Application filed August 16, 1924. Serial No. 732,555. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUEL C. LIVINGSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Wheeler and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Cover Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to fastening means for covers such as the head of a barrel, and provides an article of this nature whereby the cover may be easily placed in position or removed as required and which may be securely held and locked in place and prevented from becoming detached and resulting in the loss of the contents of a barrel.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood. I
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions .and requirements, various 7 changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the" nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the up or portion of a barrel provided with a cover old in place by fastening means embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view of the cover as seen from the lower side, and
Figure 4 is a detail view showing the outer ends of the pivoted lock in dropped position so as to clear the locking ring adjacent the open end of the barrel.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters. I
The numeral 1 denotes a barrel which in accordance with the present invention is provided with its open end with a locking ring 2. The cover 3 is provided upon its outer side with a cleat 4 and the fastening is applied to the inner or lower side of the cover and comprises pivoted locks 5 which are free at their outer ends and adapted to engage under .the locking ring 2 and securely'hold the cover when properly applied to close the open end of the barrel. A support 6 is attached to the inner or lower side of the cover 3 and the locks 5 "are pivoted thereto and are oppositely disposed so as to engage the locking ring 2 at diametrically opposite points. In the preferable construction the support 6 consists of a metal strap or bar to the ends of which the locks 5 are pivoted or hinged in any preferred way. -Bolts 7 passing through openings in opposite edge portions of tht cover 3 engage slots 8 in the outer ends of the locks 5, the heads of the bolts engaging the under side of the locks 5 and serving to hold the latter in locked position when the nuts 9 applied to the outer threaded ends of the bolts 7 are tight-- ened, so as to grip the locking ring 2 between the lock elements 5 and the cover 3.
When the nuts 9 are loosened or backed the outer ends of the pivoted locks 5 drop and assume a position to clear the locking ring 2 so that the cover may be placed in position or removed from the barrel as re.- quired. WVhen the barrel is closed the cover 3 rests upon the locking ring 2 and the outer ends of the pivoted locks 5 are drawn up- 8 ward and engage the under side of the locking ring 2 whereby to clamp the latter and secure the cover against possible displacement.
What is claimed is V 1. Cover fastening means comprising ope positely disposed locks pivoted at their inner ends to the cover, and means engaging thecover and the said locks to draw the-- outer ends of the latter toward the coVer and secure the latter in closed position.
I 2. Cover fastening means comprising oppositely disposed locks pivoted at their inner ends to the cover and having longitudinal slots in their outer ends and bolts passing through the cover and engaging the slots in the pivoted locks whereby to draw the outer ends of the latter toward the cover and secure the latter in closed position.
3. Fastening means for a'cover, the same comprising a support secured to the middle portion of the cover, locks pivoted to the outer ends of the support and having slots in their outer portions, and bolts passing through the cover and engaging the slotted ends of the locks.
4. A barrel providedwith an inner looking ring adjacent its open end, a cover, a locks whereby'to draw the outer ends of the bar secured to the lower side of the cover, latter against the under side of the locking locks pivoted to opposite ends of the bar ring whereby to secure the cover when in 10 and provided with nuts and adapted to have closed position.
5 their outer ends engaged under the said In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
locking ring, and bolts passing through the cover and engaging the slots of the pivoted RUEL C. LIVINGSTON.
