Description

Sept. 23, 1924.
' c. B..HAGEN DRAIN ATTACHMENT or: HAND OPEfiATED PUMPS File d May 12 1924 Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
CARL BENNETT I-IAGEN, OF UTE, IOWA.
DRAIN ATTAOI-IIvIENT FDR HAND-O'I-ERATEIJ PUMPS.
Application filed. May 12,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CARL BENNETT I-LienN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ute, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Drain Attachment for Hand-Operated Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in draining devices which are principally adapted for use in connection with hand operated pumps and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient device which may be readily and easily attachedto a pump for the purpose of draining the water in the stand pipe during the cold weather to prevent freezing and the bursting of the stand pipe.
One of the important objects of the present-inventionis to provide a draining device of the above mentioned character, wherein the stand pipe of the pump is pro vided with a drain cock, means being as sociated therewith and connected with the handle of the pump whereby the drain cock simultaneously opens and closes with the operation of the handle of the pump.
A further object of the invention is to provide a draining device of the above mentioned character, wherein the drain cock actuating means is provided with a stop for limiting the movement thereof in one direction.
A still further object is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a well known type of hand operated pump, the same being in an open position and showing my attachment in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a similar View, the pump being in a closed or inoperative position, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 33 of Figure 2.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 1924. Serial No. 712,691.
designatesa hand operated pump of a well known construction and the same includes the stand pipe 2 and the usual handle 3 for actuating the pump, During cold weather when the pump is in an inoperative position, the water in the stand pipe oftentimes will freeze and will result in the bursting of the stand pipe whereby the pump is rendered inoperative and further necessitates thereplacing of the old stand pipe with a new one. To obviate the necessity of having. .to continually replace bursted stand pipes and to prevent the freezing of the water therein, I have provided a drain attachment in connection therewith which is furthermore adapted to be connected to the handle of the pump so a to enable the same to be actuated simultaneously with the operation: of. the handle.
My drain attachment comprises. a drain cock or valve 4 which maybe of any con ventional construction and the same is arranged in the stand pipe 2 at any desirable point. A clamping bracket uch as is shown at 5 is further associated with the drain cock and encircles the adjacent portion of the stand pipe in the manner clearly shown in the drawing. Connected to the valve and providing a means for actuating the same is the substantially inverted T-shaped member 6. The leg of the T-shaped member has its outer end bifurcated for receiving the handle 7 of the valve 4 and any suitable fastening means such as is shown at 8 is provided for securing the bifurcated end of the leg of the T-shaped member to the handle 7 of the valve 4:-
Secured to one of the arms 9 of the substantially inverted T-shaped member 6 is the lower end of an elongated vertically arranged rod 10. The upper portion of the rod 10 extends through a suitable guide bracket 11 which is mounted upon the stand pipe 2 adjacent the head thereof in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawing. The upper end of the rod 10 is threaded for co operation with a turn buckle 12 and a short rod 13 has one end thereof threaded into the opposite end of the turn buckle while the upper end of the rod 13 is connected to the operating handle 3 of the pump 1. The connection between the handle and the substantially T-shaped member 6 provides a means whereby the valve will be simultaneously actuated upon the operation of the handle 3 in the manner as is obvious from the construction shown and heretofore described.
Fastened to the other arm 14 of the substantially 'T-shaped member 6 is the stop member 15. The provision of this stop member is to provide a means for engagement with the stand pipe 2 of the pump 1 when the handle thereof is in an inoperative or downwardly extending position so as to limit the inward swinging movement of the T-shaped member whereby the valve 4 may be kept open for draining the stand pipe.
The operation of my drain attachment may be briefly stated as follows: WVith the parts normally arranged as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, the drain valve is open and the water in the stand pipe above the drain valve will be caused to drain from the pipe thereby preventing the freezing of the water in the pipe. When the pump is operated, the upward movement of the handle 3 will simultaneously cause an upward movement of the rods 10 and 13 and the T- shaped member being connected to the lower end of the rod 10 and also fastened to the valve will also be caused to be swung upwardly closing the valve and preventing the water from draining from the pipe through the valve. As the handle is moved downward, the T-shaped member will swing downwardly and inwardly simultaneously opening the valve. An attachment of this character may be readily and easily attached to a pump and the parts are further so arranged as to enable the same to be removed whenever desired, it being understood of course that during warm weather the opcrating means for the valve may be detached from the handle in a comparatively simple manner. The simplicity of my device enables the same to be manufactured at a very low cost and the parts are further strong and durable.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A drain attachment for a hand operated pump comprising a drain valve in the stand pipe of said pump, a valve actuating member associated with the valve comprising a substantially T-sbaped member, the leg thereof being connected to the valve, :1 connection between one of the arms of the T-shaped member and the handle of the pump whereby the valve actuating member is operated thereby to open and close the valve, and a stop member carried by the other arm of the T-shaped member for engagement with the stand pipe to limit the movement of the T-shaped member in one direction.
2. A drain attachment for a hand operated pump comprising a drain valve in the stand pipe of the pump, a valve actuating member associated with said valve, an elongated rod connected at one end to the valve actuating means and at its opposite end to the handle of the pump whereby said valve actuating means is operated by the handle to open and close said valve, guide means for said rod, and a stop member associated with the valve actuating means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CARL BENNETT HAGEN.
