POWER DRUM MECHANISM.

My invention relates to pow r drum mechanisms and more particularly to power drum mechanisms for use in the movement of objects toward and away from the drum mechanism.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved double drum hoisting or traction mechanism. Another object of my invention is to provide an improved double drum hoisting or traction mechanism comprising a sin gle prime mover and means for rcversely wincing traction members of any kind. Other objects of my invention will appear in the course of the following specification and the appended claims.

The drum mechanism 1 is iournalcd in a suitable support generally designated 6 comprising a base 7 and upright standards 8 and 9; and in these standards stub shafts 10 are journalcd by means of suitable bearings 11. The inner drum 2 comprises a central portion 1.2 and. end portions 13 and 14k respectively. Within the hollow interior of the drum 2 is an improved driving motor, generally indicated by 15, corresponding to the type discl sed in my co-pending application, Ser. No. 430,211, tiled December 13, 1920, which motor comprises a pair of rotors 16 and 1? provided with intermeshing tooth blades to which liuid is admitted for expansive action asdescrihedinm ;precedingapplication. The motive fluid is exhausted in the same manner as in my preceding application; and as this portion of my invention is fully disclosed in the preceding case, no further description is deemed necessary. Power is transmitted from the shaft 18 coaxial with the rotor 16 by way of spur gears 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 2 1 to an internal gear mounted upon a wheel or head member 26, the latter being mounted concentric with and rotatable relative to the exterior of the journal for the right hand shaft 10 in the standard 9. As disclosed in my previous application referred to above, the internal gear 25 is surrounded upon its periphery by a brake band which is held against rotation relativ to the base 7 by means 31 and which may be tightened by mechanism generally indicated at of the type described in the aforesaid previous application to maintain the internal gear stationary and thereby cause rotation of the drum 2.
The drum 2 is provided at its longitudinal center with an annular longitudinally shiftable clutch sleeve member 33 having a sliding hey connection therewith and means are shown at 34 for shifting said sleeve longitudinally oi the drum in either direction. The member 33 has tooth members 35 and 36 formed on its opposite sides and adapted to interlock with teeth 37 and 38 formed on flanges 39 and 40 disposed at the adjacent ends of the drums 3 and 4. The flanges39 and 40 are provided with braking surfaces and brake bands ll and L2 similar to the band 30 serve to brake either or both ot the drums. it being noted that these bands are held againstrotation by means similar to the means 31. Upon the drums 3 and -l are wound cables 51. and 52, respectively, these being wound in opposite directions and secured to the drum members 3 and 4 at one end.
The mode of operation of this improved mechanism will be readily apparent. The drum or traction mechanism may he employed for pulling in opposite directions by the attachment of the free ends of the cables 51 and 52 to members to be moved, and by employing av stationary pulley at a point beyond the member. to be moved and passing one of the cables 51 and 52 about the pulley beitore attachment to the member to be moved. Assuming the drum 2 to rotate in a given dircction, say in a counter-clockwise direction rcterring to Fig. 2 with. the parts as shown, and assuming the cable 51 to be attached directly to a member to be moved and assuming further that the cable is wound upon the drum in a clockwise direction from its fixed point, it will be evident that the member which is being controlled by the traction mechanism will be moved toward the same. If the cable 52 which is wound upon the drum 3 is attached, around a fixed pulley, to the member being moved, it will be unwound as the drum et is released. By shifting the clutch 33 and tightening and releasing the bands 30, all and 42 the operation of the mechanism can be completely controlled. 'Iightening either of the brakes llor 4L2 retards rotation of its respective drum. Tightening the band 30 results in rotation of drum 2 and whichever of the drums 3 or I is attached thereto. Loosening of the band 30 stops the driving of drum 2, and so of both drums 8 and 4.
In the modification fragmentarily shown in Fig. 3, the general details of construction are the same as in Figs. 1 and 2, but I have shown a ditlercnt form of controlling means for the drums 3 and 4, whereby they may be more readily connected to and disconnected from the drum 2. and this without stopping the hoist. It will be noted that the adjacent sides of the drums 3 and l are provided with upstanding opposed collars 39 and 40, each of said collars having flange l3 directed towards the other and provided with keys cooperating with friction disks l l interposed between friction disks 4L5 keyed to the drum 2 as at 46. The sleeve 33 serves to force the friction disks ll and 45 into frictional engagement to connect the drums 3 and i with the drum 2 or to release them.
In each form of my invention illustrated, it will be noted that I have provided means comprising a plurality of drums mounted upon the exterior of the drum forming the motor housin and adapted to be clutched thereto for rotation therewith whereby by reason of the attachment of traction means upon the drums and the use of suitable cable connections a member may be caused to move toward and away from my improved traction mechanism. It will also be evident that the drums may be used separately and that either drum will then be usable as a single drum hoist.
While I have in this application specifically described two forms which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these forms of the same are shown for illustrative purposes and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of relatively rotatable coaxial rope winding drums. a member disposed within said drums and rotatable relative thereto, a motor disposed within said member, operative driving connections between said motor and said member, and means for alternatively clutching said drums to said member.
2. In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of relatively rotatable coaxial rope winding drums, a member disposed within and supporting said drums, said member being rotatable relative to said drums, a motor disposed within said member, operative driving connections between said motor and said member, and means for alternatively positively clutching said drums to said member.
3. In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of relatively rotatable coaxial rope winding drums, a member disposed within said drums and rotatable relative thereto, a motor disposed within said member, operative driving connections between said motor and said member including manually operable friction controlling means, said controlling means being operative to permit running of said motor while said member remains stationary, and means for alternatively positively clutching said drums to said member.

In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable housing member, a motor disposed within said housing member, operative driving conncctions between said motor and said housing member, a plurality of relatively rotatable rope winding drums journaled on and disposed coaxially with said housing memher, and means rotatable with said housing member for alternatively connecting said drums thereto.
7. In a hoisting mechanism, a driving motor having a casing, a plurality of rope winding drums surrounding said casing, said casing being disposed between the remote ends of said winding drums, and operative driving connections between said motor and drums including a common element tor alternatively connecting said drums in driving relation with said motor.
13. In a hoist, a plurality of independently rotatable rope winding drums rotatable about alined ares, a driving motor lying within said drums and comprising a pair of intermeshing rotors bodilyrotatable about the line of said axes as an axis, and means for altenatively connecting said drums in driving relation to said motor.
14. In a motor driven hoist, a plurality of independently rotatable rope vinding drums rotatable about alined axes, a driving motor lying within said drums and comprising a pair of inter-meshing rotors bodily rotatable about the line of said axes an axis, and means for alternatively connecting said drums in driving relation to said motor for rotation at an angular rate equal to the angular speed of bodily movement of said r0- tors.

In a. hoist, a rotatable casing, a motor contained in said casing, a pair of relatively rotatable rope winding drums rotatably mounted upon the periphery of said casing, operative driving connections between said motor and said casing, and longitudinally of said casing ly connecting saic drums in drivin to said motor.

In a hoist, a drum, a rotatable motor disposed therein and bodily rotatable at the same speed therewith, a plurality of drums loosely mounted upon the periphery of. said first mentioned drum, a gear rotatably mounted onsaid first mentioned drum and rotatable by power from said motor upon an axis parallel to the aXis of said drum but spaced therefrom, a member carrying a gear with which said first mentioned gear is adapted to mesh and which constitutes a track around which said first mentioned gear rolls during rotation of said drum, and means for locking one or the other of said second mentioned drums to said first mentioned drum.

In a hoist, a drum, a rotatable motor disposed therein and bodily rotatable at the same speed therewith, a plurality of drums loosely mounted upon the periphery of said first mentioned drum, a. gear carried by said first mentioned drum and adapted to rotate upon an axis parallel to the axis of said drum but spaced therefrom, a member carrying a gear with which said first mentioned ear is adapted to mesh during rotation or said axis parallel to the axis of said drum but spaced therefrom, a membercarrying a gear with which said iirst mentioned gear is adapted to mesh during rotation of said drum, means "for locking one or the other of said second mentioned drums to said. first mentioned drum, means for locking or releasing said gear carrying member at will, and means for manually braking said second mentioned drums at will.
23. In a hoist, a motorhaving a casing provided with journals at the opposite ends thereof, a pair of relatively rotatable rope winding drums having bearing portions co operating with said journals, operative driving connections between said motor andsaid drums including clutch mechanism movable longitudinally of said casing for connecting said drums in driving relation to said motor.

In a hoisting mechanism, a pair relatively rotatable rope winding drums, a hollow member for supporting and driving said drums and rotatable at the same angular rate as the drum being driven, means for supporting said hollow member, means movable relative to and carried by said hollow member whereby said drums may be alternatively connected in driving relation to said hollow member and driven one drum at a time, a motor disposed within said hollow member, operative driving connections between said motor and hollow member including a driving shaft disposed within said hollow member and rotatable relative thereto during drum driving, and reduction gears between said shaft and hollow member. 4

In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of relatively rotatable rope winding drums, a hollow member for supporting and driving said drums and rotatable the same angular rate as the drum being driven, means for supporting said hollow men'iber, means movable relative to and carred by said hollow member whereby said drums may be alternatively connected in driving relation to said hollow member and driven one drum at a time, a motor disposed within and rotatable with said hollow member, operative driving connections between said motor and hollow member including a driving shaft disposed within said hollow member and rotatable relative thereto during drum driving, and r duction gcarsbctween said shaft and hollow member.

In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of relatively rotatable rope winding drums adapted to be alternatively driven, a. hollow member disposed within saiddrums and adapted to be rotatable at the same angular rate 'as the drum being driven, a motor disposed within said hollow member, operative driving connections between said motor and member including a power transmission shaft disposed within said member for drivin either of said drums and always rotatable relative to said member, and longitudinally movable means common to said drums for operatively connecting the latter and said member.
In a hoisting mechanism, a plurality o'l relatively rotatable rope winding drums, a cylindrical member upon which said drums are journaled and which rotates the angula speed at which said drums are driven-during the winding operation, a motor disposed within said member, operative driving connections between said motor and said member including power transmission shaft disposed within said member, reduction gearing operatively connected with said member throi h said shaft, and means for alternatively connecting said drums in driving relation to said member.
28. In a hoisting mechanism, a drum driver member rotatable in only one direction by power, a motor disposed in and retatable with said member, a plurality of relatively rotatable ropewinding drums journaled upon the exterior of said member and coaxial therewith, operative driving connections between said motor and said member including a power transmission shaft disposed within said drums and including means whereby said member may remain idle during running of the motor, and means for positively connecting said drums to said member and for disconnecting the'same'therefrom. p
29. In a hoist, a pair of relatively rotatable winding drums disposed on acommon axis, a rotatable cylindrical member coaxial with said drums and on which thelatter are journal'ed, clutch mechanism including a clutch member carried and driven by said cylindrical member or alternatively connecting said drums to said cylindrical member for rotation therewith, and driving means for said cylindrical member including driving gearing disposed at one end of said cylindrical member and a motor having a power shaft disposed within and rotatable relative to said cylindrical member, said driving gearing being operatively connected to said power shaft.
30. Ina hoisting mechanism, a rotatable cylindrical member, a pair of relatively rotatable rope winding drums surrounding said cylindrical member-and support-ed thereby, and driving mechanism for said pair of drums including clutch teeth carried by the adjacent ends of said drums and a drum driver comprisingclutch means alternatively shittable into driving engagement with teeth carried by one or the other of said drums alternatively, said drum driver being carried and driven by said rotatable cylindrical member and said cylindrical member being driven through driving mechanism including a drive shaft disposed Within said cylindrical member, and gearing disposed at one end of said cylindrical member and operatively connected to said drive shaft.
31. In a hoisting mechanism, a rotatable cylindrical member, a pair of relatively rotatable rope winding drums journaled on said cylindrical member, clutch mechanism for alternatively connectin one or the other of said drums to said cylindrical member for rotation therewith, said clutch mechanism being disposed intermediate the adjacent ends of said drums, and driving mechanism for said cylindrical member comprising a drive shaft disposed Within said cylindrical member and gearing disposed at one end of said cylindrical member and operatively connected to said drive shaft.
32. In a hoisting mechanism, a pair of drums rotatable about alined axes, a driving motor therefor intermediate the remote ends of said drums and having a housing provided With means for jonrnaling said drums directly thereon, said motor comprising motor rotors rotating about axes parallel to the drum axes, and driving connections between aid motor and said orums permitting separate drive of the latter.
38. In a hoisting mechanism, a frame comprising motor housing presenting cylindrical bearing surfaces at opposite to ends therc of, relatively rotata le winding drums alined with said motor and rotatably supported on said bearing surfaces, and driving connections between said motor and drums.
