' R.' w. FLAGG UMBRELLA HOLDER Filed June 21 1922 Patented Sept. 9, 1924:o
UNITED STATES ROGER w. FLAGG, or nomas FERRY, Nnw Yoan. UMBanJmA` HOLDER.
Application filed June 21, 1922. Serial No. 569,931. l
T all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I. ROGER W. FLAGG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Dobbs Ferry, in the 4county of Westchester 5 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Holders, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to an umbrella holder. The object' ofthe invention is the production of a holder, by means of which an umbrella can be easily and detachably supported. A second object of the invention is the production of a holder, by means of which the tip end of an umbrella stick can be detachably clamped, sothat the said tip end of the umbrella stick will be above and the handle end thereof below. A third object of the invention is the production of 30 a holder, with which an umbrella can be clamped in an upside-down position, by means of which the water in the cover of the umbrella will flow toward the wide or open end thereof instead of towardv the crown or closed end, thereby enabling the water in the cover to evaporate quickly and prevent its accumulation at the tipend and .avoiding thereby the rapid deterioration of the umbrella. Various other objects can also be clampedby the holder. In they accompanying drawings Fig. l shows an eX- emplification of the holder clamping an umbrella upside down or at its tip end; Fig. 2 shows an enlarged elevation of the holder with a portion thereof in axial section; Fig. 3 represents a top plan view of Fig. 2 with an element omitted and Fig. .4 indicates a section of Fig. 2 on the line H. v
The holder comprises the cylindrical mainv sleeve 20 that is slit at 21,-.to form the clamping prongs 22, that normally extend outwardly from the axial center line of the said sleeve for the greater portion of their length and then extend inwardly Ito form the clamping fingers 23.` A clamping sleeve 415k 25 with the flange 26is slidably supported y on the sleeve 20'. A supporting ring 28 is f indicated with the bent ends 29 which eX- tend through openings in the sleeve 2O to support it. To usev the holder, the sleeve'25 is moved upwardlyl by bearing on the rflange 26 to locate it in the position indicated in Fig.
2. The ltip end 30` of an lumbrella stick 31l ofran umbrella 32, is then brought up bevtween the'clamping lingers 23.4 Next the sleeve 25 is brought down, so that the prongs 22 and the clamping lingers 23 will simultaneously clamp the' .tip yend 30, to ksecure the umbrella 32 in place. The ring 28 can 60 then be supported on a hook 33. Y
Various modifications may be made inthe invention without departing from the spiritv thereof, and the present exempliiication is to be taken as illustrative rand not limita- 66V i' tive thereof. K
Having described my' invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1s .In a' holder. of the character described the 70 combination of a main sleeve having slits therein to form clamping prongs that norymally extend outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the sleeve, clamping lingers formed with the lower portions of the 7`5 prongs and extending inwardly, a clamping l sleeve having a ii'ange, slidably supported on the main sleeve andenabled to be moved on said prongs, to kbe enabled to clamp an object simultaneously with said prongs and I said clamping fingers and a supporting ring connected tothe main sleeve to support it, y
'substantially as described.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 17th day of June, A. D. 1922.
