WATERPROOF POCKET.
Application filed April 12-, 1925. Serial n5. 22,532.
1 0 all ie/1 0m it may concern:
3e it known that l', ERNST Fnanrz, a citizen of Germany, residing at Newark, county oi Essex, and State of New Jersey, have in ented certain new and useful .lmprovenients in Yi aterproot Pockets of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pockets for garments, and has particular reference to a waterproof poclict especially adapted for use on bathing suits and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved pocket ot' simple and inexpensive construction which when attached to a garment and closed, will effectively protect the contents of the pocket against moisture.
Another object is to provide a pocket in which the flap is made to roll up and engage a portion of the body of the pocket adjacent the opening thereof in such manner that said opening will be securely closed by said flap and portion.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates preferred embodiments of the inventive idea.
in the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pocket showing the same in closed position;
Figure 2 is a similar view with the pocket opened;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of liinure and Figure 4 is a fragmentary end elevation of a slightly different form of closure flap.
'lhe pocket of the present invention is particularly designed for use on bathing suits and adapted to contain various articles 7 such as a powder puff, cosmetics and the like, which must he kept dry in order to he of use.-
In accordance with the invention, the pocket may be manufactured as a separate article to be attached to a garment or may be made as an integral part of said garment. In the former case, it is preferable to provide a backing 5 made from any suitable fabric which is of sulhcient dimensions to permit it to be securely attached to the garment in any desired manner. The body of the pocket is 1nade of rubberized fabric or other suitable material impervious: to
moistu e and consists of a hack portion "3 and a front portion 7 swurcd together and to the hacking along their liottoiu e 5: and a portion of the side co thei'co't in, stitches 8, said stitches torn M61113 short oi the upper edges oit' said portions for a purpose which will presently appear.
'lhe hat-l; portion (3 is of greater length than the front '7 to provide a flap 9 in which is embedded, in the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to S, a resilient plate 10. This plate is made so as to normally assume a rolled up or coil shape and extends downwardly through the flap 9 and into the hacl: portion (3 to a point adjacent the upper ends of the stitches S, as clearly shown in Figure 2. With the pocket open as shown in said tigurc, it is necessary to hold the flap 9 to prevent the same from coiling to its clos ing position but upon the rol of said flap, the plate 10 will roll up and in so do- -ing will lirst coil the flap f) and then the upper portion of the front '1' which is not stitched to the hacking 5. After the plate is completely coiled, the i'lap assumes the position shown in Figure 1 in which position the opening to the pocket is completely closed with the up )(l edge of the front concealed and interposed between the coils of the flap and adjacent portion of the hack 6. A tab 11 is attached to the hack 6 and carries the head 12 of a snap fastener which may he engaged with a stud 13 oi said fastener secured to the front 7 in any suitahle position.
To open the pocket it is only necessary to loosen the ap :3 stencr and then unrolllhc iap against the tension of the spring plate 10.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure -l the plate 10 may he dispensed with in which case the flap is mad-c of a suitable material which may he n'iolded so that. it will normally a sume the coiled position shown in said. figure and return to such position alter the pocket has been opened.
hat is claimed is:
1. A pocket for garments including front and hack portions, a flap formed on or i of said portions, and a normally coiled mnt plate carried by said flap and extending co incident with a part of the latter portion for causing said flap and said part to normally assume a coiled condition to form a rolled closure for the opening in said pocket;
2. A pocket for garments including from ti l and back portions formed or waterproof material a flap forming an extension 01" one of said portions, and a normally coiled resilient plate embedded in said flap and a part of the last named portion and operable to coil said part and flap to form a rolled closure for the opening in said pocket.
* pocket for garments including backing, front and back portions for said pocket secured to said backingalong their bottom and portions of their side edges the upper ends of said edges being unattached to said backing, a flap forming an extension of one of said portions, and a normally coiled resilient element embedded in said flap and a part of the latter portion and operable to roll up said flap and the unattached parts of said front and back portions to form a closure for said pocket,
In testimony whereol I have affixed my 20 si gnature.
