' CASKET.
Application filed June 2?, 1924. Serial No. 722,690.
This invention relates to burial caskets and consi of the novel features herein shown. described and claimed.
An object is to make a two piece metal burial cas zet adapted to be cheaply made and easily sealed.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the dra rings and specification.
The drawings illustrate the construction of a burial casket embodyin the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the casket.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of one of the clamps for holding the parts together.
The details of construction shown in the drawings are as follows:
The lower part 1 of the casket has a finished level upwardly projecting seat or rim 2 all the way around. The upper part 3 of the casket has a channel shaped recess 4 all the way around with a finished seat 5 at the bottom of the channel, and a gasket 6 of rubber, cork, or other suitable material is placed upon the seat 2 to be. engaged and compressed by the seat 5 so as to make a tight joint between the parts 1 and 3. The part 3 is connected to the part 1 at one side by hinges 7. Hooks 8 project downwarc ly from the part 3 at the opposite side from the hinges 7. Attaching plates 9 are secured to the part 1 in the vertical planes of the hooks 8. Levers 10 are pivotally connected to cars 11 projecting; outwardly from the plates 9 by pins 12 and hooks 13 are connected to the levers 1.0 by pivots 1d, and when the levers 10 are swung upwardly the hooks lg interlock with the hooks 8, and when the levers 10 are swung downwardly the pivots 14 pass inwardly beyond the pivots 12 and lock.
A glass plate 15 is securely sealed in an opening 16 to the top of the part 3 so that the interior of the casket may be viewed through the plate 15. A, cover 17 is removably mounted upon the part 3 to cover the glass 15 and make a finishedappearance. The parts 1, 8 and 17 are formed of metal.
The lower part of the casket is formed with a double. walled hollow rim 20 having an outer told 21 of the walls 22, which is reterably welded along the line thereby "orining a still and rigid seat, 2, which is llaton its upper surface 2 1 and sloped outwardly therefrom to the told 21.
The intermediate part 3 is constructed of a substantially flat surfaced inner wall 26 and a curved outer wall 23 forming a rigid construction for the seat 5 by placing this bore inside and outside. The upper part of the wall 53'? has a groove 28 in which extends the flange 29 secured to the double walled cover 17?, the outer wall 30 preterably being curved and the inner wall 31 being; The plate of glass15 rests on the shoulders and is tightly secured thereon by a head 33.
Thus I. have produced a casket constructed of metal and consis 11g of two main parts complementary seats, gaskets upon 2s, and means for securing the parts other to compress the gaskets and make I joints.
Various changes may be made without departing: from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
1 claim: 7
A casket comprising; in combination a lower part having a hollow double walled rim formed by bending}; the upper part of the wall of the casket thereover, forming a substantially liat seat at the rim, an upper section of the casket having a double wall with a channel-shaped recess at its lower edge, a gasket therein between the seat and the recess, a groove at the upper part of the upper section, a cover having a depending flange engaging the gro ve and means to clamp the lower and the upper section together. f
In testimony whereof I name to this specification.
EDMUND J GREIVE.
