To enable the machine to be placed within the casing, the front wall of the body part l0 is provided with an opening bordered by end sections 32 of the front wall, and through which the keyboard section of the machine projects. A removable front plate 33 is provided, to close all of the front opening except that occupied by the machine, and may be fastened to the casing by slidable linger-pieces 34 having hooks 35 to engage studs 36 on the framework 25 of the body part; all as shown in my aforesaid copending application.
To locate the machinewithin the casing, abutments 40 are provided, which may engage the rear corner-posts 4l of the typewriting machine, said abutments being secured to the casing. After the machine is located, the front plate 33 may be assembled on the casing, said front plate being provided with abutments 42 oppositely disposed to the abutments 40 on the body part of the casing and engaging the front posts 43 of the machine (Figure 2), to clamp said machine in position within the casing. g
The body part lO of the casing has side walls 45, above which are overhanging lateral extensions 46 which, with the body part and cover, from an elongated chamber in which the carriage may travel to its extreme end positions. Depending from and at the rear of the carriage chamber are pockets 48 to provide clearance for the work-sheet 49, which hangs down at the back of the machine.
To assist in raising the cover l1, as disclosed in my aforesaid co-pending application, there may be provided counterbal ance springs 50 connected to brackets 5l on the reinforcing frame 25 at the outer ends of the lateral extensions 46, said springs being connected through a linkage to the cover l1. Y The linkage may comprise a lever 52 pivoted on a bracket TS'also on the frame 25, said lever being connected by a link 53 to a bracket 54 secured to the reinforcing frame 26 of the cover'.
More effectively to deaden the sound, the casing is provided with a felt lining formed in several parts, so that it may readily be assembled within the casing; The lining of the body part is composed of arear or main section 60, which has two outward extensions 6l, the bottom edges of the extensions 6l resting on the floors of the lateral extensions 46 of the carriage chamber and of the work-sheet pockets 48. The sides of the lower body part of the casing are provided with vertical pieces 62 having hori- `thereby held in position.
zontally-disposed portions 63 for the floors of the extensions 46, which may be cut, as indicated at 64, at the corners 65 thereof, for better shaping of the corners, and which may be reinforced by pins 66 to stiften the corners.
The side pieces of felt 62 are held in place at their rear ends by the rear piece 60-61 which abuts the same; the horizontal portions 63 being held in place at their outer ends by strips of felt 67 disposed under the ledges 68 upon which the cover rests. The strips 67 overlie the horizontal portions 63 and by being downwardly pressed there againstY securely hold the` portions 67 inV position. The horizontal portions 63 rest at their forward edges aga-inst the framework of the front of the easing and may be secured thereto by screws 7l. The vertical side pieces 62 likewise at their forward edges engage the front of the' casing; and are there held flat against the casing side walls 45 by pieces 69 which line. the front casing wall at each side of the removable front plate 33. The side pieces 62 have their lower edges on the angle bars of the sides of the base of the frame, and are there secured to the latter by screws 70.
As indicated at the left hand of Figure l and right hand of Figure 2, the pieces of felt 69 at the front of the casing are relatively narrow rectangular pieces extending from the lower front angle iron of the frame, upward along the front face of the casing between the vertical side pieces 62 andbars or frame pieces 84, which define the sides of the opening in the front of the casing, to a horizontal bar 83 which delines the lower line of the lateral overhang 46. rllhese pieces 69'are pressed against the front wall under the bars 83, and between the vertical side pieces 62 and bars 84 and are No screws or other means will ordinarily be required to secure the pieces 69.
The rear piece of felt 60 may be held against the back wall by the rear ends of the horizontal portions 63 and by rightangle lining pieces 72, which are set into the smaller pockets 48, and which abut the rear piece 60. The piece 60 may be further held at its upper and lower edges by screws 73 and 7 4, respectively.
The right-angle pieces 72 in the Vpockets 48 are shown in detail in Figure 5. It will be noted that, to obtain a better setting of these angle pieces in the pockets, they are cut away attheir corners 73a. To secure these pieces in place, pins 74a may be pushed horizontally through their vertical portions and into the horizontal parts 63 of the side felt members; and pins 75 may be pushed vertically downward through the horizontal portions of the angle pieces 72 into the ver# tical parts 62 of the side pieces. Suitable springs 108, disposed beneath the cushion and seated in holes 109 in an extension or offset 110 on the front plate of the body part of the casing, serve to hold the cushion against its (zo-operating slot-closing bar 102 throughout its length, except where the cushion bends around the levers, thus closing the slot to prevent leakage of sound from within the casing.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
1. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, having a body-part and a cover therefor, both having a sound-deadening lining, said cover comprising a window and a frame therefor, forming at its upper edge a downward offset in said cover, the cover-lining comprising a roof-strip secured at its rear to the cover and having its forward edge held in the corner formed by the offset of the window-frame and the cover.
2. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, having a body-part and a cover therefor, both having a sound-deadening lining, said cover comprising a window and a frame therefor, forming at its upper edge a downward offset in said cover, the cover-lining comprising a roof-strip secured at its rear to the cover having its forward edge held in the corner formed by the offset of the window-frame and the cover, said roof-strip having forward extensions on each side of the window-frame, and means for securing said extensions at their forward ends.
3. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body-part and a cover therefor, both having a sounddeadening lining, a shield of smooth material fixed to the inner face of the sounddeadening lining at the rear wall of the cover, and a shield overlapped by said firstmentioned shield, fixed to the sound-deadening lining at the rear of the body-portion of the casing to prevent contact of a work-sheet with said lining during the typing operation.

A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body part shaped to the outlines of the base of the machine and having lateral over-hanging extensions in which the typewriter-carriage `may have its throw; a cover for the casing` Yhaving side walls and a roof which extends upward and forward; a sound-deadening lining for the casing comprising a piece for the rear of the cover, a piece for the rear of the body part, and pieces of smooth Inaterial to prevent contact of work-sheets with said lining pieces; one of said smooth pieces being attached to the cover rear-lining piece and the other to the body part' rear-lining piece, the upper of said smooth pieces overlapping the lower when the cover is closed to prevent catching of the work-sheets between the two.
5. A sound-deadening casing for aY t pewriting machine having a carriage an an operating handle projecting therefrom, said casing having a slot through which said handle projects and along which ittravels and comprising a fiexible lip supported at one side of said slot for closing the same at each side of said handle, and springs at short intervals supporting said lip in slotclosing position and permitting displacement of the lip by the handle to be local.
6. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine having a carriage and an operating handle projecting forwardly therefrom, said casing having at its front a slot through which said handle projects and along which it travels and comprising a tube of flexible material supported at one side of said slot for closing the same at each side of said handle, a helical spring inside said tube to hold it in the desired position in expanded and resistently flexible condition, and springs at short intervals supporting said tube in slot-closing position except at the point of projection of the handle.

A sound-deadening casing for typewriting machines, slotted longitudinally at the front for passage vtherethrough and movement therealong of an operating handle attached to the carriage of the machine within the casing, and comprising a cushion closing said slot except where the handle projects therethrough, said cushion com'- prising a fold of yieldable materialY and means within said fold to hold the cushion in vexpanded condition while permitting bending thereof, and springs set against the cushion at intervals therealong to hold the same yieldable in slot-closing position and to localize the bending of said cushion by said handle. A sound-deadening casing for typewriting machines, slotted longitudinally at the front for Apassage V therethrough and movement therealongof an operating handle attached to the carriage of the machine within the casing, and comprising a cushion closing said slot except where the handle projects therethrough, said cushion comprising a fold of yieldable material and a spring within said fold to hold the cushion in expanded and resistently flexible condition in desired position, means for clamping the edges of the fold in vertical position, a rail on which the neck of the fold rests with the cushion part suspended be- 7ond the face of the rail to swing thereon as a pivot, and yieldahle devices at intervals supporting the cushion p-art in Slotelosing position except at the point me projection of the handle.
9. A sound-deadening casing for a typewriting machine, comprising a body-part, a cover hinged to the body-part at the rea-r, each of said parts having a lining of sounddeadening material on which the leading edge of a work-sheet delivered from the machine may Catch, and a guide of smooth material in said oover'fixed to the inner face of the sound-deadening lining thereof and conforming in shape to said lining to deflect the leading edge of said work-sheet and to prevent engagement of said leading edge with the cover-lining during typing operation, said guide extending below the hinged Connection between said parts to prevent engagement of the leading edge of the work-sheet with the body-part lining during the typing operation.
