Application filed December 14, 1925. SerialNo. 75,383.
for perforating statistical cards and more particularly to a punching means for identifying a card with a particular part such, for example, as the number designating a railroad car.
Some of the objects of the present invention are to provide an improved punching" mechanism for statistical cards; to provide means by which errors due to reading ofi numbers of parts or cars are eliminated; to provide means for accurately and positively taking the identifying numbe'r of a part or car; to provide a punching mechanism whereby manual copying of identification numbers of railroad cars and the subsequent punching thereof is done away with; to provide a punching device attached to each part or car and having a set up identifying the part or car to which it is attached; and to provide other improvements as will here inafter appear. I
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of a punching apparatus embodying one form of the pres- .ent invention, the cover iorthe same being removed; Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 re resents a section on line 3-3 ct; Fig. 2; an Fig. 4 re resents aportion of acard showing the eld for identifying the subject ot'the card by num leer.
Referring to the drawings, one form of the present invention consists of a base which is arranged to be mounted by any suitable fastenin device to a tired part with which it isuserf The base 10 supports a punch plate or dial-1 having registration perforations i2 and punch pin perforations 13, these last corresponding in arrangement to the predetermined number which isto be punched in the card it. 7
In order to properly brin the card 14 into registered relation with t e punch plate 11, a registration late is also supported by the base 10 an t arranged parallel to but spaced from the punch plate 11 in order to provide a card receiving passage 16, and it will be notedone end of this passage is open, as shown at 17, so that a card 14: can be inserted. The required i'egistering oi the cards is accomplished by registration perforations 18 in the card which are similarlyv arranged and of like number for all of the cards, so that when a card is properly located in the passage 16 the registration perforations 18 will be, in register'with the registration perforations 12 of the die 11 and like perforations 20 in the registration plate 15. The card 14 may then be held iir such position by dowel pins 21 carried by theinovable holder 22 which supports the punches 23 for perforating the card when the holder is moved towards the die 11. The punches 23 correspond in row a1: ange- 'ment with the number androw arrangement of the digits in the field of the card and are held rigidly clamped by a presser plate 24 held in place by fastening devices 25 onv gaging the holder 22.
For actuating the punches 23, the presser plate 24 and holder 22 are slidably mounted on guide pins 26 which are threaded into the base 10 and have springs 27 respectively encircling'the pins and compressed between the pin heads 28 and the 'presser plate 2a to act as yielding butters for the punch parts. The presser plate 24 isprovided with spaced cars 30 for connecting an operating lever 31 thereto by means of a pin 32. The lever 31 is pivoted at 33 to the base 10 and has a handle by which it can be manuall operated. lithe lever 31, where it exten s across the end of the unch mechanism, is provided with a ru her stri yieldable bufier which is arrange to engage a similar butler 36 mounted on the base 10, when the punch is operated, for the ,purpose ot'grippmg the card and closing the interior of the apparatus. A. strip of rubber 37 or looped from a wall 0 the cover casing 38 of the? apparatus to the strip and can follow the movement of the lever 31 and maintain the interior of the casing entirely closed, I
in the use of the punch of the present in vention it is setup with adie 11 perforated fyielding material is Y number which is to be punched in the card, while the movable punch mechanism'is set up with punchesto aline or register with the die perforations.
When a card is placed in the passage 16 its identification field has its digits properly registered respectively with the die 11 so that when the lever 33 is operated the punches will perforate the card in the requlred arrangement. As here shown the number of the car or part to which the punch is atforated with .the number of the car so that it then becomes an identifying card for that particular car and all data thereafter punched in that card will relate 't o that particular car.
It will now be apparent that a complete unitary card punching mechanism has been devised for identifying railroad cars or other mechanisms with a number punched in a card, and wherein mistakes heretofore common in the punching of cards is eliminated in so far as the identifying means is con- I 35' cerned.
clann:
1. Identification means for movable carrier, comprising a casing to be attached lj-faving' thus described my invention, I
through a wall of the casing, said wall bein formed to permit free movement of the handle without exposing the interior of ,the casing save for the card receiving opening. y p
2. A punching device comprising a base to be permanently attached to a car, a cover casing over said base and open at one end only, a card receiving die carried by said base within the casing and accessible only by cards inserted through the open end of the casing, a punch in vsaid casing and pivoted at one end therein for perforating a card in said die, an operating handle on said punch and extending through the open end'of the casing, said casing being formed at the open end to permit free movement of said operating handle, and a flexible closure at the open end of the casing between said punch and a wall of the casing whereby the interior of the casing is closed save for the card receiving opening.
