Description

A. FLOWERS BROOM HANDLE June 1 1926.
Filed August 5, 1925 31a/vanto@ ALPHoNso Fiom/ERS alito: um? v patented June .1, 1926.
UNITE STATES PATENT QFMCE..
ALPHONSO FLOVJERS, OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
BROOM Application filed August My invention relates to improvements in broom handles and has for its object to provide a pair of hand grips mounted on the handle, so that one of the grips is slidable with respect to the other, to permit longitudinal movement of the hand when manipulating the broom whereby the operation is made less tedious.
A further object of the invention is to provide cushioned hand grips mounted on the handle, so that when grasped they will be secured against rotary movement, enabling the handle to be firmly grasped.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned charactor which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and er'licient in use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1, is a front elevation of a broom equipped with my improved handle, and,
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary view of the handle, partly in section.
ln the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration, l have shown a preferred enibodiment et my invention, the numeral 5, denotes a conyentioiial type of broom having the usual handle (5 connected thereto by the ferrule T.
Refering more particularly to my invention, it will be seen that the upper end of the handle 6 is squared, as at 8, to .receive the cushioned cap 9, secured in place by the nail 10 driven through the top of the cap into the end of the handle, The cap is formed from a double layer of durable cloth 11 and a suitable padding 12, .such as felt or cotton. i. placed between the layers at the sides, forming a cushioned grip. A tubular cushioned grip 18 is slidablyy mounted on the handle, approximately intermediate its length, and the portion of the handle surrounded by the grip is squared, as at 14C. The grip 13 is likewise formed from a double layer of cloth 15 and filled with a suitable padding 16. The cap 9 is connected With the slidable grip 13 by the elastic band 18 HANDLE.
e, 1925. serial No. 47,787.
which has its respective ends connected with the cap and grip, as at 18 and 1,9, and which normally retains the grip 13 in proper position upon the handle, yet permitting free longitudinal movement thereof when the broom is in use.
ln use, the cap 9 is grasped in one hand and the grip 13 graspedwith the other and in manipulating' the broom handle it will be seen that the grip 13 will slide up and down the handle. thus making the task of sweeping less tedious and easier on the hands. The elastic band functions to return the grip to its normal position after each downward movement and upward movement of the grip is limited by the cap 9. It will be seen that by squaring the handle where the grips are mount d the handle can be firmly gripped and turning of the grips will be prevented.
A loop 20 is attached to the top of the cap 9 and serves as a means for hanging` the broom from a suitable support when not in use.
lt is understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken :is a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be made 'ithout departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope oi" the subjoined claims,
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. rthe combination with a broom handle` of a cushioned grip mounted over the end of said handle and tixedly secured thereto, a second cushioned grip freely slidably mounted on said handle and an elastic band connecting said grips together, said elastic band normally retaining said slidable grip at a predetermined point.
2. T he combination with a broom handle, of a cushioned grip mounted over `he end of said handle and line-diy secured thereto, a second cushioned grip freel),r slidably mounted on said handle and an elastic band connecting said grips together normally retaining said slidable grip at a predeternined point, said. handle being squared where surrounded by said grips.
In testimony whereof l aiiix my signature.
ALPHONSO FLOWERS.
