FLUE BASE AND HANGER.

Be it known that I, IVILLIS D. SEPARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durham, in the county of Durham and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F lue Bases and Hangers; and I do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The principal object of the present 1n vention is the provision of a support for a brick chimney which admits of the smoke pipe from a heating or cook stove being readily coupled to or disconnected from the chimney as required, said support forming a base for the chimney and admitting` of the smoke pipe being readily coupled to or disconnected from the base.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

IVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood l that in adapting the Asame to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing` from the nature of the invention.

The device comprises a plate l which is preferably elongated so that opposite end portions may engage and rest upon adjacent rafters or beams. The plate 1 is provided is a top plan view of the sup- Serial No. 651,515.

at opposite longitudinal edges with upstanding flanges 2 and with transverse flanges or ribs 3 a short distance from the extremities. These flanges or ribs provide reinforcing means and retainers for the chimney which is erected upon theupper side of the plate l and in the space circumscribed by the flanges or ribs 2 and 3. An opening 4 is provided centrally of the plate l and a collar 5 depends from the plate l in line with the opening 4L and is adapted to have the smoke pipe coupled thereto. A rim 6 depends from the plate l and the collar 5 is disposed centrally thereof. An air space 7 is formed between the collar 5 and rim 6 and operates to prevent transmission of heat from the smoke pipe to the rim 6 to such a degree as to endanger adjacent woodwork. The space 7 may be closed by a suitable cover S which may constitute an ornamental finish.

The device is usually set in an opening formed in the ceiling adjacent the roof and the chimney 9, indicated by dotted lines in Figures l and 2, is erected thereon and eX- tends through the roof. In this manner, the smoke pipe 10 may be readily coupled to or disconnected from the collar 5, thereby obviating the necessity for extending the chim.- ney through the room or building.

In the modification shown in Figure 5 the plate l has a collar ll upon its top side in line with the opening 4t. This collar l1 may be of any outline, square or round, and is designed to receive the lower end of a tile in the event of the same being used to build the chimney around.

I Vhat is claimed is:

A flue base and hanger comprising an elongated plate having aV central opening, longitudinal ribs located at the side edges of and extending throughout the entire length of the plate, transverse ribs spaced inwardly from the ends of the plate and connected to the longitudinal ribs, a collar depending from the bottom side of the plate about the opening therein, and a polygonal rim depending from the bottom side of the plate in substantially vertical alinement with the ribs.
