Description

B; K. VERBR'YCK & T.NEWBERRY.
Car Axle-Box.
N0. 159,622 Patented Feb. 9,1875.
UNITED STATES BENJAMIN K. VERBRYOK AND THOMAS NEWBERRY, OF CHICAGO, ILL.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,622, dated February 9, 187.); application tiled January 18, 1875.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN K. VER- BnYcK and THoMAs NEWBERRY, ot' Chicago,
in the county of Cook and State of lllinois,.
have invented a new and Improved Oar-Axle Box, of which the followin g is a specilication:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a front view, of a car-axle box with our improved cover or lid fastening latch. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the eccentric latch detached, and Fig. 4 an end View ofthe cover or lid, with the groove and cam for the attaching of the latch-piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of our invention is to improve the axle-boxes of railway-cars in such a inanner that the covers or lids are locked or fastened in an absolutely secure manner without the use of set-screws, sprin gs, or other devices which are liable to get lost or out of order.
Our invention consists of a cover or lid which is hinged to one side of the axle-box, and provided at the other side with a groove and cam, into which a pivoted latclrpiece with eccentric cam is swung for 1ocking rigidly the cover.
1n the drawing, A represents a car-axle box of any ofthe usual constructions; B, the cover or iid, which is hinged to 011e side and fitted to close tightly over the opening of the box. 'lhe free side of cover B is about centrally provided with a groove or recess, a., concentric to the pivot of the lookin g latch-piece B at the side of the axle-box. The groove a encircles a flat segmental cam-piece, b, which, at its lower corner, is slightly out oit or inclined., as indicated in Fig. 4, for the purpose of passing along the'slightly-curved cam part d of the latch B', when the same is carried too far back in open position, so as to bring it thereby forward by the pressure of the lid in closing, and set it into exact position for being turned down. The latch-piece B has a crank or lever handle, and is recessed at its lower or rear sidein such a manner that a part ot its circumference is open for the entrance of the cam b of the lid, while an eccentrically-tapering cam, e, is formed along the circumference and terminated in the curved radial cam part d. rlhe end of the eccentric cam part e enters the groove a ofthe lid on being swung down, and slides along the cam-piece of' the same till the eccentricity of the cani binds gradually tighter and tighter on the cam of the lid, and locks the saine finally rigidly to the box without a possibility of its playing loose until thrown up again for opening the lid in reiilling the oil-box. The lidfttstening is extremely simple, being opened and closed with the greatest facility, and is thereby less liable to get out of order than the common set-screw, spring, or other locking devices hitherto emplo'ved.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. rlhe combination of hinged lid B, having side groove a, and cam b, axle-box and pivoted latch-piece B', having on its recessed lower side a snail-cam tor locking the lid, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. 'lhe segment cam-piece b of the lid, having its lower corner obliquely cut away, in combination with the radial cam end d of the latch, for causing the same to lock on closing the lid, substantially as set forth.
BENJAMIN 'KERRY VERBRYGK. THOMAS NEWBERRY.
