enable the rem'en or others to get them into use quicker than when having to wait their coming from the stations, as in the present mode, and it consist of a box sunk in the sidewalk near the curb-stone, ush with the surface, and having a roughened cover or lid,

These boxes will, for convenience, be located near by the hydrants, and, if necessary, may be in equal or greater i numbers than the hydrants.
Figure l is a transverse sectional elevation of a portion of a roadway and sidewalk, also a storage-box of my contrivance, showing the plan by which I propose to arrange it, the section being' taken on the line w cc of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is partly a plan view and partly a horizontal section of the box.

A represents a box, which may be of wood, metal, or other substance, or combination of substances, with a cover, B, having a roughened top, C, said box being of suitable length for receiving a folding and extension re or scaling ladder, D, and of suitable vertical and transverse dimensions to contain, besides the ladder, tire-axes E, and pikes F, also such oth er articles as desired, the pikes and axes to be slung in hooks or brackets on the sides, as shown. G represents the sidewalk; H,.the curb-stone, and I the road-bed. The box is sunk in the bed of the sidewalk flush with the surface, or thereabout, as shown, to be out of the way, so as not to obstruct the legitimate use of it, and at the same time hold the ar` ticles where they can be at once taken out upon the sidewalk or roadway. f
If preferred, the box may be sunk in the roadway instead of the sidewalk; but it is believed that it will be best in the latter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Storage-boxes for containing tiremens implements, as herein described, located in convenient positions throughout the fire-districts,
