MEMORANDUM DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, ROBERT J. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rich n1ond,.in the State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Memorandum Devices, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to memorandum devices, an object being to provide a. device which is especially adapted for use upon the steering post of an automobile.
Another Object of the invention is the provision of a'memorandum device in which the memorandum strip is wound upon roll ers mounted within a casing, a portion of the stri passing over the outer surface of the casing to provide a writing surface, novel means being provided for preventing the rotation of the rollers and for holding the said rollers and their actuating means associated.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for making a duplicate memorandum, so that a record may be made upon a strip wound within the casing and a memorandum made upon another strip separated from the first strip. This is especially useful as a sales receipt.
A further ob 'ect is the provision of a memorandum device of this character, which is neat and attractive in appearance and which is especially useful for traveling salesmen and others for the purpose of keeping a memorandum of their sales andfurnishing a receipt to the customer.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a view. in elevation of a memorandum device constructed in accordance with the present invention.

are formed with sockets 13, which include radially disposed notches 14, the said sock ets and notches being adapted to receive pins 15 and lugs 16, respectively, the latter projecting from the said pins. The pins 16 extend through the side of the casing and carry knurled finger-pieces 17, by means of which the pins are rotated and the latter, through their engagement with the rollers 11, rotate the rollers. The rollers 11 are provided with spaced flanges l8 and are adapted to receive between these flanges a memorandum strip 19'.
Each of the pins 15 has secured thereon a collar or disk 19 and bearing against this collar or disk are the opposite ends 20 of a flat spring 21. This spring is secured to the casing at a point intermediate its ends and the ends are bifurcated for engagement with the pins 15, so as to bear against the collars or disks 19 to yieldingly hold the pins in engagement with the rollers and to hold the said rollers against. accidental rotation.
Each end ofthe memorandum strip 19' is wound upon one of the rollers 11 and the said strip intermediate its ends is passed through spaced slots 22 provided in a cover This cover is hingedly secured to the casing as shown at 2 1, and the slots 22 are provided along one edge with inturned flanges 25, to form a rounded surface for to provide means for pressing the spring inwardly to disengage the lug 27 from the opening 26. The casing is provided at one end with a pair of spaced spring arms 30, which are adapted to receive between them a pencil, so that the latter will be within convenient position for use.
By passing the memorandum strip 19 through the slots 22 over the outer surface of the cover, a flat writing surface is provided. This surface is adapted to be normally covered by means of a protecting plate 31, which is provided at one end with spaced cars 32 which are pivotally secured to the cover, as indicated at 33. The opposite end of this plate is formed with an outwardly curved portion 34 to provide convenient means for raising the protecting plate. Each side edge of the protecting plate 31 is formed with a flange 35, from which projects :1 lug 36. These lugs are formed with sockets 37, which are adapted to be sprung into engagement with projections 38 extending from each side of the cover 23. These projections may be in the form of spring actuated lugs, or, they may be formed by punching the side edges of the cover outward to form bosses as illustrated.
Extending from one side of the casing 10 is a clamp 39, the latter being designed to embrace the steering post and to be removably secured thereon by means of a clamping screw 40.
The invention is susceptible of various modifications and changes, one of which is illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. In these figures, one of the rollers 11 is formed with a ratchet wheel 41, which is made by providing teeth around the periphery of one of the flanges 18. This wheel 41 is designed to be engaged by a spring dog 42 carried by the casing 10 and prevents retrograde movement of the roller. In this form of invention there is provided duplicate memorandum strips, a strip 43 passing over the strip 19'. This strip 43 is wound upon one of the rollers with the strip 19 and extends through V the openings or slots 22 in the cover 23, and
has one of its ends passed through a slot 44 formed with outwardly extending flanges 45. This provides convenient means for severing the portion of the strip 43, the purpose being to provide a duplicate memorandum, one of which may be separated from the device. This duplicate memorandu'm may be made by having the strip 43 provided "upon its undersur-iace with a car- 'bon coating, or a separate carbon sheet 46 may be provided as illustrated in Figs. 6, 7
and 8. Whemusing duplicbte memorandum strips, thedevice is provided with rollers 47,
through which the strip 43 passes, one of said rollers contacting with a roller 48, which in turn engages the periphery of the flanges 18 ofone of the memorandum strip receiving rollers 11. By this means, a rotation of the rollers 11 will move both memorandum strips 19 and 43, a portion of the latter being projected through the slot 44 for its removal.
One means for retaining'a separate carbon sheet between the memorandum strips 19 and 43, is illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. This consists in providing clamping rods or wires 49 so as to engage the edges of the carbon sheet. These rods or wires 49 are pivotally secured at one end to the casing cover as shown at 50 and their opposite ends are formed into a spring catch 51, for engagement in openings 52 provided in the cover. If desired, these rods or wires 49 may be provided with spurs 53, which engage the carbon sheet and extend within openings 54 formed in the cover.
In Fig. 9 there is illustrated a modified form of carbon sheet retaining means. In this form, the rods 49 are received within depressions 55 provided in the casing cover and the edges of the carbon sheet 46 are c amped within these depressions.
The invention is susceptible of various other changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is, therefore, reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A memorandum device comprising a casing, a pair of spaced rollers mounted therein for receiving a memorandum strip, a cover hingedly secured to said casing and having spaced slots therein for the passage of the memorandum strips, a protector plate pivotally secured to the cover and adapted to be positioned over the memorandum strip and yieldable means for holding the rollers against rotation.
2. A memorandum device comprising a casing, a pair of spaced rollers mounted therein for receiving a memorandum strip, a cover hingedly secured to said casing and having spaced slots therein for the passage of the memorandum strips, a protector plate pivotally secured to said cover and adapted to be positioned over the memorandum strip, roller actuating means located upon the outside of the casing and detachably connected to the rollers and yieldable means located with-in the casing for holding the roller actuating means in engagement with said rolla cover hingedly secured .to said casing and having spaced slots therein for the passage of the memorandum strip, a protector plate pivotally secured to said cover and adapted roller actuatin means located upon the outside of the casing and detachably connected to the rollers, a spring secured to one wall of the casing and having its ends positioned for holding the roller and actuating means in engagement with said rollers and preventing accidental rotation of the latter.
4. A memorandum device comprising a casing, a air of spaced rollers remo'vably mounted t erein for receiving a memorandum strip, a cover hingedly secured to said casing and having spaced slots therein for the passage of the memorandum strip, roller actuating means extending through the easing and having detachable connection with said rollers, a collar carried by the roller actuating means for contact with the rollers and a spring contacting with said roller to hold the roller and roller actuating means in engagement and to prevent accidental rotation of the rollers.
5. A memorandum device comprising a casing having a slot therein, a pair of spaced rollers mounted in said casing for receiving a memorandum strip, a cover hingedly secured to. said casing and having slots therein for the passage of duplicate memorandum strips, one of which passes through the slot in the casing, and rollers engageable with one of said memorandum strips and actuated by one of the strip receiving rollers to feed the duplicate memorandum strips through said slot, and yieldable means for holding the rollers against rotation.
6. A memorandum device comprising a casing having a slot therein, a pair of spaced rollers mounted in said casing for receiving memorandum strips, a cover hingedly se- 'cured to said casing and having spaced slots therem for the passage or the memorandum strips, a carbon sheet positioned between said memoramlum strips and extending beyond the side edges of the same, a clamping rod engageable with each end of the carbon sheet and having one end pivotally secured to the casing, means carried by the opposite free end of the clamping rod for detachable engagement in openings formed in the easing and yieldable means for holding the rollers against rotation.
