Description
R. W. M CLELLAND' DEMOUNTABLE CLIP FOR BRAKE BANDS Dec. 29 1925- Filed April 20, 1925 IO FIG. 2. a I
"lllllllllll I I I INVENTOR Rncumowo W.MSCLELLAND A ORNEY Patented Dec. 29, 1925.
PATENT-OFFICE.
RICHMOND w. MG'CLELLAND, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DEMOUNTABLE GL1? FOR BRAKE BAN DS.
Application filed April 20, 1925.
To all whom it nmgz concern.
Be it known that I, RICHMOND W. Mo- OLELLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deniountable Clips for Brake Bands, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to demountable clips for external brake-bands, and more particularly to clips of a character adapted to be readily removed and replaced, as the necessity arises for relining the brake-bands, without requiring the dismantling of the entire mechanism, as is the case with the directly and rigidly connected clip of present brake-band construction.
A principal object of the invention is to provide clips of the character described, that are of simple and durable construction, that are readily detached from and replaced upon the brake-band, and that, in the event of the breaking of a brake-band, may be cheaply installed upon a new band.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary brake-band, showing my demountable clips in attached positions upon the outer surface of the band near its extremities. as snl'istitutes for the ordinary rigid clips, which are usually riveted securely to the band at these points;
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view, showing one of the clips and the relative positions of the retaining T-shaped members riveted to the brake-hand body near its extremities and adapted to extend through openings formed in the clips, affording means of attachment, the central one of which acts as a pivotal point about which the clip is moved preliminary to removal from or its replacement upon the brake band; and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional detail of an end of the band one of the clips, taken on the line 33 of Figure 2, showing the T-shaped member in position.
Serial No. 24,344.
eferring to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to Figure 1, 1 and 2 indicate my improved demountable clips as they appear secured in position for use upon the brake-band ends, being of similar shape and made to conform to the arcuate outer surface of the brake-band 3, in addition to being interchangeable.
The clips 1 and 2 are comprised, respectively, of a plate 4 having an integrally formed bifurcated end extension 5, forming an open slot 6 adapted to receive the contractive mechanism for band-tightening (not shown), a centrally positioned transverse slot 7, oppositely positioned openings 8 and 9 extending from the longitudinal center line to opposite outer edges thereof, and reinforcing ribs 10 and 11, portions of the rib 11 being cut away to allow free movement of the retaining members, hereinafter described.
The brake-band 3 is provided with sets of exteriorly arranged retaining T- shaped members 12, 13 and 14 comprised each of two, or more, members riveted to the band near its extremities and extending in longitudin al alignment therewith, with elongated heads 15, 16 and 17 adapted to engage, re spectively, the openings and slots 8, 7 and 9, the shanks of these members being of suliicient length to permit of free movement of the clip plates 1 contrariwise the band 3 and about the pivot member 7, when it is desired to detach the clip from the band, or a reversed action when it is desired to attach a clip to the band.
When required to remove the band 3 for purpose of relining, the mechanism for their tightening (not shown) is released from the slots 6 and the clips swung contrariwise about the pivot members 13, as shown by the directional arrows in Figure 2, thereby releasing the members 12 and 14 from the openings 8 and 9 thereof and causing the transverse slots 2 to register with the head 16 of the pivot member 13, thus freeing the clips and permitting their removal from the band.
Having thus described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a brake-band provided with a plurality of equally spaced and aligned retaining members bearing T-shaped heads, of demount'able clips bearing, res pectively, an elongated transverse opening having upon either side equally spaced open slots extending from the longitudinal centiers of the clips to their outer edges and oppositely disposed relative to each other, the said retaining member heads being so positioned as to be nonregisterable With said slots when said. clips are positioned properly upon the band, and to register therewith when said clips are turned at right angles to said -band.
In testimony whereof I have ailixed my RICHMOND "W. McCLELLAND.
