HERMAN zmus TILLOTSON, or wnsnmeromn srnrcr or cormunmk Application filed oases, 1925. sem No. 00,605.
To aZZ whomz't may concernp Y c Be it known that I, HERMAN ZENAS Tir- Lo'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, iBSldingfin the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new: and
; useful Improvements in Supporters, of
theornamentito the stocking; v VA further object of'th'e invention is to.
which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to supporters, more particularly to the typeof ornamented rolled stockingsupporter, and has for its objectto provide, in a manner-ashereinafter set forth, a'supportei' offthe class referred to, capable of being conveniently ap plied tothe rolled upperportio'n of a stock-c ing, when on the leg of Ithewea rer, for the purpose of maintaining the; stocking n set position to} prevent it from falling down,
when worn, and further providing means for displaying an ornament at the top of the the stocking without. directly attaching provide, in a manner as hereinafter-set forth, a rolled top stockingsupportercapable of displaying a decorating ornament at the top of the stocking without attach-v ment-directly to thelatter and without imparting a bulky or unsightly efl'ect-to thestocking top.
a provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a rolled top stocking supporter pro-, viding means for. maintainingfthe rolled portion of ;the stockingin position and whereby said rolled portion will conceal a garter when worn.
s A further objectofthe invention to'' provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a rolled top stocking supporter for efliciently supporting the stocking in set po- 7 sition, when worn, especially when *the stocking is wet and worn at bathing beaches, and further to provide a'device of the. class referred' to, which is not injurious in any manner,to the stocking when applied to the 5 latter when employed to perform its supporting function with respect tothe stockin \r 3 further object of the invention is to provide, in 'a manner as hereinafter set forth, a stocking supporting device for use in connection with adult and childrens stockings for the purpose of supporting them when worn in set positiomand fur ther-to provide a supporting device for the purpose referred to wherein any character I further object of the inventionis of, ornament can be displayed' without a garter being visible, and furtherto'main tain the stocking in ti htly rolled condition at the upper portion t 'ereo f when supporting the-ornament.
V F rther 'ob 'ects of the invention-are .to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, astocking supporter of the typere ferred to, which is's'imple in itsconstructijon and arrangement, strong, durable, co'i'npact,-
ornamental in appearance, thoroughly eflicient n its use, conveniently applied, and I comparatively, inexpensive to manufacture.
; With the foregoing and other objects in view,- the invention consists of the, novel con struction, combination and arran' ement'of,
parts,, as' hereinafter =mor specifically describecland illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is'shown an embodiment 1 ofv the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted towhich come "within th'ef scope of the claims hereunto appended. 1
the drawings wherein like {reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:'
Figure 1 is a, perspective viewf of a leg proyided with 'ai rolled top stocking and showing the"adaptation/therewith of a supporter, in, accordance withthis invention;
Figure 2 is a 'side elevationof the sup porter-prior to theflpositio'nin'g of the same,
with respect to ;the
rolled upper portion of thestocking.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the sup-'- p orte'r injsecuring' position with respect to the rolled, upperportion of the stocking) purpose of maintaining the stocking 2 in r set position, is a supporter in accordance with this invention and which is referred to generally by the reference character 4, and
which has as a pe'rmanent part thereofi'an ornamenting element 5 positioned against the outer wrap of the rolled portion 3 and concealing a part of a roll retaining or embracing member referred to generally by the reference character 6.
In the form shown in Figures 1 to 5,
1 the supporter comprises an anchoring means in the form of a leg encircling element which is termed a garter 7, which when the supporter is applied, is interposed between the rolled portion 3 of the stocking 2 and the body of the stocking as illustrated in Figure 3. The garter 7 can be of any form desired, that is to say of the adjust able type or formed of a length of elastic webbing, or non-adjustable, but as shown by way of example is illustrated as the adjustable type provided with buckles. It is to be understood, however, that the garter 7 can be constructed in any manner desired, as well as formed from any desired material.
The retaining member 6 is slidably mounted at one end, on the garter 7 and is preferably of a length, when bent transversely thereof, to embrace the roll 3 and be positioned between the body of the stocking and the leg 1. The retaining or embracing member 6 is such as to possess an inherent holding characteristic for the purpose of maintaining the wraps of the rolled portion 3 tightly together when said member is in retaining or in embracing position with respect to the roll. 3. The member 6 can be formed of any suitable means possessing the aforesaid characteristic and preferably the member 6 consists of a length of non-elastic, bendable, light metallic material 7 and which is enclosedby a fabric casing 8. The upper end of the member 6 is bent upon itself, as at 9, to provide a loop 10 to permit of the mounting of said member 6 on the garter 7. The bent portion of the member 6 is secured to the body of the latter by a suitable stitching 11 for engagement with the fabric casing 8.
Secured to the member 6 and forming a permanent part of the supporter, is the ornament 5. The ornament 5 is secured to the outer face of the member 6 at a point between its transverse median and its upper end, and when the supporter is applied to the rolled top 3 of the stocking 2 the ornament 5 is positioned against the outer wrap of the roll 3 and conceals the member. 6. It is to be understood that any other style of ornament other than the ornament 5 can be connected to the member 6, such as a pendant, brooch, etc.
When the supporter is applied to the stocking 2, the garter 7 is interposed between the roll 3 and the body of the stocking 2, see Figure 3, and the retaining member bent around the outer face of the roll 3 and extended downwardly between the stocking 2 and the leg 1. As the body portion 7 of the member 6 is of non-elastic, light, bendable, metallic material, the roll 3 will be secured tightly together whereby it will be maintained in position and the stocking will be supported in set position so that it will not fall down when worn. The garter 7 assists in securing the stocking in set position.
In a great many instances, the rolled portion of the stocking acts as a means to sup-- L port the stocking as long as the wraps of the roll are held tightly together, but the moment that the roll becomes loose, the stocking will fall and for the purpose of maintaining the roll in tight position to support the stocking and without the employment of a garter, the form of supporter shown in Figure 6 is employed. The form shown in Figure 6 consists of a retaining member 12 constructed of a body portion formed of a length of non-elastic, bendable, light, metallic material encased by a fabric casing and bent upon itself and secured together, as at 13. The bent portion 13 carries a headed stud 1a. The member 12, at its upperend,
is also bent upon itself and secured to gether as at 1a for connecting therewith a fastener member 15 which coacts with the headed stud ll for anchoring the member 12 around the roll 3 to maintain the wraps thereof tightly together. The outer face of the member 12 has secured thereto an ornament 16 forthe purpose of concealing said member 12 when the latter is in retaining position. 7
hen the form of supporter shown in Figure 6 is employed, the member 12'is ar ranged against the outer face of the roll 3 and extends between the leg 1 and the stock ing 2, and the fastener member 15 depends from the roll 3 and coacts with the stud 1 1 for coupling therewith the portion 17 of the stocking 2 to maintain the retaining member in position, and when the elements are arranged in the manner asstated, the supporter secures the rolled top stocking in set position.
It is thought the many advantages of a supporter, in accordance with this invention, for rolled top stockings, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet' it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
