UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN 'WALDHEIM, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, AS SIGNOR TO UNDERWOOD TYPE- WRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
TYPEWRI'IING MACHINE.
Applieation'filed June 11, 1921. Serial No. 476,765.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WVALDHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to sound-deadening .10 cases or hoods for typewriting machines,
and is of the same general type as that disclosed in the application of B. C. 'Stickney, Serial No. 429,617, filed December 10, 1920.
It has been proposed to make the hoods of various sections so that they may be dis assembled and packed for shipment, the sections being secured to one another by screws.
an object of the present invention is to so construct the hood that it may be set up by any layman without difliculty. To this end the hood is composed of several sections which swing about one another so that the hood may be collapsed or folded;
or set up; the various parts when swung assuming their proper posit-ions. F or this purpose, the casing comprises two main parts, viz., a body part, and a cover part l'iinged to said body part, said body part having a removable front wall to permit insertion of the machine,andcomprising a rear member and side members hinged to said rear member. Thus, when the front plate is removed, the casing may be folded to occupy a small space without disassembling the body part from the cover part. For this purpose the side members may be folded against the rear member and the latter swung upwardly about the hinge which connects the cover part to the body part. The rear member, together with the side members which are attached thereto, may be swung into the cover part. The entire hood, therefore, for purposes of shipping, occupies substantially the same space as the cover part alone. Locking means may be provided to lock the side members against movement when the casing is set up, and, for this purpose, spring catches may be mounted on the side members to engage the rear member when the side members are swung outwardly to effective positions.
Thespring catches may be released when it is desired to swing the side members inwardly against the rear member.
member, said side members being fixed in outward or effective positions by the spring catches heretofore mentioned, and by attaching the front plate to the front of the side members. 7
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the casing or hood applied to an Underwood standard typewriting machine. 1
Figure 2 is a plan view of the hood, the cover part having been removed. 7
Figure 3 is an end view of the casing in its folded position.
Figure 4: is a fragmentary front view, in section, showing the relation of the side walls of the body part and the cover part.
The Underwood standard typewriting machine comprises a main frame resting upon a base 11 by means of feet 12 attached to said frame, said main frame having a forward extension 18, in which are positioned banks of keys 14 for operating typebars, not shown, to cause types carried by said type-bars to print against a platen 17. Said platen is journaled in end walls 18 of a platen-fran'ie 19, forming part of a carriage 20 mounted for letter-feeding movement on a front rail, not shown, and a rear rail 21011 the main frame. The carriage is provided with forwardly and downwardly-extending operating levers, such as the line-space lever 22, carriage-return lever 23, and carriage-release lever 24.
For deadening the sounds arising inthe typing operation, there is provided a sounddeadeni'ng casing or hood comprising a bod part and a cover part 31 connected to the body part at the rear by a hinge 32 formed by co-operating knuckles 27 and 28 on the body part and cover part, respectively, and. a pivot-rod or bolt 29 passing through said knuckles. The body part comprises a rear member 33, having side extensions or pock ets 34 for accommodating the work-sheets which hang from the rear of the carriage, side members provided with extensions 36 over which the carriage operates to the Til aid;
provided with an opening large enough to permit the forward extension 13 of the main frame to project therethrough. The machine is thus enclosed at the rear, front and sides, and, to enclose the machine at the top, there is provided the cover part 31 having a rear wall 81*, a ceiling 43 extending forwardly and downwardly and terminating in a front wall 44- above the front plate 38, said ceiling e3 being provided with a transparent plate 45 to permit typewriting at the interior of the casing to be viewed when the cover is in lowered position. A longitudinal slot is formed at the front between the front wall 44 and front plate 38, through which project the operating levers 22, and 24, so that the ordinary typing operations may be carried on without removing the cover. For closing all of the slot not actually oc cupied by these levers, there are provided co-operating cushions and 51 in the form of loops ofsound-deadening material, such as plush, felt, or soft leather, the two-ply margins of said loops being clamped between bars 52 to form units, which are mounted on the front wall ll and the front plate 38, so that the folds contact. The passage or operation of the levers distorts the cushions, which, however, are sulliciently resilient to return to their initial positions as soon as the distorting force is removed.
hen the casing is to be packed for shipping, it is first removed from the machine by withdrawing bolts 40 from lugs ell and 1-2 to permit the front plate 38 to be detached, so that the typewriting machine may be removed from the casing. The side members of the body part may then be folded inwardly to ineffective positions against the rear member by swinging each side member upon a hinge formed by a bolt 5 f passing through eo-operating lugs or knuckles 56 and 57 on the side members and rear member, respectively. The side members will then assume the position shown by the dot-and-dash line in Figure 2. The rear member may then be swun upwardly about hinge to the interior of the cover part, as shown in Figure The extreme side walls of the rear member of the body part, wnieh the side pieces or walls 70 at the outer ends of pockets 3% are positioned to telescope within the side walls 71 of the cover part, so that said body part may swing within the cover part (see Figure 4:). To support the side walls 71 of the cover part, there are provided ledges 72 on the extensions 36 which extend outwardly beyond the side pieces '70. The ledges 72 do not interfere with the upward movement of the body part into the cover part, since the side members are first swung inwardly against the rear member, the extensions 36 and ledges 72 being thus moved out of the way of side walls 71. Strips of felt 73 may be applied to the ledges 72 as is usual in this type of hood to prevent noise being made when closing the hood by the cover.
To set up the lasing, it is only necessary to swing the body part downwardly about hinge 32, and swing side members 35 out-- wardly about hinges 53 until the rear edges of the side members strike against the rear membe The side members are then in their outward or effective positions, and are each held in such position by a catch mounted on the side member and having a cam-surface (it which rides upon a ledge or projection on the rear member, during the outward movement of the side pieces, until the nose 63 of the catch has. passed the projection and is snapped into engagement therewith by a spring 64lfixed to the side member and pressing against the catch. When the nose f ntch 60 has engaged the projection 62, inward movement of the side member is in'ipossible. The catch may be released by moving it against the action of spring Gal until the nose ($3 dis-engages projection 62, the catch being moved by means of a finger-piece The casing is positioned on the base 11, said body part having inwardly-turned flan es 76 to aid in supporting the casing, and the typewriting machine is then inserted from the front and positioned within the body part by abutments 77 fixed to the rear member. The front plate 38, which is shorter than the distance between the side walls 71' of the cover (Figure 2), is then applied and bolts l0 inserted in (to-operating lugs -l-l and 4-2 to hold the front plate in position, abutments 78 carried by the front plate cooperating with abutmcnts 77 to hold the machine against movement within the casing. A work-sheet may then be inserted in the machine, the corer of the casing lowered, and the typing operation carried on in the usual manner.
Thus it will be understood that the various sections eomposi the hood are dis placeable by swinging them so that the hood may be collapsed or folded for shipmentand also readily set up for use. The collapsible hood may be lined with any suitable sounddeadening material.
ariations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
