W'ESLEY PANGRAC, OF NILES, KANSAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,336, dated March 1 1, 1902. Application filed October 26,1901. Serial No. 80,072. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WESLEY PANGRAC, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-olhce address is Niles, in the county of Ottawa and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wedge-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wedgecutters; and its object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective hand-operated machine for cutting wooden wedges.
The invention comprises a frame or standard adapted to be clamped in a vise and provided with a seat and cutting-block and a lever having a knifeedge and pivotally secured to the frame.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying'drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a wedge-cutter embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line S 3 of Fig. 1.
The reference-numeral l designates a frame or standard formed at its upper end with a lateral extension 2 and on one side of its upper end with a wedge-shaped recess 3. A plate 4: is secured to the bottom wall of the recess by a bolt 5 and nut 5K G designates a cutting-block, preferably of wood, supported between horizontal shoul.
ders '7 and 8 of the standard and secured by a bolt 9 and a nut 10.
The lever 1l is formed with a dependingthe lever 11 wears away to such an extent that it will not contact with the cutting-block G along the entire upper edge thereof, it is merely necessary to loosen the nut 1G, so that the bolt 13 can be slid downward within the sleeve 15 until said cutting edge assumes its proper position in relation to the block (5.
`The washer 17 is then again clamped against the sleeve 15, thereby locking the said bolt in its adjusted position. This adjustment of the bolt can be repeated as the cutting edge 1S wears off. The under portion 18 of the lever 1l, adjacent to its fulcrnm-point, is reduced to a cutting edge, while its free end 19 serves as a handle.l
I preferably form an opening 2O near the lower end of the standard to adapt the device t0 be hung up when not in use.
The operation of the improvement will be readily understood. A block of wood sawed to the required size is placed within the seat 3 and rests upon the block G. rPhe lever is then forced down to split the block, and thus form the wedge.
It will be understood that the inclination of the plate t may be readily varied by inserting a spacing or filling strip of pastcboard or other material behind it.
I claiml. The combination with a standard having a recess in one face thereof anda wedgeshaped recess at its upper end; of a lateral` extension thereto, a wear-plate secured Within the wedge-shaped recess, a cutting-block detachably secured within the face-recess of the standard, the upper edge thereof being in alinement with the lower edge of the wedgeshaped recess, a lever pivotally secured to the extension of the standard and having a out ting edge` thereto and a vertically-adjustable pivoted bolt to said lever.
2. The combination with a standard hav ing a recess in one face thereof and a wedgeshaped recess at its upper end; of a lateral extension to said standard, an adjustable wear-plate secured within the wedge-shaped recess, a cutting-block detachably secured within the face-recess, the upper edge of said block being in alinement with the lower odge of the Wedge-shaped recess, :i ieverpivoted to In testimony whereof I aix my signature the extension and having a cutting edge in presence of two Witnesses. adapted to bear upon the cutting-block, a v, pivot-ed boit to said lever projecting through XVESLEY PANGRAO' 5 the extension and movable vertically therein Witnesses:
and means upon the bolt for clamping' the A. A. JONES, same in adjusted position. XV. O. OSTRANDER.
