To all whom it may con-0cm:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns C. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Double-Drum Hoist, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to hoists, but more particularly to hoists of the double drum type in which one or the other of the drums may be selectively connected to be driven by acommon source of power, and in which the power element is adapted to rotate in only one direction.
The objects of the invention are to construct a compact and well balanced hoist having separate clutch devices for each of the drums and to enable such devices to be actuated with certainty and precision for connecting one or the other of the drums to be driven by the driving shaft.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part point-ed out hereinafter.
The invention consists of the combinations of elements, features of construction and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in. the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view in elevation of the double drum hoist constructed in accordance with the practice of the invention,

Referring to the drawings, A indicates a base plate on one end of which is mounted a suitable motor B indicated diagram matically and on the opposite end a frame- C. The motor B may be of any suitable non-reversible type, but in this instance an electric motor is intended to be indicated.

A driving shaft D extends longitudinally of the hoist coaxially with a motor shaft E and the adjacent ends of the shafts D and E are suitably connected as by means of flutes F to receive slidably a correspondingly fluted collar G which connects and holds said shafts against rotation with respect to each other. A haulage drum H carrying a haulage rope J and a tail rope drum K carrying a tail rope L are mounted rotatably about the driving shaft. The tail rope drum K in this instance is provided with a hollow cylindrical extension 0 supported at its free end by an anti-friction bearing P arranged in the frame C. The drum H is mounted upon the extension 0 and is provided with anti-friction bearings Q journalled on said extension. A spacer R is interposed between the anti-fraction bearings Q for preventing longitudinal movement of said bearings.
In order to provide a support for the drum K, the usual end cover of theinotor'B may be replaced by a cover S having an extension T upon which an anti-friction bearing.
U may be mounted to cooperate with the interior of the drum K. The end of the ex tension T is in this instance screw threaded to receive a nut V wl'iereby thebearing U may be retained on said extension. The shaft E is preferably provided with an anti.- friction bearing and similar anti-friction bearings XV are provided for the ends of the shaft D and are arranged in the drum K and the frame C respectively.
A drum driver X is in this instance keyed to the extension 0 of the drum K and may be in the form of a gear meshing with a 'main driver Y in the form of a pinion. A
drum driver Y formed as an internal gear on a flange Z of the drum H meshes with a similar main driver or pinion 6. The main drivers Y and b are in this instance respectively formed integrally with two parallel shafts c which shafts are provided with anti-friction bearings (Z, the inner of which bearings is arranged in the frame G and the outer bearing (Z is mounted in a screw supported by a cover plate Means are provided for selectively connecting one or the other of the drums to be driven by the driving shaft D, to this end clutch drums g are keyed to the shafts c and carry a plurality of friction discs 72,. The friction discs h are of a well known type and are provided with a plurality of inwardly extending keys 3' which fit loosely into key slots k so that the "discs may move longitudinally in said key slots but are held against rotative movement with respect to the clutch drums. Gears .0 mounted rotatably on shafts 0 and in constant mesh with a driving pinion 29 carried by the shaft D encircle the clutch drums and are provided with a plurality of friction discs (1 which are arranged alternately with the discs h carried by the clutch drums g. The discs Q are keyed to the gears 0 in the manner explained in connection with the discs h. The gears 0 preferably have slight longitudinal movement on the shafts 0 so that in the absence of pressure against said gears, the discs h and g are free to rotate with respect to each other without creating any appreciable friction.
To the end that the friction discs hand Q may be pressed into frictional engagement with each other, spur gears 7" adapted to bear against the gears o are mounted on the screws 6 and are in constant mesh with a pinion s keyed to a spindle t. The spur gears 7' have internally threaded portions u to cooperate with the screws 6 so that when said gears are rotated in one direction or the other, they will move back or forth upon said screws depending upon the directionin which they are rotated. The face of the pinion a is preferably somewhat wider than the cooperating faceof the gears r so that the gears during the back and forth move-. ment will constantly'remain in engagement with said pinion.
Any suitable means may be provided for rocking the pinion s, in this instance a handle w is indicated and is heldon the spindle if by means of a suitable nut 00. A gear casing 3/ to which the cover plate f is secured and which supports the spindle t is preferably formed integrally with the frame C.
Suitable braking devices may be provided and in this instance, a band a encircles the flange Z of the drum H. Similarly a band a is arranged about a flange 2 of the drum K. Any suitable mechanism 'may' be provided for manipulating said bands, but since these brake devices do not constitute any part of the invention and are well known, further description thereof is considered un- IIGCQSSSIY.
and .9 into frictional engagement with each other. In this way the gear 0 will be clutched to the shaft 0, and since the gear 0 is in constant mesh with the driving pinion p, rotary movement of the shaft D will thus be transmitted to the main driver 5 and consequently to the drum H. Movement of the pinion s in the direction described will multaneously cause the other gear 4* to travel upon its supporting screw 0 and thus move the friction discs of the other clutch out of engagement with each other so that the gear on the main driver Y is free torotate about its shaft 0. Upon reversal of the pinion s, the connection between the drum H and the driving shaft G will be broken and the clutch associated with said main driver Y will be simultaneously tightened to form a driving connection between said clutch and the tail rope drum K.
By making the gear r for the main driver X somewhat smaller than the gear 1" for the main driver 6, the tail rope drum K may be run or rotated at a considerably higher speed'with the same motor speed than the haulage drum H. This is a distinct advantage in hoists of this type in view of the fact that the tail rope drum usually carries a lighter load than the haulage drum. By operating the tail rope drum at a greater speed than the haulage drum, the efficiency of the hoist may be greatly increased.
I claim:
1. In a hoist, the combination of a frame, a driving shaft supported at oneend by the frame, drums rotatable about said driving shaft, one of said drums supporting the other end of said driving shaft, a motor adapted to run in only one direction and connected to the driving shaft, drum drivers in the form of spur gears carried by the drums and rotatable in the same transverse plane, main drivers constantly meshing with the drum drivers, friction d1sc clutches associated with the main drivers, and manually operable oscillatory means for tight ening one clutch to connect one of the drums with thedriving shaft and simultaneously releasing the other clutch for disconnecting the-other drum from the driving shaft.
2. In a hoist, the combination of a frame, a driving shaft, drums rotatable about said driving shaft, a motor adapted to rotate in only one direction and connected to one end of said driving shaft, a driving pinion keyed to the other end. of the driving shaft, drum drivers carried by the drums, ,main drivers constantly meshing with the drum drivers, clutch drums keyed to the main drivers, a plurality of friction discs keyed to the clutch drums, gears encircling the clutch drums and meshing with the driving pinion, a plurality of friction discs keyed to the gears and arranged alternately with the friction discs on the clutch drums, and manually operable oscillatory means for forcing the discs of one clutch drum and one gear into frictional engagement with each other for connecting one drum to be driven by the driving shaft and simultaneously moving the discs on the other clutch drum and the other gear out of frictional engagement with each other for disconnecting the other drum from the driving shaft.
3. In a hoist, the combination of a frame, a driving shaft, a driving pinion on said shaft, drums rotatable about the driving shaft, drum drivers carried by the drums, a motor adapted to rotate in only one direc tion and connected to the driving shaft, niain drivers constantly associatedwith the drum drivers, friction disc clutches on the main drivers and adapted to be rotated by the driving pinion, screws coaxial with the main drivers and supported by the frame, spur gears rotatable on the screws for tightening and releasing the clutches, a pinion constantly meshing with the spur gears, and a handle for rocking the pinion Whereby one of the spur gears may be spiraled about one screw for tightening one of the clutches and for simultaneously spiralling the other gear about the other screw for releasing the other clutch.
