherwise secured to the material of the corset at the edges to be fastened leaving holes to enable the ends 0? and stud f to engage with their respective sockets c and 9. To assemble and close the fastener the strip 6 is superposed on strip a and bent until its ends cl slip into the sockets 6, after which it is released so that the ends slip home into the sockets and the strips are held thereby against undesirable relative to and fro movement of the strips after they have been fastened together to close the fastener. This release allows the hole or socket f to pass over the stud 9 so that the strips are thereby held against relative longitudinal and transverse movement. Thus a fastening is provided wherein it is not necessary to exert considerably increased tension beyond the normal on the overlapping edges when securing or undoing the fastening.

Modifications of the device might be made.

For instance, the stud might be put on the upper strip and the hole in the lower, or again, the sockets might be placed on the side of the lower strip remote from the top strip and slits provided for the ends of the top to pass through; or slits might be provided in place of sockets, or again the top and bottom strips might be interchanged.

Indeed, it will be readily understood that the device may be modified in various ways, without departing from the scope of the invention.
