Be it known that I, Fnnnniuok J. Sermon, acitizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Helmepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor Waters and Polishers; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a device for war;- ing, oiling and polishing floors. [is well known, it is the customary practice with highly finished floors to wax the same by applying thereto a coating of war; or grease which coating is subsequently polished.

It is an object of this invention to provide a device by which the wax or material used on the floor can be quickly and conveniently applied and by means of which the floor can be polished. I

It is a further object of the invention to provide such a device comprising a sheet of comparatively soft material with means for holding a cloth thereon,which cloth extends around the undersurface thereof, together with means for holding the material to be applied and feeding the same to the floor.

It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide such a device comprising a rectangular sheet of material having a plate secured on the'top thereof, which plate carries a container for the material to be applied having an open lower end extending through the plate and sheet, said plate carrying a springactuated clamp adapted to hold the cloth which extendsbeneath said sheet.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the' saine parts throughout the different views, and in which,

The sheet 1 has secured there- .to by headed and nutted bolts 2 the heads of which are countersunk into the sheet 1, a plate 3 preferably of metal, which plate is shaped similarly to the sheet 1 and extends adjacent the edges thereof. 'The plate 3 and sheet 1 to form, in effect, a baseandare centrallyapertured to receive the reduced portion of a cylindrical container 4 having an open lower end which is; disposed slightly above the bottom edge of the sheet 1. The container 4 is interiorly threaded and a plunger member 5 is threaded therein having a closed lower end, which plunger meniber may be made hollow and provided with a closed top 5 the edge of which projects slightly and preferably is knurled or milled to facilitate easy and convenient'turning thereof. The plate 3 has projecting centrally from opposite sides thereof studs 6 threaded adjacent their upper ends to receive nuts 7 contacting the upper ends-of coiled springs. 7' surrounding said studs and bearing at their lower ends on a fiat strip of material 8 shown as of generally rectangular shape with curved or rounded corners. Said strip 8 has at'its other or opposite sides a pair of bail handles 9 having eyeletsl) at their ends through which pass suitable screws or rivets securing said handles to said strip. The strip 8 forms a clamping means adapted to overlie and clamp the edges 10 of a cloth 10 extending around the bottom surface of the sheet 1. j

The plate. 3 also has at one side angle brackets 11 secured thereto which are oppositely disposed and receive between. their vertical flanges, the flat end 12 of an operating handle 12, a portion only of which is shown. The portion 1% of the handle is connected to the angle bracket 11 by a headed and n'utted pivot bolt 13.

In operation, the wax or material to be placed on the floor will be placed in the container 4, as indicated at 14 and the plunger 5 will be screwed down on top of this material. A wax receiving and applylOO ing means illustrated as a thin soft cloth shown at 10 will then be placed beneath the sheet 1, the end edges thereof being held under the spring clamp S. This cloth can conveniently be placed under the sides of said clamp by resting the hand on top of the member 5 and raising one side of the clamp with the fingers by means of handle 9. The tension on the clamp 8 can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the nut Ton the stud 6. After the device is thus prepared, the. same can be reciprocated over the floor, the plunger 5 being turned at intervals. The wax 14; is pressed downwardly and passes through the thin cloth 10 into contact with the floor. The device will be reciprocated over the floor by means of the handle 12 so that uniform coating of the wax will be quickly and conveniently applied. After the floor is sutiiciently coated, the thin cloth 10 will be replaced by a heavier polishing cloth, such as canton flannel or felt, the heavier cloth being held in position by the clamp 8. The device can now be reciprocated over the floor for polishing the same and the floor can thus be easily and quickly polished.

From the above description it is seen that applicant has provided a simple, etiicient and convenient device for waxing and polishing floors. The plate 3, container and plunger 5 being made of metal, the device has considerable weight and the necessary pressure is thus applied to the floor for polishing the same and for holding the device in proper position. The parts of the device are few and the device is Qilfilly' and quickly operated and manipulated. The same has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and eflicient. It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention,

which, generally stated, consists in a de ice capable of carrying out. the objects above set forth, such as shown and described and defined in the appended claims.

lVhat is claimed 1. A floor waxing and polishing device comprising a sheet of comparatively soft material, a container carried above said sheet and having an open lower end extending therethrough, a wax receiving and applying means disposed beneath said container and sheet, means for pressing semi-solid material downward tl'irough said container, into contact with said means, and means for holding said wax receiving and applying means in position.

A floor waxing and polishing device con'iprising' a sheet of con'iparatively soft material, a plate secured to the top of said sheet, a cloth disposed beneath said coniaiin er and sheet. a container carried by said plate and having an open bottom extending through said plat: and sheet, means movable downwardly in said container for pressing semi-solid material therefrom to said cloth. and a clamp carried by said plate adapted to hold said edges of the cloth in position.

3. L tioor waxing and polishing device having in combination, a base comprising a bottom sheet of comparatively soft material, a container carried by said base adapted to contain semi-solid floor coating material, said container having an opening at its bottom extending through said base, and means for pressing said material downwardly in said container and through said opening.

A. floor treating device comprising a sheet of comparatively soft material of generally rectangular form, a similarly shaped plate secured to said sheet, a clamp of generally rectangular form mounted on said plate, resilient means pressing said clamp downwardly at central points on opposite sides thereof. and handles centrally secured to said clamp on the other opposite sides thereof.

:7. tloor waxing and polishing device comprising a rectangular sheet of compara tively soft material, a rectangular plate secured to the top thereof, a cylindrical container disposed substantially entrally of said plate and having an open bottom extending through said sheet and plate, a plunger threaded. into said container, :1 Few tangular strip of material disposed on said plate, adjustable resilient means pressing said strip against said plate, and bandles at opposite sides of said strip whereby the end may rest on said plunger to engage one of said handles to lift said strip to insert the edge of a cloth thereunder, which cloth extends under the bottom of said sheet.

6. A floor waxing device comprising a plate, a wax receiving member thereheneath. a container for semi-solid wax supported on said plate and communicating with said member, and means in said container for pressing the semi-solid wax there n into contact with said member.
