TRAVELING BAG.

Be it known that I, MILTON Lowr, a citi- Zen of the United States, and resident of Port Chester, in the county ot Testchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling Bags, ot' which the following is a specilication.

The present invention relates to improvements in traveling bags of the type coininonly known as suitcases, and has 'for' its main object to provide a receptacle of this type in which strength and durability are combined :with comparatively low cost `ot production.

@Another object of the invention is to provide a. simple -and eiicient means lor the support ot the lid on the body ot the baO', whereby the parts are tightly Ajoined and guided in opening and closing. p Y y v lVith these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the append-ed claims and illustrated .in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion ot the several parts and details of construction within the scopeot the appended claims, without departing from the` spirit or sacriiici-ng any ot the advantages of the invention.

Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section taken through a bag constructed in accordance with the present invention, the saine being shown in open position; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section of the edges of the body and lid of the traveling bag in positions they occupy when the bag is closed.

In the drawings the numeral 10 indicates the body portion ot' the suitcase, and the numeral 11 the lid oi" the same. These two elements are joined by hinges 12, and they are, as usual, provided with a lock and handle, not shown. Catches 13 are provided for the well known purpose.

The sides of the receptacle are reinforced by a wooden traine 15, which is disposed within the same but extends a substantial distance above the opentop thereof, as shown at 16. Upon the inner surface of the wooden traine and the inner face ot the bottom portion of the element 14 is proto the trame and iib'reeleinent 14, or otherwise secured thereto. f

The lid 11 is likewise made'of libre 2O or other .similar -inate-rial, correspondingv with the body of the case to which itis attached. The 'sides of the lid arey reinforced by a wooden traine 21, which is wholly disposed within the lid, `it beingot a depth substantially less than that ot the lid. The arrangement is Isuch that, when the lid is brought to closing position, the tree edges ot the wooden traine 21` rest upon the upper edges of 'the wooden frame 15 oit the body 10. The libre or similar material 2O of the lid is provided with a covering 22, which may be extended over the inner tace of the wooden frame 21, thereby also forming a lining Jfor the latter. The top portion of the lid may also be provided with a lining, denoted by the numeral 23.

Both the body portion of the case and the lid are, as usual, reinforced by corner pieces 24, made o leather or other wear resistant substances. i'

Then the lid is in its closed position, its free edges overlap the upper edges of the wooden frame 15 ot the body 10 by reason of the fact that the said last-mentioned upper edges are oftsetrin relation to the upper edges ot the Afibre receptacle 14. In

That I claim is l. A suit case comprising a box-shaped body part, a box-'shaped lid adapted to close the same, a reinforcing frame Within and resting against the bottom Wall of said body part and having its upper edges projecting above said body part, and a reinforcing frame Within and resting against the top of said lid and having its free edges disposed so that the free edges of said lid project beyond the same, whereby the projecting portions of said lid are brought against the outer faces of the projecting portions of the frame of said body part and the frame of said lid engages the upper edges of the frame of said body part when the lid is in its closed position, the reinforcing frames together being coextensive in length and Width with the side and end Walls of the suit case, the engaging surfaces of the lid and the upper'edges of the frame of the body part being of a shape that there is no tendency for one to slide over the other on account of pressure applied to the top and bottom of the suit case;

A suit ca'sc comprising a box shaped body part, a box shaped-lid adapted to close the same, and rectangularreinforcing frames Within and coextensive in length and Width with the side and end walls of the body and the lid parts` and adapted to have end to end contact With each other when the lid is closed thereby reinforcing the suit case throughout all of the side Walls thereof, the upper edge of the body part on all sides being reduced in thickness on the outer face thereof and the Walls of the lid extending t below the top edge of the reinforce Within the body portion to flushly lit within the reduced portion of the body part, the engaging surfaces of the lid and the upper edges of the frame of the body part being of a shape that there is no tendency for one to slide over the other on account of pressure applied to the top and bottom of the suit case.

A suit case coniprising a box 'shaped body part, a box shaped lid adapted to close the same, and reinforcements within and resting against the bottom and top Walls of the body and lid parts respectively, said reinforcements being coextensive in length and Width with the side and end Walls of the body and-the lid parts and adapted to have end to end contact with each other when the lid is closed thereby reinforcing the suit case on all of the side and end Walls thereof the engaging surfaces of the lid and the upper edges of the body part being of a shape that there is no tendency for one to slide over the other on account of pressure applied to the top and bottom of the suit case.
