IGNATZ HERZOG AND RICHARD KOCH, OF YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIDS FR RETORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,671, dated February 9, 1875; application filed Y october 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IGNATZ HERZOG and RICHARD KOCH, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and. useful Improvement in Closing the Mouths of Retorts, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a front view when the lid is closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view when the .lid is lowered ready to be swung open. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.

This invention relates to an improvement on our patent for closing the mouths of retorts, which is numbered 148,455, and dated March 10, 1874.
Our present improvement consists in combining with the lid of a retort a rock-shaft provided with lifting-toes, and a hinged lever, which is connected to said lid by means of a pin that slides in the end of said lever, in such a nia-nner that when the rock-shaft carrying the lifting-toes is turned in one direction the lid is free to sink down on said gui'le, and when the lid is brought up to the mouth of lthe retort and the rock-shaft carrying the lifting-toes is turned in the opposite direction, the lid is raised and its edge is caused to engage with a V-shaped groove formed on a frame, which is secured to the mouth of the retort, and at the same time said lid is forced up tight against the outer surface of the retort. On the rock-shaft are also mounted cams, which 'serve to depress the lid, so as to disengage it from the V-shaped groove in the frame.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a retort, on the mouth of which is secured a frame or rim, B, the inner edge of which forms a V-shaped groove, a, Fig. 3. C is the lid of the retort, the edge of which is also V-shaped, so that it can be made to engage with the groove a. It must be remarked, however, by referring to Fig. 3, that the bevel of the groove a is different from that of the edge of the lid, so that when said edge is forced into the groove the lid is pressed up against the outer surface of the retort or against the face of the frame B. On the lid C, near its bottom edge, is mounted a rock-shaft, E, which has its bearings in boxes f, and which is' turned by a lever, g. On this rock-shaft are secured toes, h, and if the lid is brought to the position shown in. Fig. 2, and the rock-shaft E is turned in the proper direction, said toes bear upon arms Z, which'project from the bottom edge of the retort, and thereby the lid is forced upward and inward, so that its edge catches in the V-shaped groove a, while its inner surface is pressed up tight against the face of the retort or of the frame B. As the lid is raised the pin c slides in the lever D.
On the rock-shaft E are secured cams i z', and if the lid is closed, as shown in Figs. l and 3, and the rock-shaft is .turned in the direction' of the arrow marked near it in Fig. 3, said cams bear against lugsjj, which project from the frame B. 1f the lid binds or sticks in the groove a, or if it should adhere to the retort, the cams i t' serve to release it, and the operation of opening the retort is facilitated.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rock-shaft E, provided with liftingtoes 7L, in combination with the lid C of a retort, and with the groove a and arms Zon the said retort, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the swinging lever D, sliding pin c, lid C, retort A, grooved frame B, rock-shaft E, lifting-toes lt, and arms Z, all constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination ofthe rock-shaft E and cams i z' with the lid C, groove a, and lugsjj, substantially as set forth.
