STONE PLANE.
Applicationled May 7, 1925. Serial No. 281,739.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, REAL FRENETTE, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Rosemount, Province of Quebec, "Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements lin Stone Planes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make `and use the same. n
The present invention pertains to a novel plane designed for use in stone cutting.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a pneumatic tool designed to displace the present method 0f cutting stone by hand with a cold chisel. The device is particularly useful in forming' the marginalplane borders of facing blocks and also for planing the entire face :of a block when desired.
The device comprises a sole having a mouth and a stock supporting a cutter which penetrates the mouth. The position of the cutter in the mouth may be regulatedy for example by means of a pair of nuts threaded onthe stem of the cutter. Appropriate attachments are carried by the sole for the purpose of supporting a pneumatic hammer and holding' it firmly in engagement with the stem of the cutter. mer on the stem moves the entire plane forwardly while the blade cuts the stone.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;
Figure 2 is a plan View;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the device with the cutter and follower removed;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section of the kmer is supported on the plate 15, the ring stock,- and Figure 6 is a perspective view of the cutter.
Reference to these views will now be made by means of like characters which are employed to designate parts throughout.
The device comprises a metallic sole 1 having parallel longitudinal ribs 2 on its lower face to form a. corrugated bottom. When the tool is placed in working position on a low angular The action of the hamstone, the chips and dust emanating from the stone pass through the spaces between the ribs. l
The stock of the plane consists of a holbody 3, formed integral with the sole and having a ypair of lateral flanges 4 at its rear side. The cutter or plane iron, shown in perspective in Figure 6, comprises a toothed blade 7, a'square shank 8, and a threaded stem 9. A transverse mouth 10 is cut through the sole for accommodating the blade 7. The shank 8 is received in a suitable opening 11 formed through the back of the stock, while the stem 10 is disposed exteriorly of the stock as shown in Figure 5. By means of a pair the stem, the penetration of the blade through the mouth 10 may be adjusted. Y
To the lateral flanges t at the back of the stock are kfixed pins 13 which extend upwardly and rearwardly with reference to the sole. To therear end of the'solek is attached a handle 14s-carrying a V-shaped plate 1'5 at its top., The handle has a bottom plate 16 received between a pair of longitudinal ribs 17 on the upper surface of the sole. Between the tracks, aI slot 18 -is'cutithrough the sole, and the handle maybe adjusted in various positions by means of screws 19 passed through the slot and into the bottom plate 16.
The V-shaped plate 15 is adapted to support a pneumatic hammer in such a position that the reciprocating plunger thereof will bear upon4 and strike against the stem 9. Over the plate is provided a follower for the hammer. This member consists of a ring 20 from which extend a pair of arms 21 lying parallel to the rods 13 and slidably mounted thereon. Nuts 22 are screwed to the upper ends of the rods 13, and springs 23 are disposed between the nuts and the lower `ends of the arms 21. When the ham- 20 engages the rear end of the hammer whereby the springs 23 hold the plunger of the hammer in firm engagement with the stem 9. A knob 24 is mounted at the forward end of the sole as the gripping means at this end.
In the operation of the device, the pneumatic hammer is held against the stem 9 by the spring follower, acts upon the blade 7, causing` it to cut the stone while the plane moves forwardly.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A stone plane comprising a sole having a mouth therein, a stock, a cutter mounted in said stock and passing through said mouth, a pair of inclined rods extending upwardly and rearwardly from said stock, a spring follower mounted on said rods, a plate supported by the sole and adapted to support a pneumatic hammer in alinement with said cutter, said follower being disposed over said plate.
2. A stone plane comprising a sole havinga mouth therein, a stock, a cutter mounted in said stock and passing through said mouth, a pair of inclined rods extending upwardly and rearwardly from said stock, a spring follower mounted on said rods, a plate supported by the sole and adapted to support a pneumatic hammer in alinement with said cutter, said follower being disposed over said plate, and means for adjusting said blade with reference to said mouth.
3. A stone plane comprising a sole having a mouth therein, a stock, a cutter mounted in said stock and passing through said mouth, means for supporting a pneumatic hammer in alinement with said cutter, said cutter having a threaded stem, and nuts mounted on sai-d stem for adjusting the cutter with reference to the mouth.
4. A stone plane comprising a sole having a mouth therein, a stock, a cutter mounted in said stock and passing through said mouth, a plate for holding a pneumatic hammer in alinement with said cutter, a spring plunger for holding said hammer in engagement with said cutter, means for adjusting said blade with reference to saidmouth, said cutter having a threaded stem, and nuts mounted on said stem for adjusting the cutter with reference to the mouth.
5. A stone plane comprising a sole having a mouth therein, a stock, a cutter mounted in said stock and passing through said mouth, a pair of inclined rods extending upwardly and rearwardly from said stock, a spring follower mounted on said rods, a plate supported by the sole and adapted to support a pneumatic hammer in alinement with said cutter, said followerl being disposed over said plate, said cutter having a threaded stem, and nuts mounted on said stem for adjusting the cutter with reference to the mouth.
6. A stone plane comprising a sole having a mouth therein, a stock, a cutter mounted in said stock and passing through said mouth, a plate for holding a pneumatic hammer in alinement with said cutter, a spring plunger for holding said hammer in engagement with said cutter, said cutter having a threaded stem, and nuts mounted on said stem for adjusting the cutter with reference to the mouth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
REAL FRENETTE.
