T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders, designed more particularly for holding brooms, but it is to be understood that a holder, in accordance with this invention can be employed for any purposes wherein it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a holder including a pair of ad justable resilient clamping arms whereby broom handles, milk bottles, cans, billiard cues of varying diameters may be suspended and temporarily supported in such manner that they may be easily removed and replaced to and from engagement with said arms.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a holder for the purpose set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly efficient and convenient in its use, readily anchored to a support, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder in accordance with this invention, showing the adaptation thereon in connection with the suspending and temporary supporting of a broom, the latter being illustrated in dotted lines.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder showing the clamping arms thereof in frictional engagement with the handle of a broom.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a holder in accordance with this invention includes a body member formed of a strip of metallic material of substantial length and thickness so as to provide a substantially rigid suspending element for a pair of clamping members, and the said strip is shaped to set up the body member constructed with a rectangular intermediate portion 1 of substantial length and a pair of angle-shape end portions, each formed with an inclined leg 2 extending inwardly and outwardly with respect to a terminus of the intermediate portion 1 and which terminates in a leg 3 disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of the intermediate portion 1: The legs 2 of the angle-shape end portions extend in opposite directions with respect to each other and each of the legs 3 is formed with an opening 4: for the passage of a hold-fast device 5 to fixedly secure the holder to a wall or other support 6. The providing of the body member with the end portions formed with the inclined legs 2, when the body member is secured to the wall or support 6, maintains the intermediate portion 1 forwardly of and in spaced relation with respect to the wall or support 6. The intermediate portion 1, between its center and each terminus thereof, as well as centrally thereof, is provided with a lengthwise extending rectangular slot and such slots are indicated at 7, 8.

Adjustably connected to and projecting forwardly from the intermediate portion 1 of the body member, is a pair of oppositely disposed clamping members and each of which consists of a base 9, having extending from its inner terminus and at an angle with respect therewith, a resilient clamping arm 10 of ogee curvature. The setting up of each of the clamping arms of ogee curvature provides a seat 11 and a flaring outer end terminal 12. As the clamping members are oppositely disposed with respect to each other, the seats 11 of the clamping arms 10* oppose each other and are adapted to frictionally engage with the broom handle 13, for the purpose of suspending the same, as well as to temporarily support it in such manner that it may be easily removed and replaced when occasion so requires. The arms beingresilient will support the handle 13 in the manner shown in dotted lines, Figure 1. The flaring ends 12 of the clamping arms 10, are oppositely disposed with respect to each other and which provide for the convenient entrance of a broom handle when the same is positioned to be held suspended through the medium of the arms 10. The base 9 of each clamping member is provided with a centrally disposed opening 14.

The base 9 of each clamping member is arranged against the outer face of the inter mediate portion 1, at one side of the center thereof and with the opening let in alignment with a slot 7 or 8. The clamping members are laterally adjustable relative to each other for the purpose of positioning the clamping arms in properly spaced relation for frictional engagement with handles of varying diameters, and a means is employed for securing the clamping members in adjusted position so as to maintain the clamping arms in the desired spaced relation therebetween, and said means consists of a headed bolt or screw 15 which extends through the opening it, as well as through a slot 7 or 8, and which carries on its inner end a securing nut 16. Mounted on the bolt 15 and interposed be tween the nut16 and the rear face of the intermediate portion 1, is a washer element 17, and mounted on the bolt 15 and interposed between the head 18 thereof and the outer face of the base 9 is a washer element 19. The slots 7 or 8, in connection with a bolt 15, provide for the adjustment of a clamping member, as well as for providing for the fixedly securing of the clamping member in its adjusted position.

i In Figure 1 of the drawings, a broom. is shown in dotted lines, as indicated at 120, and with the handle thereof frictionally engaged by the clamping arms 12, whereby the broom is temporarily held suspended or removably connected with the holder.

Although the preferred embodiment of the holder in accordance with this invention, is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction. can be had which will fall within the light of the invention as claimed.

A holder for the purpose set forth com-- prising a body member consisting of a Sub stantially rectangular intermediate portion and a pair of angle-shaped end portions, said end portions being oppositely disposed with respect to each other and each extend-- ing inwardly from one terminus of said intermediate portion, a pair of oppositely disposed clamping members arranged against the outer face of said intermediate portion and each including a forwardly projecting clamping arm, said clamping arms being curvilinear in contour and oppositely disposed with respect to each other and capable of being shifted towards and away from each other, and means to provide for the adjusting of said clamping members to position said clamping arms and further for fixedly securing said clamping members in adjusted position, said means connected with and extending through said clamping members and intermediate portion.
