Description

. T J. w. HALL cow 'TAIL HOLDER Filed Sept. 9, 1925 Patented June 22, 1926.
UNITED STATES JAMES W. HALL, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
COW-TAIL HOLDER.
Application filed September 9, 1925. Serial No. 55,271.
This invention relates to an improved article of manufacture classified in the art as a cow tail holder.
It has reference to a simple and inexpensive device which is adapted to be clamped to a portion of one of the hind legs of an animal, the same being constructed to surround the free end portion of the tail, whereby to hold the tail against movement, especially when the cow is being milked.
My primary aim is to generally improve upon devices of this class by providing one of comparative simplicity and durability which is such in construction as to render it practical, easy. of application, not injurious to the animal and inexpensive to both the manufacturer and the user.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the accompanying drawings forming apart of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is aperspective view .of a portion of a cow showing the manner in which the device is used.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device removed. I
The device comprises, in the main, a leg gripping or encircling member indicated generally by the reference character 1. This is formed from a band of resilient material which is bent between its ends at 2 to pro vide a socket, the two plies of metal being bent to form a somewhat circular clamp.
The free end portion 3 of the inner ply has its extremity bent as at 4 to provide another socket, while the free end portion 5 .of the outer ply has its free end portion bent upon itself as indicated at 6 to form a shoulder. It will be noted that the two free end portions are directed away fromeach other to dispose them in somewhat diverging relation and to allow the inner ply to be spread outwardly. Used in association with the device are two handles 7 having a U- shaped end portion .8. The downturned part of these portions 8 are adapted for removable reception in the sockets 2 and 4. Also the downturned portion of one-of the U-shaped parts is intended to engage behind the shoulder 6. This arranges the handles in outwardly diverging spaced relation to permit them to be grasped and moved together for spreading the ends of the clamp apart for application and removal.
In practice the device is clamped upon the portion of the legas indicated in Fig. 1, with the clamp surrounding the free end portion of the tail to holdit against swing- 1ng.
It is believed that by considering the description in connection with the drawings, a clear comprehension of the construction and advantages derived therefrom will become evident. Therefore a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Minor changes coming within the scope of the invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A cow tail holder comprising a resilient clamp formed from a single band of resilient metal bent between its ends to provide overlapping-plies, the intermediate bend being formed to provide a socket. and the free end portions of the plies being of a rigid diverging relation away from each other, the extremity of one ply being bent to provide a complemental socket, and the extremity of the other ply being bent to provide a shoulder, and a pair of handles having U-shaped portions for detachable association with the sockets and shoulder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
, JAMES W. HALL.
