UNITED STATES 1,5823% PATENT OFFICE.
HUGE-I O. PUMPHREY, Oj LAMESA, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OFONE-THIRD T0 ANDREW M. CONKLIN AND ONE-THIRD TO HUGH L. DUKE, BOTH OF LAMESA, TEXAS.
DOOR-OPERATING STRUCTURE.
Application filed March 19, 1925. Serial No. 16,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH G. PUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamesa, in the county of Dawson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operating Structures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the acoonr panying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in door operating structures and has relation more particularly to a structure of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a freight car door, and it is an object of the invention to provide a structure of this kind comprising a member carried by the door and coacting with the wall of the car in a manner to effect the requisite movement of the door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of this general character comprising a bar having substantially universal connection with the door and coacting with the wall of the car in a manner to i1npart the desired movement to the door.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved door operating structure whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and othe W ise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Elie novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to t cscribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating a door operating structure constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the worl-:- ing bar being shown in its normal or in operative position;
Figure 2 is a view partly in horizontal section and partly in elevation illustrating a structure as shown in Figure 1, different positions of the working bar being indicated by broken lines;
Figure 3 is a View in perspective of the member carried by the door for holding the working bar;
Figure 4; is a fragmentary View in perspective of the member or plate secured to the wall of the car .and with which the working bar engages.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, V denotes the side wall of a freight car provided with the door opening G adapted to be closed in a well known manner by the outside sliding door D. At a desired point above the bottom of the door are attached the outstanding supporting members 1 spaced apart and aligned in a direction transversely of the door D, eaohof saidmembers bein herein disclosed as a staplehaving its eatremities disposed through the door D proper and having engaged therewith the holding nuts 2. I do not wish, however, to be understood as limiting myself to any particular means whereby the supporting members 1 may be maintained in desired applied position.
Disposed through and rotatably supported by the members 1 is an elongated rod 8 havng one end portion extending beyond the inner vertical edge of the door D, said extended portion terminating in a head a proyided therethrough with an elongated opening 5. The contact of the head f with the adjacent vertical edge of the door limits inward movement of the bar or rod 3 in one direction while the contact of the outstanding pins 6 carried by the bar 3 with the members 1 holds the bar against lengthwise movement in the opposite direction.
A working or pinch bar B adjacent one end thereof is cut away at opposite sides to provide reduced portion 7 which is disposed through the elongated opening or slot 5. said portion 7 being of a width less than the length of the opening or slot 5 so tnat the bar B may have requisite swinging movement to effect an opening or closing of the door D. Initially the head 4 maybe split to permit the proper application of the bar B, said head being afterwards welded or otherwise closed. However, it will be understood that the bar B may be assembled with respect to the head l in an manner which may be preferred.
Secured to the outer face of the wall W at the inner side of the opening 0 is a horizontally disposed elongated plate 8 held in desired position by the bolts 9 or the like. This plate 8 at points spaced lengthwise thereof is provided with the depressions or pockets 10 to receive the working end extremity ll of the bar B after the bar 3 has been retated in a direction to bring the bar B to substantially a horizontal position. Requisite horizontal swinging or rocking movement of the bar 13 with the working extremity 11 properly engaged within the depressions or pockets 10 will result in an effective opening or closing of the door D without defacing or otherwise injuring the door D or the wall W as now often occurs by the use alone of the conventional pinch bar.
The plate 8 is of a length equal to the full opening movement of the door D and the outer end portion of said plate 8 is provided with an outstanding lip or flange 12 with whichthe door D contacts to limit the ex.- tent ofopening movement of the door D.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a door operating structure constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combination with a Wall provide with an opening and a sliding door therefor,
Lesa res a member rotatably supported by the door and extending beyond an edge thereof, said extended portion of the member being provided with a slot therethrough, a bar having a reduced portion disposed through the slot whereby the bar is supported by the member, said slot being greater in length than the width of the reduced portion to permit the bar having swinging movement in a direction lengthwise of the member, and a second member provided with spaced pockets carried by the wall to one side of the opening with which an end portion of the bar is adapted to engage to facilitate movement of the door.
2 In combination with a wall provided with an opening and a sliding door therefor, a member rotatably supported by the door and extending beyond an edge thereof said extended portion of the member being provided with a slot therethrough, a bar having a reduced portion disposed through the slot whereby the bar issupported by the member, said slot being greater in length than the width of the reduced portion to permit the bar having swinging movement in a direction lengthwise of the member, and means carried by the wall to one side of he opening with which an. end portion of the bar is adapted to engage to facilitate movement of the door.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afli my signature.
HUGH C. PUMPHREY.
