i This invention relates to improvements in ladies" pocket-books or the l'1ke, 1noreparticularly to an extended gusset for ladies pocket-books, handbags, vanity cases, etc, and it is the pri11cipal'ob]ect' of the ln vention to provide a ladies pocket-book or handbag or the like with. an extended" gusset which will positively and" 'efhc ently prevent the accidental dropping. out. of articles contained therein either in the closedfor 1n the open position of the hand-bag etc.
Another objectof the invention is the pro vision of a simple, novel and improved means to provide ladies hand-bags etc. with a gusset adapted-to befoldediwithin the handbag to effectively prevent loss of articles "and to allow a ready access to the interior of p the hand-bag.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an extended gusset for ladies pocket-books, hand-bags or the like attached to the side faces thereof adapted to fold v against the front or rear" wall' of the con tainer. V I
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an extended gusset for ladies hand-bags or the like adapted to be held in close relation to the front and rear walls thereof and to be folded alongpre determined lines. p
It is furthermore an object of the invention to provide an extended gusset for ladies pocket-books, hand-bags or the like having its upper flaps'connect'ed and allowing the attachment of a purse etc. at its sides.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more fully:
known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically pointed out or defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanyin drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ladys pocketbook or hand-bag equipped with extended 'gussets constructed according-to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevationof the ladys hand-bag constructed according to a modified form of my invention.
Fig. 3 is an end View. of another modification of the'invention, particularly of the stitching. of the gusset. V Figure is a still further modification.
attached bya scam I? to the inner faceof the rear wall 11, and allow a lateral unfolding of the gusset from saidrear wall.
i The opposite edge of'the gus'sets,.the inner one, is attached for part of its lengthby a seam 18 to the inner wall of. the front. wall 12' over the entire width thereof allowing a folding of the gussets along a fold l9 durlng the'closing' of the hand-bag.
The oppositely-disposed inner edges of e the 'gussets' are disposed parallel to each other as at 20 and 21, while their upper ends are curved as at 22 and 23 respectively to "their point of attachment with the rear wall 11, leaving along said rear wall a flange 24 the opening of the bag.
In the modified form illustrated in Figure 2 thegussets 25, 26 are similarly constructed as described with respect to the preferred form, with exception of their formation with outer side flaps 27, 28 adapted to be secured to the rear wall llby means of snap buttons 29, and similar snap buttons 30 secure the folded lower end of the gussets to the hand-bag. i
A strap 31 secured'at one end to gusset 26 intermediate its ends is adapted to be attached to the opposite gusset 25 by means of a snap button 32 orthe like. The pocket formed by the front wall and the rear wall may be adapted to receive and hold a pocketbook33 attached therein in any suitable manner, and any number of pockets may be formed between the lining or stifi enings in the hand-bag and the outer and inner walls thereof, as indicated at 34, 35. e
In the modifications of the gussets illus trated in Figures 3, 4 and 5, in end views, the gussets 36, 87'and 38 respectively are formed with or attached to the rear walls 39, 40, .41 of the hand-bag in the above described manner, only they are provided with varying kinds of seams allowing a folding along which the gussets are unfolded upon of the gussets along the same. The gusset 36 has a central horizontally disposed seam 42, and an obliquely disposed fold l-S, while the gusset 37 has an angular, obliquely disposed seam 44: formed therewith allowing a folding of the gusset between front and rear wall of the handbag. V
A purse 45 having a closing flap l6 adapted to be closed by a snap button t? may be attached to the gusset 38 in any well known manner.
It will be understood that the gussets formed and attached as shown and described will allow a convenient opening of the pocket book or hand-bag without danger of loosing articles contained therein which is frequently experienced by persons using the hand-bags now on the market.
, While we have shown and described the preferred forms of our invention as an example of the practical embodiment thereof, it will be understood, that such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims may be made in the construction and arrangement of the device without departure from the spirit or" the invention.
Having thus described our invention,
what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination, in a ladys pocketbook of the class described, of a pair of extended gussets, means for detachably fastening said gussets to a pocket-book, and a strap fixed at one end to one of said gussets, and provided with means at its other end to detacnably hold the other of said gussets, whereby the strap may hold said pair of gussets as a unit, if desired to be removed from the pocket-book and stored for a period of time.
2. A unitary pair of extended detachable gussets for ladies handbags, con'iprising a pair of extension gussets, snap fasteners mounted along the gusset edges for detachably fastening to a hand bag, and a strap sewed at one end to one of said gussets, and provided with a snap fastener at its other end to detachably hold the other of said gussets.
In testimony whereof we have allixed our signatures.
