Application filed April 26,
T 0 all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY J. SOMMER and JACOB Enron, citizens or" the United States, residing at Hollidaysburg, in the. county of Blair and State oi Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lnr provements in lVlop-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mop heads and has as its primary object to provide a head of simple and inexpensive construction in which may be readily clamped a mop or mop cloth of any ordinary thickness.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the head that the retaining member for the mop may be quickly released and swung clear of the mop for the purpose of removing the mop from the head and may equally as readily be swung into engagement with a mop to be secured in place upon the head, both operations being performed without the necessity of resorting to the use of tools of any sort.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the mop head;
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the mop stick or handle which is provided at its lower end with the usual ferrule 2 and which has permanently secured thereto a yoke 3 the arms of which are-secured at their lower ends to the fixed member of the mop head. This member is indicated in general by the numeral 4 and the same preferably comprises an elongated plate which is transversely curved throughout its length substantially to semi-circular form as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, the concave side of the head being presented downwardly. At one end the member a is formed with an opening 5 in which is pivotally engaged a closed eye 6 formed at one end of the clamping member of the head which member is indicated by the numeral 7; This member is preferably in the form of a stout wire or small rod provided as stated at one end with the eye 6 and it is preferable that adjacent the point of juncture of the eye with the body of the member 7 the said Specification of Letters Patent.

member be given an upward curve as indicated by-the numeral 8 so that when the member is in the locking or clamping position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings there will be sufficient space between this end of the body of the member and the corresponding end of the member 4 to accommodate the mop or mop cloth which is indicated by the numeral 9.
A stem 10 is pivoted as at 11 at the other or free end of the clamping member 7 and this stem is threaded throughout the greater portion or" its length as indicated by the numeral 12 and is designed to be swung upon its pivot in the clamping position of the member 7, so as to project upwardly through a notch 13 which is formed in that end of the member l opposite the end in which the opening 5 is formed. A clamping nut 14: is threaded onto the stem 12 and is provided with a wing 15 which may be grasped for the purpose of rotating it upon the stem. the nut 14 being designed to bear against the upper side of the notched end.
of the member 4 in the manner clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.-
From the fore oing description of the in- .vention it will be understood that the mop 9 is clamped in the head 6 engaging the intermediate portion of the said mop in the channeled under side of the member 4 and then swinging the clamping member 7 to clamping position as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the stem 10 being swung to position projecting through the notch 13, and the clamping nut 1% being turned down upon the stem until the mop has beensufiiciently firmly clamped by the member 7 and between this member and the said member l. When it is desired to remove the mop it is only necessary to loosen the nut 14 and disengage the stem 10 from the notch 13 whereupon the clamping memher 7 may be swung downwardly. for the purpose stated. 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A mop head comprisinga fixed clamping member, a movable clamping member pivoted at one end to one end of the first mentioned member the first mentioned member being formed at its other end with a notch, a stem pivotally connected with the free end of the movable clamping member and engageable in the notch, and a binding iio 10 pivotally engaged through the opening in the first mentioned member. a stem pivotally connected with the free end of the movable clamping member and engageabie in the said notch, and a binding nut threaded onto the said stem. I
In testimony whereof We afiix our signatures.
HENRY J. SOMMER. [n s] JACOB REIGH.
