HAT-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMar. 7, .1916.
Application filed September 26, 1514. Serial No. 863,684.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Eennnr G. \VHRITE- vNoun, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Canaan, in the county of Fair field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in hat boxes and has for its primary object to provide a hat box which may be formed of metal and constructed in such manner that a hat may be placed therein or removed without disturbing any box or other article which may be positioned upon the hat box.
The invention has for a further object to provide a hat box of this character which will be constructed of the minimum number of parts of simple construction, and which will include a sliding arcuate door which, when in closed position, forms part of the body of the hat box, but may be readily unlocked and moved around the remainder of the body of the hat box for the purpose of placing a hat or moth ball holding trays in the hat box or removing the contents of the hat box.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings. in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a hat box constructed in accordance with my invention, with the door of the hat box shown in open position, Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section of the hat box, with the door in closed position, Fig. 3 is a re duced top plan view of the hat box. Fig. 4: is a detail sectional view on the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail vert cal section through the upper portion of the hat box, with the door in open position, and Fig. 6 is a similar view through the lower portion of the hat box with the door in open position.
v Referring indetail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the bottom of the boxwhich has its circular edge 2 turned downwardly for removable engagement in the channel 3 formed by extending upwardly and inwardly the lower portion of the side 1 forming the stationary portion of the body of the box. The lower edge of the body of the box is then extended downwardly and rolled, as shown at 5. The body of the box also has an inwardly oifset portion 6 adjacent its upper end with the upper edge of the inwardly offset portion 6 extended downwardly and then upwardly to form a channel 7 within which the lower circular edge 8 of the removable top 9 is engaged, said top 9 having a suitable ring 10 secured in its central portion, as shown at 11, whereby said top 9 may be removed or placed in position, as desired. The upper portion of the body of the box, after forming the channel 7, is extended upwardly and rolled outwardly, as shown at 12.
It will be understood that the box is preferably of circular form in plan view and about one-half of the body of the box is cut away and a door 13 substituted for the same, said door 13 being of arcuate or curved form in plan or cross section and having its lower and upper edges 14 and 15 respectively rolled and engaged in the rolled lower edge 5 and upper edge 12 of the body respectively, whereby the door 13 may freely and readily slide in one direction around the stationary portion of the body 4 to move the door to either opened or closed position. The door 13 is limited in its movement in one direction, however, by the outwardly rolled vertical edge 16 of said door coming in contact with the outwardly rolled vertical edge 17 of the stationary portion of the body 4. when the door 13 is in closed position. The door 13 may be readil locked in closed position by means of the latch member 18 proiecting at a right angle from the inner end of the shank 19 and having a bent end 20 for engagement through the slot 21 formed in the side of the rolled vertical edge 17 of said stationary portion of the body 4. the shank 19 being rotatably mounted through the outwardly rolled vertical edge 16 of the door 13 and having a lu ch or ring 22 formed upon its outer end. When the door is opened. a hat or other article may be placed in the box without dis turbing any other box or other article resting upon the hat box or the contents of the hat box may be removed and by referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that I have provided a suitable hat support 23 upon the center of the bottom 1. I have also provided a tray 24 of substantially semi-circular form in plan and adapted to rest in the body of the box around the edgethereof and to contain moth balls 25 or the like.
\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
What is claimed is A box comprising a body substantially semi-circular in form, the upper and lower edges of said body being rolled outwardly and inwardly forming circular recesses, the

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
