RUSSELL RI-IOIZES, OF ATTLEBOBO FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MASON BOX 00., OF ATTLEBOB-O FALLS, .MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed December 24:, 1924. Serial No. 757,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL I. Rrrom-xs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Attleboro Falls, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in display devices, such as trays, cards, and the like, and aims to provide means of a very economical nature which can be readily attached to a display card or the back wall of a display box, which will fold down against said card or wall so as to occupy a minimum amount of space in packing for shipment, and which can be readily swung into position to support the card or tray in inclined position for display purposes, and one in which so positioned, displacement of the supports will be impossible and the article firmly braced.
W'ith these and other objects in view, the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a display tray (unlined) with my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with the supporting members or wings in folded position, and
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2, while Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the connecting clip.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates a box or tray intended for holding articles which it is desired to display for sale, which box or tray may be of the ordinary or any clesired construction, and may be provided with the customary cover (not shown).
The articles to be displayed may be held in the tray in any desired manner, as for instance by an article bearing card, but as this forms no part of the present invention, illustration and description thereof is deemed unnecessary herein.
The box is preferably made of cardboard 'or like puncturable material, or the back thereof is, at least. 2, 2 designates wings or members of approximately triangular shape, also of cardboard, or similar material, which are foldably secured to the back of the tray near the opposite side edges thereof, so as to be folded towards each other and lie flat against the bottom of the box for shipment, or to be swung outward into planes perpendicular thereto for supporting the tray in inclined position.
For securing these wing members to the back of the box I provide sheet metal plates 3, 8 of relatively stiff but bendable metal, having pointed prongs 3 struck from the body thereof and bent at right angles thereto, which prongs may be forced through the material of the box back and wings, and clenched over to afford a secure attachment. Preferably, the sheet metal at the line of junction between the box back and wing member, is weakened to form a foldin or hinge line, which may be accomplished by providing an elongated opening 3 After the sheet metal members are secured in place, they are preferably covered by a covering of paper l: colored to correspond to the tray and wings, which may be pasted thereon, and which conceals them entirely from view.
Obviously the supporting members may be applied to a display card instead of a tray, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The box or tray may be lined or provided with a paper bottom covering concealing the clips 3 Fig. 1, when this is desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A display tray or the like, comprising a body member having a wall of relatively stiff penetrable material, angular wing members for supporting said tray in inclined position, and metal non-resilient plates of bendable metal having integral attaching prongs which respectively engage said wall and said wing members, whereby said wing members may be folded fiat against said wall for shipment, or swung outward at right angles thereto and retained in supporting position.
2. A display tray or the like, comprising a body member having a wall of relatively stiff penetrable material, angular wing members for supporting said tray in inclined position, and metal non-resilient plates of bendable metal having integral attaching prongs which respectively engage said wall and said wing members, whereby said wing members may be folded fiat against said wall for shipment, or swung outward at right angles thereto and retained in supporting position, said metal plates having weakened portions at the line of junction of the wing edges and wall.
3. A display tray or the like comprising a body member having a wall of relatively stifl' penetrable material angular wing members for supporting said tray in inclined position, and metal iiomreuilient plates of bendable metal having integral attaching prongs which respectively engage said wall and said wing members whereby said wing members may be folded flat against said wall for shipment, or swung outward at right angles thereto and retained in supporting position, and a covering 01. appearance similar to said wall and wings overlying said metal plates and concealing them from View.
l. In a display device, the combination with a cardboard wall, of a substantially triangular supporting member having an edge juxtaposed to said wall, and a hinge member of non-resilient bendable metal having portions provided with integral projections which penetrate said Wing and said wall respectively, and are elenehed thereon.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
