Description
'J.,"cus1 POCKET PROTECTOR FOR CHECKS AND THE LIKE Filed May 1. 1923 lilill A TTORNE Y Patented July 8, 1924.
JOAQUIN CUSI, OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA.
- POCKET PROTECTOR FOR CHECKS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 1, 1923. Serial No. 635,834.
' To all whom it may concern Luipacha Street, Buenos Aires,'Republic of Argentina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket Protectors for Checks. and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pocket protector for checks, drafts, and like d0cuments, its main, object'being'to providean apparatus of a very simple construction, which is of a very low cost and reduced size,
which can be carried in the pocket and by means of which checks and like documents may be provided with perforated control characters or signs, such as numerals and the like so as to avoid any alteration of the same.
. consists in providing an apparatus of the above nature with means which allow a regulation as to the general and relative position of the controlling characters or signs. 7 y v The invention has other objects in view which will appear hereafter and which are clearly. set forth in the appended claiming clauses.
In order that my, present invention may be clearly understood and easily carried into practice a preferred embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings. However, it must be clearly un derstood that the scope of the invention is in no way limited to the specific form illustrated and described and that many formal and constructionaT changes may be intro duced without. departing from the scope of my said invention, which is clearly set forth in the appended claiming clauses.
In the said drawings, a
Figure 1 is a partly sectional side elevation ofa device constructed according to my present invention Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Figure 1 which shows a detail of one .of the perforating elements and of the pushbutton.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the apparatus in operative position, said apparatus being provided with a suitable form of guiding means for the support and movement of the document to beprotected and Fig. 4 is a like view which shows the de- Another object of my present invention Similar characters of reference denote same or like parts throughout the said drawings.
In the embodiment shown, the main body of the apparatus which is of an elongated rectangular form, consists of three superposed parts in its whole length; an upper part 1 which forms a cover, an intermediate part in the form of a box as shown at 2, which contains the perforating devices and a lower part 3 soldered at one end to the bottom of the box 2 withan intermediate space 5 through which the document to be perforated may slide.
The cover 1 has a series of orifices 6 of a circular or other convenient shape which are conveniently disposed at the same distances apart and on the whole length of the cover so as to permitthe action as hereinafter explained of the perforating devices within the box 2, said devices being capable of independentoperation one from the other. Within the box 2 and corresponding with the said orifices 6 there are a number of housings 7 open at their upper and lower ends, and having at the former an inwardly turned flange 8. Said housings are fixed by their bottom edges to the bottom of the box 2. Within each housing is a metallic disc or the like 9 which on its lower face carries a number of thin bars 'or needles 10 suitably disposed so as to form a number, letter or other suitable character or sign. A coil spring 11 is placed within the housing around the said needles and presses the disc 9 against the flange 8, as will be seen from Figures 1 and 2. The bottom of the box 2 and the part 3 of the main body of the apparatus are provided with series of small orifices which exactly correspond as to position and size to the bars or needles 10, so that by pressing on the discs 9 the bars or needles 10 pass through the orifices 12 of both the said elements. It is obvious from the foregoing that when introducing a piece of paper or any other perforatable material in the free space 5 and positioning it suitably under one of the discs 9, on exerting pressure on the said disc the paper or other object will be perforated and indelibly marked with the sign, number or letter corresponding to the said disc. On their outer faces the discs 9 may be provided with a suitable indication of the corresponding sign.
The pressure on the discs 9 against the action of the springs 11 which tend to push them against the upper flange 8 of the housings 7 may be exerted either by a push button or the like fixed to each of them or pref-- erably by means of a common push button slidably mounted on the apparatus, as shown in the drawings. In the embodiment shown the body 1 carries along its side a protruding guide 13 on which a correspond ngly shaped portion of a support 14 may slide. Said support carries a box 15 on which the actuating button is fixed. Said button consists of two oppositely inverted thimblesor caps 16 and 17 with outwardly turned edges which are secured between the inwardly turned edges of the box 15. Both thimbles 16 and 17 are separated by means of a spring 18 which tends to keep them apart and allows a double movement so as to permit the lower thimble 17 to be raised during the sliding movements of the button along the device and said lower thimble 17 to be pressed downwards when after pressing the spring 18, the upper thimble 1 6 rests on the edge of the lower thimble. The play of the lower thimble 17 within the case 15 determines the run of the needles or bars 10. It
is obvious that on sliding the button 16 and its box 15 until it corresponds with the selected disc 9. and bringing the document to a corresponding position, on'pushing down the button. 16 the perforation of the docu- 7 a longitudinal slot 21; said. slot being pro-' ment is obtained and on repeating said operation groups of numbers or other suitable signs will be obtained which allow a perfect identification of the said document.
As the placing by hand of thedocument in the free space 5 and the successive move? ments of the same therein in order-to pro? duce the series of perforated controlling indications may give rise 'to many irregularities of distance and alignment, many different guiding and supporting devicesmay be used in combination withmy present apparatus. It must be however clearly under stood that the invention is not limited to any specific guiding means, those illustrated be. ing given only as anexample of execution.
)In the embodiment shown in Figure 3 the guiding device consists of a metallic plate of an elongated rectangular shape 20 having vided with a series of. equidistant; divisions 23 which correspond to thedistauce between the signs. Said plate is partially bent over and has a number of tongues 22 so as to tightly hold the document or other paperas shown in the drawings. The plate is inserted in a guide 19 formed in the support 14 of the push button 16 so that on sliding said button on the guide 13 in order to bring it to the desired position, said button may carry with it the guide 20andthe document held thereby. The transverse sliding of'the piece 20 with respect to the guide 19 together upper part it carries an elongated plate 26,
having a spring leaf which passes through a recess in a lateral guiding member 24 formed in the support 14: of the button The: saidspring is designed to hold the gu de in position and to determine the marginal.
space to be left in each case. The casing carries a stub shaft 29 which has a toothed wheel 30 and a screw button 31 sojthat on having the document pressed in the box between the plate 28 and the said wheelpas shown in Figure at, by giving'the said wheel a rotary motion through a predetermined angle an exactly regulable advance of the document may be obtained for a regular spacing of the signs The advance from sign to sign along thedevicel is made as hereinbefore explained- I It is obvious that many formal and constructional changes may-be introduced without departing from the scope of present invention.
What I claim and desire to Secure Letters Patent is:
