GEORGE B. CANADA, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSGNGR OF SNE-HALF TO JAMES B. HOLLEY, 0F '.[rLElv'PI-S, TENNESSEE.
Application filed September ll, 1924.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combs, and particularly to combs adapted for use by barbers.
One object ot' the invention is to provide a comb of such construction that the danger of cutting` oli' too much hair is reduced to a minimum.
Ano-ther object is to provide a comb oit this character which obviates the usua cramping' twist of the wrist of the operator.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following` description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing'.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation ot a comb made in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same.
Referring particularly to the accompanying` drawing, 10 represents the baclr or the comb, and 11 and 12 the coarse and teeth, respectively, the entire comb structure being longitudinally tapered in the direction of the tine teeth, as clearly seen in the elevation, Figure 1.
Upon reference to the end view, Figure 2, it will be seen that the body7 ot tine teeth are inclined on one direction, out ot the plane ot the back, while the body ot' coarse teeth are inclined in the opposite direction, out of the plane orp the back. ln the manufacture o1l the comb the opposite end portions ot the back ot the comb are 'iven twists in the opposite directions7 whereby the two sets off teeth will extend obliquely with respect to each other, and to the longitudinal axis of the back. lt will also be noted, that the teeth of each set lies in the plane of the corresponding' portion of the back,y or that portion to which they are attached. 'This twist is clearly seen in the center of the baci; oi the comb, in Figure 1. rlhis provides a considerable space between the innermost ot the coarse and tine teeth, whereby to permit easy manipulation of the comb around the ears ot the sitter.
lVith the ordinary comb, wherein the teeth lie in the same plane as that of the back, it
Serial No. 737,115.
requires a twist of the wrist ot' the operator, when using; the comb in a hair cutting` operation, with the result that the wrist and hand become cramped. 1With the present comb the incline of the body 'oit teeth perpermits the natural position of the hand and wrist, while manipulating the comb. Furthermore., with the ordinary comb it is diiiicult to gage the amount of hair which shall project from the teeth of the comb, and which is to be cut off. lWith the present comb, the operator holds the same in the ordinary and natural position, which disposes the teeth at such an angle to the surface of the head as to permit the proper amount ot hair to project through the. teeth. rlhus the operation of cutting is 'reduced to a simple and easy operation, and withoutdanger of the operator cutting` oli1 too much hair.
The comb illustrated in the present. drawing is especially adapted for right-handed barbers, when making a full haircut, and is adapted to be used in the left hand of a lert-handed barber for making a close cut. To provide for making a close cut, by a right-handed barber, the comb will be constructed with the teeth inclining in the opposite direction to that illustrated.
Furthermore, the use ot the comb, in mall.'- ing` al close cut, permits the barber to easily and neatly remove the marks lett by the clipper. Also, the comb permit-s easy access to the hair around the ears, and in the depressions in the neck.
lllhat is claimed is:
1. A comb having;` a series of teeth extending radially of the axis ot the back oiJ the comb in one direction, and a series of teeth extending; radially of the axis of the back of the comb and obliquely with respect to the lirst teeth, the innermost teeth, ot the two series divergging Vith relation to each other to provide a gap ior the sitters 2. A comb includinga back having two series of teeth, one series of teeth extending in a plane obliquely to that or' the other teeth and in the plane or the correspending,- portion of the back, the innermost teeth of the two series euvel-ging both longitudinally and transversely et the back of the comb to provide a gap for the stters ear.
3. A comb including a back which is twisted intermediate its ends so that the end portions lie in planes oblique to each other, each of Said back portions having a series olE teeth lying in the plane of said back p01'- tion, whereby one set el teeth lies in :1 plane oblique te that of the other set with u gap between the nnerlnost ol" the teeth el the sets for spanning the em.' of the stter.
