VIRGIL F. BOZEMAN AND CHRIS E. JOHNSON, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO DEERE @c COMPANY, OF MOLIITE, ILLNOS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS. v
WAGON STAKE.
Application filed September To all whom 'it may concern.'
iBe it known that Viren. F. BoZnMAN and @mus lil. .loi-rNsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have in` vented certain new and useful Improvements in lagon Stakes, of which the fol-v lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to wagon stakes and has for its object the production of a stake readily attachable to a bolster or detachable therefrom, which can be shipped separate from a bolster or stored in quantities to be drawn upon as needed.
It has been a common practice to mount stakes on bolsters at the time the latter are finished and to ship or store bolsterswith the stakes attached. lhen so combined the result is an awkward package requiring con siderable more space for either storage or shipping than is necessary to store or ship the bolsters and stakes separately.
Referring to the drawings in which' similar numerals indicate identical parts.
Figure 1 shows part of a bolster with our improved stake mounted thereon. Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a section on the line 37-3 of Figure 1, and Figure 4; is a detail section on the line 4-1 of Figure 1.
An end of a bolster 1 is preferably rounded and at its upper part is secured a metallic hand 2. The stake comprises a holder 3 and the stake body 4; which may be of either wood or metal, preferably the former. The holder 8 is made of sheet metal bent to form a rectangular body, open at one side, and provided at its lower end on opposite sides with flanges 5 extending` outwardly toward the sides of the bolster 1. The base of the holder consists of a plate (i adapted to rest upon the bolster 1 and bent up and over the (langes 5, :,i-ltl'iougl'i the base can consist of the `flanges only.
In the sides 7 and S respectively of the holder are opposite horizontal slots 9 through which extends, transversely of `the holder, a block 10 having a central orifice iu which is inserted a bolt 11. The bolt 11 extends downwardly through a suitable opening in the plate (i and the bolster 1 and is threaded at its lower end to receive a. nut 12. The diameter of the bolt 11 is substantially the width between the sides 7 and 8 5, 1922. Serial No. 586,352.
and the head 13 thereof is T-shaped as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. Vlt will 3e noted that the location of the bolt 11, with respectto the holder, is between the perpendicular center thereof and the side against which the wagon body contacts and the outward thrust of a load exerts its greatest force; by so locating the bolt 11 a greater resistance is offered t0 an outward pressure and the longevity of the parts is materially increased.
For storage or shipping the the holder isassembled as described with the nut 12 in place on the bolt 11. As the bolsters are all drilled, in finish, the holder can be readily mounted on the bolster by removing the nut 12 and inserting the bolt through the hole .in the bolster and resting` the base of the holder on the bolster, the nut 12 is then replaced on the bolt 11 and turned until the holder hasbeen drawn into ri gid position on the bolster, the block 10 acting as a olamping member to secure the holder in rigid Contact with the bolster. Possibility of rotation of the holder is prevented by a pointedlug.;- 14, preferably integral with the plate 6, which is forced into the bolster 1 by operation of the nut 12 to secure the holder in position.
The stake bodies 4 may be of any desired length and are readily inserted in the holders and held in position by the sides of the holders and by suitable bolts 15 on the open sides thereof. The stake bodies are stored or shipped in packages in the quantity desired. It is evident that we have produced a stake holder of great strength and durability which can be readily attached or detached and shipped or stored as a complete unit.
W'hat we claim is;
1. The combination with. a wagon bolster, of a stake holder, a. clamping member eX- tending transversely of the holder, a bolt extending' centrally through said member and the bolster and cooperating with said member to secure the holder on the bolster, and means to secure the holder from rotary movement.
2. The combination with a wagon bolster, of a stake anda holder therefor having' a base extending` transversely of the bols-ter and beyond opposite sides of the holder, said holder having a slot in each of the opposite sides thereof, a clamping member extending transversely of the holder and through said slots, and a bolt extending centrally through said member and through the base and bolster and cooperating with said member to secure the holder rigidly on the bolster.
3. The combination with a Wagon bolster, of a stake and a holder therefor having a base extending from opposite sides thereof, a clamping member connected to said holder above the base, and a bolt extending eentrally through said member and through the base and bolster and Cooperating with Said member to secure the holder rigidly on the bolster, and positioned between the perpendicular center of the holder land the Wagon body side thereof.
4. The combination with a Wagon bolster, of a stake and a holder therefor having a base extending transversely of the bolster and beyond opposite sides of the holder, said holder having a slot in each of the opposite sides thereof, a clamping member extending transversely of the holder and through the slots, and a bolt. extending through said member and the base and the bolster and operating to secure the holder in place, said bolt positioned between the perpendicular center of the holder and the Wagon body side thereof.
